The car ran perfectly and I took out the starter without disconnecting any wires except the battery and put the starter back in and now it won't fire. 1998 Jetta ahu1z engine. The car cranks plenty fast but will not even try to start. The tachometer is not showing RPM at all and I can't get an RPM reading with VAG COM as it resets every time I crank and have to stop cranking for it to reestablish communication. The power to the single wire on the top of the diesel pump has power with the key on at all times EXCEPT while actually cranking. I can't find a diesel specific relay and fuse diagram to see what fuse or relay may relate to the 4 total wires going to the pump and I do not know what reading any of the wires are supposed to have at any given time in the starting process to test them. The battery terminals and all wires are clean and firmly connected.

Did you remember the ground wire? Check the other wires off battery terminal. What was starter replaced for? Could ignition switch me the original culprit?

The starter just had the bolts falling out that is why i did not disconnect the starter i just bolted it back in and yes the negative pole and all battery wires are clean and tight the car cranks over strong and bast just no fuel coming out of the injector lines.

I got it started but how do I fix it. I got a stick to hold down the clutch pedal and then I wired a manual starter switch directly to the starter then I turned the ignition switch to the on running position then i used a test light to verify power was running to the top single wire on the pump then hit the button and it fired right up. Again there is no power going to that top pump wire only while cranking with the key so i bypassed cranking by the ignition switch and problem fixed so do you think it is the ignition switch or a relay or fuse somewhere else.
