No 4th gear working??

For the TDI experts...

The subject is my mother's 2001 Jetta 5 speed. The transmission started popping out of 5th gear. Now 5th works fine but the shifter just moves into 4th gear and the motor just revs. It seems to make no noise.

Any ideas?

I would have a good look at the shifter cables and counterweight for debries lying on top of the trans, blocking movement. Might just need adjusting, or is coming apart somehow. Probably not likely a transmission internal problem, from personal experence with these type of shifter setups. I adjust it by trial and re-trial, but there is a specific way to set these up, but if it is changing, something is problaby loose, or a cable is going south. A good look might tell the story.
