I'm a lurker here and vortex. This site seems like a great place. I've been a GM person all my life. But I've been very big on turbo's and diesel technologies. I've had a 87 Buick Grand National, 99 Buick Regal GS (supercharged), 04 GTO, 07 GMC Sierra Duramax, and a 09 Corvette Z06. But GM doesn't have a small diesel motor (they scrapped those plans a year ago).....

... so I put my Sierra up on the market to see if I can get a reasonable amount for it. A few offers are on the table for the truck and I've test driven a 2010 JSW DSG. The DSG wasn't as bad as I've read - but I'm still going for the manual. There is the perfect combo of options in a JSW coming to the dealership this week and it looks like I'll be a VW owner soon!

Looks like I'll need a copy of VAG-COM for diagnostic and possible upgrades ... I have a similar (but a little more user friendly) software for all my GM cars called HPTuners. I assume VAG-COM is pretty standard needs a windows laptop and a USB connection.

Other than that I don't plan to do too much to the car, and it seems like the best compromise of usability, acceleration, cost, and fuel mileage.

That's exactly why we are all here. Welcome to the "club". Vag-Com (VCDS) is definitely a worthwhile investment. Either you or someone convenient to you should own it (owning it yourself is best!).

Have Fun!

devil, you'll love it! I got rid of my 2007 Denali to get the TDI...the ride is fun, the handling is great and the fuel economy is awesome:D I never really thought I'd like this car as much as I do. I am typically someone who buys new cars every 1.5 - 2 years because I get bored quickly...don't believe in leasing as I typically get top dollar for my cars due to their excellent condition. I may actually keep this one 3 years:p

I came from being a corvette owner to this TDI now. Had to cut expenses so the vette had to go

I still have the vette so I'm lucky on that end. The truck sold today to a sweet retired couple that are buying a camper and traveling to Alaska and all over the place. Paperwork was signed at the VW dealer for them to try to grab the exact one I want with in the area (should be delivered early this week to that dealer). I hope I can get it, otherwise I'll have to make some compromises.

@devil:

The silver was on my short list of "acceptable" (never tell the salesman you actually WANT it [g]) colors, but as you can see I ended up a bit darker.

Hope you get what you want, er, will accept.

VCDS and new cars

I will take delivery of my 2010 TDI Golf Wagon (JSW) in a couple of weeks and have been reading a lot about VCDS. I have already bought a SGII so that I can monitor items as I drive but what I read suggests that VCDS does so much more and it might be useful - I confess I do not tinker much with cars anymore but I do like to be an informed owner.

I have a few Newbie questions that perhaps someone could answer:
a) why is a VCDS a useful tool when the car is new and under warranty?
b) Would it give information that could be saved and used as "baseline" for the future?
c) If I did buy one which model would I really need?
d) Is the Micro CAN enough?
e) How important is the Turbo mode? (seems like the main thing I would be missing but save about $100 - USB versions)

Hope someone can help.

I can only answer your first question. Because you would have nearly the same amount of information as the dealership. And between the service tech's and the service writer that information can be twisted or diluted. True if its under warranty the repairs are done for free, but time and frustration should be factored in as well.

Between having a GM Tech II and the previously mentioned software that is like VCDS - I've been able to diagnose, reset, and save my self a ton of trips to the dealership.

It is a great tool to have. I will be planning on getting one as well. I wish a lot of cars would be like the vette where you can pull up codes right on the dash and have the ability to clear them with no extra tools or scanners

Welcome to the tdiclub!

I sold my 2004 F-150 SuperCrew 5.4L V8 when I bought my VW TDI JSW 6spd manual. I'm very happy with the TDI. I went from gettting 15mpg to ~39mpg! Loving it! Plus the JSW is much more fun to drive.
I wish Ford and/or GM would build a direct injected turbo diesel 4 cylinder and or 6 cylinder...for the US market.
I'm constently reading that "the american market isn't ready for diesel..."
Well, VW is reaping the rewards for being the only non-premium name plate offering diesel to american customers.
Honda was going to bring a 2.2L diesel to market (now cancelled for US market). Subaru was going to bring a 4 cylinder diesel to market (also cancelled for US market).....WHY?

I'm really enjoying my diesel. I don't think I could ever go back to a gasser? VW, keep building those TDI's!

Well GM did have the "baby" duramax planed for the lighter duty trucks. It would fit in anything that currently has a V8 in it. They also bought a small diesel motor company from Italy I believe. Both projects have been shelved.

My truck will be gone Saturday and I will have the JSW tomorrow.

exactly. no one else is offering a diesel in a passenger car platform. why? who knows and once more, why aren't they offering a diesel hybrid?

edit: do they think that us little dumb americans can't handle it?

Thanks to dpg and devilyellow for your comments re. VCDS.

I sent almost the same message directly to ross-tech support to see what they would say and got a great explanation of their product. Real service with answers I considered fair and open - a rarity I find. I have since ordered the Micro-CAN and will have it before my car arrives. Pricey to ship to Canada but I feel it will be worth it.

Where in TO are you? My in-laws are in Woodbridge. At my past job I used to do a lot of exporting, and found for small orders USPS from the states to Canada was the best. UPS/FedEx charges brokerage fees + duties. Sometimes those fees would really add up.

I am north of the city in the Caledon area. There was only one choice via the web so I had to select it - I expect it to arrive tomorrow so I will see if other fees are added - will not be shocked since it has happened before. It is odd that using different carriers results in extra fees sometimes - makes a mockery of standard procedures! I will post what happens.

Yes, and Ford had a 4.4L diesel for the 1/2 ton trucks, Dodge had a small Cummins for their 1/2 ton trucks coming, and even Toyota had a diesel on the way which have all been stopped. Everyone I talk to with a 1/2 ton truck would love to buy their next one with a diesel. They would sell them....I don't understand why they won't build them???
