If the TDI Tiguan is only available in FWD, there's little reason to choose it over a Rabbit IMO.
I'd be OK with a FWD Tiguan - been doing alright with a FWD Jetta for the last 9 years & don't need 4WD. The difference between that and a Rabbit? For taller folks like myself I'd prefer a vehicle that sits higher for easier ingress/egress. I'd only consider the Tig if it was available with the TDI motor and was priced competitively.

One might argue that if the vehicles that are not nearly as nice as a Tiguan are 25-30k, why should the better vehicle be lesser? Or even vehicles in the same class?
I don't disagree with you. VW will price these competively so they can make sales but also make money at the same time. I'm just wishing they would put a diesel in a stipped down car where the only option checked is the diesel one. Essentially, I'm complaining about the selection we have to choose from, not the price of the Tiguan.

So you're looking for a $14k car with no sunroof, manual windows and locks, cloth seats, etc. Plenty to choose from in europe, not so much here. Who knows, maybe if they offer the TDI in the Rabbit 2 door, it might be what you're looking for.

I think for most people, it would be more important to know if it makes at least 40 mpg hwy and if it costs 20K.

Hard to find ANY decent car under $20k these days. Heck, a 4-door Rabbit with a sunroof is over $18k.
But I don't want a sunroof. I had to buy my Jetta Wagon with a moonroof because that's all they had and the lot and they didn't know when they would get another. Thats the problem you can't find a basic car these days.

Take for example cruise control. On a lot of cars if you want cruise control, which is at the most a $25 item you have to buy a $1500 to $2500 package to get it or buy the next trim level.

You can buy quite a few nice cars for $14K to $16k though. The Yaris and Fit come to mind along with a few of the Hyundais and Kias.

Before you say a Hyundai isn't in the same league as a VW, first the rental diesel Santa Fe I had in the Czech Republic matched my VW in fit and finish. Second, for a lot of us, a car is just a tool to take us from A to B. We don't derive our identity from the car we drive. VW's plan to decontent their line-up is music to my ears. Now if they will just bring over the Polo TDI!

I want to upgrade to 8 piston calipers on my F350. The stock brakes just aren't adequate... on an F350. I'm sure they'd be fine on a little Tiguan though. ;)

It'd be nice if they offered a Tiguan Sport model with the TDI... but that ain't gonna happen.

Actually, the F350 has puny little 2-piston floating calipers. The Touareg uses huge 6-piston fixed calipers, same as the Porsche Cayenne. Not even in the same league. In fact, brake upgrades are a popular modification to the F350 crowd especially if they do heavy towing.

We'll see the Tiguan TDI first. I think you'll see a V6 Touareg TDI before you see a diesel Q7.

I wouldn't bet on that. With the success of Audi's R10 race car, the big push at Audi these days is TDI. I'd be very surprised if Audi doesn't put the Q7 3.0 TDI on sale the minute it passes EPA testing.

yeah if we are being hinest with ourselves.. i dont particularly care for them but hyundai/kia are the true "peoples car" these days. Excellent value and practical. VW is not really offering that to NA.

Yeah, I was disappointed that the first Hyundai announced to have a diesel is the Veracruz. Seems like a nice vehicle, but if they would bring over the Sonata with a diesel I would be the first one in line with money in hand. The Limited is loaded up like a pkg. 2 but for only like $22k. I couldn't be happier with my Elantra. Especially Hyundais great service website, every manufacturer should model their service site after Hyundais. Everyone that owns a Hyundai can get all the bulletins and all the service manuals just like the dealers can get just by creating an account and logging on!

Yes, the Audi and the Touareg TDI as soon as possible, and the Tiguan TDI when they get around to it.

No thank you. Just what we need: another big honking SUV.

Put it in the Santa Fe or a 4 banger diesel in the Tucsan, and you may have something.

"the Tiguan is named after a small tribe in the Philippines"

VW has a history of unique names. The Touareg is named after an African tribe. The Scirocco was named after an African wind. Maybe it's to distance itself from "der fuhrer's car".

Why?

The US market hardly needs another small SUV. IMO VW will not sell their quota of gasoline models but may sell the diesel quota if the "ugly" goes away.

Exactly. I think the market DOES need (I mean want), a fuel effecient small SUV - what better than a TDI?? People like their big machines, so I think the TDI version probably will sell...

x2, I think it'll sell. Really, its only competition is the BMW X3. All the other small SUV's on the market are chintzy, cheap, low-end stuff like Honda CRV and Ford Escape.

Those same chintzy cheap SUV's are equipped with small gutless gas engines that aren't so great on fuel economy. Add VW's high quality interiors, torquey TDI, and 40 mpg and it sounds like a winner to me. I think lots of people would consider a small sized SUV but found the market full of low-end junk.

A Honda is a "Chintzy cheap SUV"? That must be a different Honda CRV from the one we own. It is fully the equal to the Golf we own in terms of quality. "Gutless gas engine"? That must also be different from the one in the CRV we own that pulled my old Dodge 3500 off a mud bank, sideways no less. Yes, the fuel economy is nothing compared to the Golf tdi, but if Honda offered one with a diesel in the US, assuming it got decent mileage, we would buy one in a second.

as all road i prefer a land rover defender ,a car tested during this last 50 years ago ,high reliable ,and good adaptation in any enviroment, and in the last models they had bmw tdi engines (td5)
took all this experiencies was the cause that bmw to buy land rover for make their own all roads ( x3 ,x5 ),and VW dont have almost any experiencie really making this kind of vehicles .regards
