No \"Beep\" When Locking the Car

I've apparently lost the friendly little "beep" when I lock my '02 Golf. I seem to recall someone else having this problem some time ago, but can't find the post.

Does this foretell serious problems to come or is it a simple fix? I love that soft little horn sound as much as the radio "boop" and the anti-shudder valve "thump" sound.

I know in my '00 Jetta if I do not shut the trunk all the way the horn wont sound nor will the alarm "arm" itself until I shut the trunk.

Make sure you have things like your hood, trunk, and other doors closed.

Check and make sure your radio is fully seated in its slot. Some switch somewhere on the car is preventing the alarm from arming.

I just went out to the parking lot and opened and slammed and pushed everything as suggested and, sure enough, there's the beep.
In my defense, however, the lights DID flash! So oops (and thanks).

I've had my '02 Golf TDI do the same thing once in a while. The lights flash once as usual when locking the car and arming the system, but no beep from the alarm horn. After about a 30 second wait, I'll hear the beep.

I had a 2000 Golf 2.0 gasser that did the same thing.

It only happens once in a while and I don't have an explanation for it. It appears to be a minor VW quirk but not a problem.

The lights will ALWAYS flash to acknowledge the command. the horn only beeps when everything has responded to the command correctly.

On the golf there is a bug in he alarm system where if you stop the car, unlock all the doors via the unlock butotn on the drivers / passanagers door an DON'T open / close the trunk (regardless if you've told it to unlock or not) the alarm will NOT fully activate / beep until you open / close the trunk. A little bug I've found.

To fix that I set my car so when I remove my key all doors unlock.

Check the fuse on top of the 109 relay. Use VAGCOM to check the function of the alarm horn, which is different, then the "normal" horn. Mine stopped working when I inadvertently pulled the wire out of the convince group while installing the missing alarm antenna wire from the factory.

I've also noticed that this happens with my Golf if I turn of the ignition and someone opens their door while I'm trying to adjust the power windows. (For those who never noticed, you can still adjust the power windows for a little while with the car turned off until a door is opened). But the alarm always returns to normal operation the next time I get to a destination and try to arm it.

Is this an operation that is fully explained in the TDIFAQ? or VAG-COM instructions? I'd love to make this change to my Golf.

Selective Unlocking:

[Select]
[46 - Cent. Conv.] (35 - Cent. Locking for manual window cars)
[Recode - 07]
Write down the existing coding for future reference.
Enter 5-digit code from below
[Do It!]

Look at the existing Soft. Coding. If you have selective unlocking (press the unlock button on the remote once to open the driver's door, twice to open all the doors) the last digit of your coding should be an odd number. To make all doors unlock, add 1 to the coding.

So, if you have a 2-door 2002 GTI that is coded for selective unlocking (00064) add one to make it 00065 so that all doors unlock with one press of the unlock button.

Lock/Unlock Horn/Flash:

[Select]
[46 - Cent. Conv.] (35 - Cent. Locking for manual window cars)
[Adaptation - 10]
Channel (03..08)
Adaptation Value (1 = on, 0 = off)
[Save]

Channel 03 Auto Lock
Channel 04 Auto Unlock
Channel 05 Unlock, horn sounds
Channel 06 Lock, horn sounds
Channel 07 Unlock, turn signals flash
Channel 08 Lock, turn signals flash

Channel 4 is the one that makes the doors unlock when you remove the key

When I had "No Beep", it was the famous Golf rear wiper washer leak. This caused my alarm to go off at any time (including 3am).

The washer fluid leak all down into all the electric wiring and switches of the hatch latch, alarm, and lock plunger. I had to replace with new....$180 later!

Similar as red golf. Only on our silver Golf the symptom was just the delayed beep sound, never random alarm going off. I got away with only replacing the hatch latch (about $25) - it contains a two stage microswitch that feeds the lock system (second click) and also triggers the cargo light (first click). Microswitch was beyond revival due to corrosion from washer fluid leak.
