No Golf TDI - Honda Civic Hybrid, VW GTI...?

I am so sad. I think I may have been scared away form the Golf TDI. The CEL thread is giving me a GREAT BIG PAUSE!!!. My 1995 E320 has a CEL issue right now. I don’t want to buy a new car that is going to have to go back to the dealer over and over again. Just think what those stupid sensors might do when the car gets old. I was going to avoid the DSG issues with a manual transmission, but 2 different exhaust sensors that are messed up may be a deal breaker for me.

The really sad thing is that it is probably a magnificent car, but the emission standards and stupid sensors are going to make it a royal pain in the ____ neck. I absolutely loved the test drive, but oh my heavens, I definitely don’t want a NEW CAR with CEL ISSUES. I can’t believe this is happening to my dream of having the diesel Golf.

I could get a GTI with crap mileage or the low-end regular gasser Golf. Then again, maybe I need to start looking at loaded Honda Civic Hybrid. I am very worried and feeling down about all this now.

How many guys have issues with CEL on TDI?

Not all 10 Golfs and Jetta's are having the problem.........I think it was an early bad batch of Sensors......
I have no problems and am thrilled with my JSW

Buy an earlier TDI 99-03! Simpler, cheaper, and did I say simpler! I would not be scared away from a few bad seeds though.. I know a bunch that are problem free for many, many miles! They are VW, they are NOT without their quirks but they are great cars. The GTI (2.0t) is not so bad either but they have their issues too, cam, fuel pump, lifter,ETC. With the 2.0t a chip can get you 45+hp and 80+lb.ft. Most are claiming 29-31 mpg.

You buy a Honda, you gotta Honda! It will probably start every time but boring as hell.

9500 miles no CEL.

As for the early batches, I took delivery end of Aug on my sedan, it was the first that I could find, where most dealers had no clue on arrival dates. So I think it was just a bad batch on some of the wagons made in september-nov, and some how mine squeaked through unharmed.

2010 JSW TDI, 2000 miles and so good so far. No CEL or any other mechanical problems, just couple minor irritating non-drive train related issues.

3,949 miles no lights on the 2010 JSW DSG - just get the Golf and don't worry - CEL is an issue on a tiny minority of cars..
(240K on the '01 Golf!)

Absolutely no problems at all on my 2010 Golf TDI w/DSG. No CEL. It's a great car, I'm still in love with it after 1800 miles. Averaging between 42 and 45 in mixed driving.

Thank you,
I am feeling a little better now. I was thinking Saturday was the day to order my very own, but the CEL thing was making me nervous. It is true that car forums tend to magnify the negatives. Folks don't typically start a thread just to say how their car isn't broken.

Exactly, ksing. People don't start threads talking about how wonderful their vehicles run. only how bad they have been over x days as of late.

4000 mi. on mine with no issues or lights, except i still haven't gotten over the bluetooth screw-up with putting the 9W2 in the JSW. Got a 9W3 coming. Great car. I traded a Honda civic (06) for it. Loved the honda, but the TDI is better. Got mine friday the 13th of Nov. Lucky day.

And when they do start threads about how they haven't had any problems or how much they love their cars, they get so much flack and negative feedback that it's not worth it :( Ask me how I know.

OP, is there a possibility that a new Golf TDI will encounter a MIL or some other problem? Yes. Have the cars thus far been overall reliable? Yes.

Another "no CEL" for you here at 1800 miles. Average mpg is 35 mostly rush hour. LOL, my average speed based on the display says 28! Damn that is sad. I say go for it. This is a huge step up from my '01 Impreza and I love it.

Please keep the good news coming. I am thinking it might be safe to climb down off of the fence.

3000 miles without any issues, and love the car. Highway mileage is around 46 mpg, overall total to date 39.6 and the mileage keeps getting better as the car breaks in. I love the Bluetooth system--some have reported issues but I've had none.

We have an 09 sedan with 9K - no issues - and a 10 JSW with 4.5K - no issues either. Read the paper - Toyotas, Hondas and Subarus are no walk in the park and should no longer be considered a haven for car issues. Good luck with your decision.

ksing44, you will be extremely disappointed with a Civic Hybrid after driving a Benz E320 for years. It may be reliable but it will be boring as hell. You may fall asleep at the wheel! With the Civic, you might as well be driving a electric toaster.

My only problem with this car is that I want to drive it all the time. It is a blast, and the 6-speed manual transmission is fantastic. When I drive my Prius, I feel WAY too abstracted from the driving experience.

I'm averaging around 5.2 L/100km in mixed driving [hilly SF, hilly I-280.]

Ha! So true! Even when I only need to run to the supermarket, which is very close by, I line up other places to go to, just so I can get more driving time in the TDI :p .
