That's steep for a 20 year old car, but on the other hand this thing will likely outlast most new cars on sale today. Hopefully that timing belt has been serviced recently.

Don't let Peter see this...he may be tempted to sell his unused Mk7 and have an IBW backup for IBW! Of course, for $16k, one could buy 3 or 4 nice ALH/BEW wagons and stock up, just in case.

There was a mint 2003 GL wagon 5MT with 15K original miles in NH that sold for $9K on Autotrader back in 2018. I talked to the guy who bought it and he said it was stored indoors and was mint. I've also seen a few on CL and Autotrader pre-Covid that were sub 100K miles also in the $8K-9K price range that looked pretty nice.

$16K is nuts but it doesn't mean it won't sell for that price as I've seen crazier things happen in the last 2 years than I ever expected to see in my life. Everyday I wake up and say WhiskeyTangoFoxtrot!?!

I just noticed the lower front bumber trim is cracked and the glovebox is broken. I wonder what other surprises are in store for the lucky buyer?

For $16k it should be perfect - with all services done.

Some shady dealer just looking to turn a quick (steep) profit on a likely estate sale car.

That dealer has some more obscure cars. Like this 1998 Chevy metro with 70k miles https://www.genuinemotorco.com/vehi...ro-lsi-sedan-5487742e9474394987546a959beda79b

I mean that's a cool car but I'm not sure why anyone would pay $6900 for it. Not sure if dealer is on crack or inflation is really starting to kick in

ALH Jetta Wagon/Audi A3 = apples and oranges.

That car is tempting, but the truth is that my Wagon is still doing fine, and will for a while longer. But it's nice to see this. I would probably be willing to trade my '15 for that car.

I wonder if the original ad was incorrect or someone did the 5M swap?
I was thinking the same thing. It has the correct skinny pedal for a manual. The shift boot and pedals also look new. Maybe the 01M was slipping so it was replaced.

If someone can decipher the VIN to verify if it was an Auto to manual swap we would know for sure.

Looks like it was born a manual, transmission code EGR.
Thats crazy. Then that wagon was a hell of a deal for $5670. The internet sales team at Santa Monica VW must have their head up their a$$ if they sold that car with that mileage for less than $6K. It looks like it has every option including ESP.

I doubt that car is a manual swap, or has factory manual IP lines.

Hey, if I win Powerball, it'll be sitting in my driveway alongside that '15 GSW SEL TDI 6spd that Jim Ellis has for only in the mid-$40's.....

ick. beige interior. YUCK! Deal breaker all the way..

Now that being said. who cares about miles on these? Miles dont hold as much value when you have a diesel for obvious reasons.

My 2003 GLS 5 speed is totally modified in a proven durable and reliable way. It also has a sound system that will have you seeing God.

cost was 7K with 135K miles on it in 2015. I put another 10K into it and literally replaced any part with new as well as improved where needed/. So bigger turbo, injectors, better cam. ported head. bilstein HD's, taller 5th gear, new proper clutch and malone stage 4 tune. New bushings, brakes timing kit hoses radiator and tires with beetle turbo S wheels and 750watt custom JL 9 speaker sound system. Throw in a nice dark tint all around and I have a car that now has 210K and it has never ever let me down and is as tight as a drum and gets 45 mpg all day long. To say I adore this car is a severe understatement.

Then I did the same to a 2003 White on Black sedan GL but this one I replaced the interior with a 2005 black leather one It only has 199K miles on it. Same sound system as well..

Then I picked up a one owner CA local to San Jose holy grail to me 2003 white wagon 5 speed with black interior GLS. I have never seen one like this and bought it for 3900.00 on the spot. I would have given him even more if he had asked.. it has 276K miles on and is in 1-2 year old condition. Its going to get the same treatment as the other ones. It already has a rare black leather wagon interior installed including door panels and as a nice bonus it came already equipped with the bilsterin HD's as well as the neuspeed springs and front and rear sway bars.. thats 2000.00 right there included.

never once did I worry about miles. They simply dont hold much importance on an ALH motor. For me its the color combination thats critical because pretty much anything else can be re done easily... I have changed out an interior on a wagon and all I can say is never ever again. That beige is nauseating. for me its black or grey and never cloth. 16K is a lot of money... and that interior should look a lot better but its still beige.. yuck.

I love/ hate my beige interior. It's cooler in the summer. But appears dirtier faster. I didn't even pay 16k for my 2012. Seems a bit inflated.

No beige for me, either. Or light gray. Black or the dark gray cloth these cars had.

Ditto PeterDaniel on the general approach to mods and the stereo and beige interiors. I don’t want another though - one is enough.

I also agree with Peter that if a MKIV's cosmetics are good, mileage isn't much of an issue. My Wagon doesn't drive much, if any, different than it did 200K miles ago. Although the interior has had some hard use, it's held up remarkably well. This is where I am a firm believer that keeping the car garaged is a huge help. Other than scratched up soft touch on the door handles and some very minor flaking of black around a couple of the vents, the interior looks like it did when the car was new. Treating it to an annual professional detail helps, too.

Crazy high listing prices are great when I go to resell my old cars for thousands less. Sometimes I think dealers do these things for attention or so they can come down a few thousand, give you a crazy high price for your junk trade in and still laugh while going to the bank. I was looking for a diesel Ford Excursion and found 20 year old trucks listed for $50000 - $90000. Maybe the world is going crazy faster than I thought.

My understanding is that Excursions do get those kind of prices. Although very different from a Jetta Wagon, both are unicorns.

Yeah, diesel Excursions are rare around here, if any do popup, rust and over 200k still asking well north of $10k-$15k...

I still have my 2004 MT TDI GLS Wagon with 230K on it. Bought it for $9K with 118K on it 10 years ago. Melone Stage 1.5 tune, Collar and all the Disel Geek **** like the shifter and Panzer Plate etc, Alpine double din with Car Play. Did the belt at 210K and she's still going strong as ever...you'd have to give me at least $15K for it for me to part with 50mpg. And even then, you'd have to fight my wife for it. In CA you won't find one that's clean for less than $10K unless you get lucky with an uneducated seller. There's just nothing else out there that provides such overall utility. These things are the GOAT when it comes to efficiency. They had these in the 80s but come on 65hp and it's a, miniature tin can compared to the VW https://www.liveabout.com/50-mpg-honda-3974650
