No Crank

I just got a call that my 2000 jetta automatic won't crank. My Mom stopped at the store, came out & the car won't crank. It has power. I'm thinking it sounds like the neutral safety switch. I don't know enough about relay 109 to know if it will cause a no crank issue. The car is about 50 miles away & I'm heading to the vw dealer to get parts.
questions.
1. will relay 109 cause a no crank condition?
2. will the dealer know what I'm asking for if I say relay 109 or do I need a part number?
3. If it's not the neutral safety switch or relay 109, what could it be?

ps. sorry I don't have time to search.:)

Relay 109 will NOT cause a no crank condition.

On the slushbox cars, you can interrogate the TCM to check the range switch, however the CCM controls the starter inhibit relay.

Start by checking all the fuses. Then the starter inhibit relay. Cannot remember that control number off the top of my head.

Try position 3, which is the top row 3rd from the left, with either a 53 or 465 control number on it. That is the interlock relay, then position 11 relay with a 175 on it is the starter relay.

Hope that helps.

My Mom was able to get the car started & it's home in the barn. She tried to start the car & it cranked after about 100 tries. Parked it & it won't crank now so I should be able find the root cause. I went to the dealer & got a relay 109 yesterday. It needs changed anyway. The parts guy talked to a tech & said it was likely the ignition switch. I'm going to get an ignition switch & the starter relay.
Can I see the ignition switch with vag com? ie will I be able to tell if the switch is making contact?

its likely the ignition swithc which is a 10$ or so part. very common, especially if your mom has a lot of keys & keychains on her keyring.

could also be the brake light switch or the interlock for the park on the automatic, have her try to get it into neutral before trying to crank it and see if it fires up.

I just went thru this a couple of weeks ago also. Root cause was the ground wire to the starter/solenoid. That connector has a rubber boot that houses the wire. In my case, the wire was broken at the connection, but that boot kept the wire in place and promoted intermittent starting. Quick check - with key in start position, gently rock the car back and forth in park. If you find a sweet spot and it starts, then check that connector. I spliced an AWG 16-14 detachable connector F(hardware store item) into the wire and that will fit real snug on the post(at least it did on mine). That'll last until you get the connector, which by the way is an OEM part ($13, the wire is $7).

I'd also propose that just getting in and out of the car, or someone leaning up against the bumber with the hood open might be enough to get contact in there. Pics of the connectors here... http://forums.tdiclub.com/showthread.php?t=221352&page=3&highlight=cwi_tdi if that helps. Good luck.

Oil hammer,

My problem sounds exactly like Windjammer's except my car never started again. I I also have reverse video on the trans display. If you had reverse video on the trans display would you skip the questions about the starter and move to Park-neutral safety, N175 or the PNS switch (yellow colored)?

Will

Forgot to post the fix. It was the ignition switch. I could get the car to start if I push in on the key while turning.
