Thanks for the clarity. I've been saying this in response to those squawking about the TDI EPA figures. My '09 sedan is rated 30/39 and even when new it was returning high 30's in town and low 40's highway. You must remember that the EPA revamped the way it estimates MPGs in 2007 while new TDIs were on hiatus in North America. The sticker numbers are worse on EVERYTHING beginning in 2007. And the method penalized the diesels by a substantial margin (exact number escapes me at the moment). I think the Beetle TDI will get much better than sticker. I doubt many will see 50-mpg... but they'll do better than 38 for sure!
I would be willing to bet that 52mpg won't happen, at least here in the US at least. I say this because if VW isn't selling something with 52mpg after all their experience selling diesels in the U.S., Mazda can't. It isn't that they aren't capable, but the emissions laws in the U.S. don't foster an atmosphere of improved mpg ratings for diesels. All this talk about new Diesels -- the upcoming Mazda CX-5 AWD Diesel has caught my eye with talk of 52mpg. I guess we have to wait until next year to find out the real specs.
And they don't have to follow California emissions standardsIn a CX-5, I'd guess that's 52 mpUSg on the Euro cycle - and probably extra-urban at that (although usually it's combined figures that are quoted for that cycle).
Euro combined figures for diesels tend to be significantly higher than US highway.
And they are probably using British gallons as wellIn a CX-5, I'd guess that's 52 mpUSg on the Euro cycle - and probably extra-urban at that (although usually it's combined figures that are quoted for that cycle).

AKA Imperial gallons for those of you in ...........And they are probably using British gallons as well
