GREAT guys to work with!

Almost forgot my little plug for Terry and Mark at R Diesel, and Steve The TDI Guy in Ft. Worth. GREAT guys to deal with, and VERY knowledgeable. They ONLY buy/sell/service TDI's, so you don't have to deal with people that sell other cars and talk to you about TDI's like they know it all. These guys really do! Terry did a great job in finding one that would fit my needs, and Mark had everything ready to go when we picked it up. In and out of his office in 10 minutes (would have been five if I hadn't asked him so many questions). And Steve was willing to take the time to answer even more questions, and told me to call him directly when I had more.
They ship these cars all over the country, so you don't just have to live in N. Texas to deal with them (I actually gave my boss in MI their number to call when he gets one).
Kudos, guys! And Thanks!! And thanks to Marin in Plano (another Trusted TDI Mechanic) for recommending them to me!

Please do not give your TDI "gas" to sip -- that would be a very bad thing.
You and your better half should make a conscious effort to use "fuel" as the general term for gasoline and diesel, as in "the XXX needs fuel". When referring to your Jetta TDI, only use the terms "fuel" or "diesel". If you avoid the term "gas", then you will be less likely to misfuel either vehicle.
Also, do not loan your TDI to anyone who might feel obligated to top up the tank before returning it to you. Or at least not to anyone who is not already a TDI driver.
Good call on others driving it. I never thought of that. And yes, fuel is a much better term. Helps keep it straight in your head.

Hello TDI Club

Hi all, Stephanos here from NYC. Lost my '93 F250 (diesel) in Sandy, and been perusing the Wanted/Sale section, posting hits from a 200 mile radius that come up on my google reader (following RSS feeds for several CL pages is my area). Also been using the site to educate myself about TDI's and maintenance. What a great site and knowledgable community -- thanks to all the veterans and regulars that participate.

Shopping for a decent 1999.5 2d manual (red preferred ) in the $3,000 range (perhaps this is a giveaway that I'm a noob), willing to put in some work. Also, this evening just stumbled upon Foobert's site. It's a great resource, and maybe should be added to the first post in this thread?

The 99.5(98 bug) is the first of that generation, expand your search to 2003 (last year) and your search radius.

Not new, but back after a long hiatus. Glad to be back here again. I'm new to the MK4's so I have some reading to catch up on.

Let me see... timing belts, and manual swaps...

With the MKIV the auto are junk, they say 03 was the best year. With the MKV in time the cam and the DMF will have to replace. The 05.5 has the most options.Do some more reading here to get the full picture

Good luck:)

Not all Mk4 Volkswagen automatic transmissions were junk, only the ones offered with TDIs before 2004. So, with 2003-and-earlier models, stick with the manual transmission; but the 5-speed Tiptronic and 6-speed DSG transmissions offered in 2004 and later are okay.

New to TDI forums Just bought 2002 Jetta GLS TDI . Paid $1000 for car. Owner states vehicle just quit running. Towed to VW dealership. They said it needs a new motor. Tow driver told owner it threw a rod. I bought vehicle, towed home.
Put socket/ratchet on crank. It turned 2 complete revs. I do not know where to start. Battery down, have not tried to turn over engine. Am told to pull oil pan, check for metal shavings. Am told not pull head until other things are checked. ??
I know I should be scolded for buying w/o knowing more about car.
It is very nice int and ext. Figure at worse , install good used $2000 motor and have a good vehicle. Jetta has 131 K miles.
I currently have a 1982 Rabbit truck 1.6 L diesel and a 1982 Jetta 1.6 L diesel. Do most of my own work on these 2
TDI new to me . I will appreciate any and all info from those who are in the know and are willing to give advice.

Hello Everyone! I am new to VW and TDI's. I have always been interested in them but never got one. Sold my 2007 Nissan Titan (loved it but gas millage was kicking my rear end) and bought a 2002 Jetta TDI. The car seems in pretty good shape and I can't wait to start modding it but I have to pay bills off first. I have been reading a bit on the forum and getting smarter on the TDI but have a long ways to go. Hope to learn a bunch on here and begin getting ideas on what to do to my new baby.

Hi all. I've mostly been lurking for research purposes as I plan my new car purchase, but the decision is made and I am looking to buy (or possibly lease) a new Jetta TDI at some point this year. I am in no hurry, so I'm still looking for advice or what to be wary of.

Hello! New to the forum and new owner of a 99 TDI Jetta. It's my first VW diesel but I'm a previous owner of an '83 diesel Chevy truck and still have an '02 diesel Ford truck. I'm looking forward to many more economical miles with the TDI. I've got a lot of reading to do, but hope to be a useful contributor as well.

Hey there, I'm stubby, or Aaron whichever you prefer. Bought an 03 wagon in hopes to not only get great fuel economy but also get into alternative fuels as well. I'm intending on running black diesel for the most part due to living in mn. Also having 4 kids I'm fabing up a rumble seat for my kiddos. I'm new to diesels but have been thriving to get into them, I actually gave up my beloved jeep to get into these, and now with alternative fuels I may be buying a second one for my wife but hers will be a bug. Look forward to the forum.

Hey Nick, welcome aboard. I have an 03 Ford 6.0 - not quite as indestructible as your 7.3.

New TDI owner here. Love the site, almost as much as my Passat ;)
Another Passat owner! Very cool. Be sure to check out the Passat forum for specific model info and some great discussion. :D

Be careful on the black diesel discussion - banned subject here. That said, I hope you enjoy plenty of other conversation, tips, and tricks - lots to go around. :)

Paint protection?

New to the TDI forums. Joined for the wealth of info that I've seen posted. So, maybe I get some advice on protecting the paint on my new 2013 Jetta TDI that is red (tornado red). I've had the Jetta for a month or so and noticed some bird droppings on it. I brought it home and wash the droppings off only to find a residue/etching left over. I brought it to the dealer and asked if there was a defect in the clear coat, they said "no" and buffed it out. Looks good now. They also try to sell me a Xzilon protection system for $500. Question is what's a good or best way to protect this type of paint from being etched again? Thanks for any info.

A paint protection system would be an excellent idea. My understanding is that it's something like polyurethane for your car paint. (Not speaking of Xzilon specifically.)

Or you could wax the hell out of it. :)

I guess the paint on 2013 Jettas is questionable. I think this is the third paint post I've come across in the last two days.

Mine is really crappy. Have no idea if it rolled off the assembly line like that or the dealership tried something fishy.

Check it out in the Jetta sedan 2011 section

Noob in the house!

Hello everyone. I just joined the forum last night (after lurking for a week or so). I bought a 2012 Jetta TDI Sportwagen one year ago for my wife. We have been so impressed with the car and fuel mileage that I just traded my ride for a new Passat TDI SE. I have been driving it for one week and love it so far. Still on the first tank of gas, but the MFD is showing 41 mpg (in mixed driving). I hope to be a good contributor to the forum.

I guess I can "officially" join the club now. I'm Holley, and I just bought a 2003 Golf, 4dr, 5 speed. I LOVE THIS CAR. I'm getting over 42 miles to the gallon (mixed driving) and the car is so much fun to drive. My husband is jealous, but he's not getting my keys!

Congrats on the '03, Holley - they're considered to be one of the most sought-after TDIs among TDIClubbers.
