ajm: your 2010 TDI, and all others from 2004 on, have a fuel pump in the tank. Previous TDIs, like the 1999 model belonging to Jetta-novice, do not -- the fuel injection pump pulls or sucks fuel all the way from the tank, then pushes it at high pressure to the individual injectors.

The VE fuel injection system in the 2003-and-earlier TDIs is totally different from the PD system in the 2004-2006 models, and both are totally different from the CR system in the 2009-2011 models.

Welcome, always good to see a newbie who knows what he's doing instead of being totally in over his head.

Hi all,
Just got a 2004 Jetta TDI last week off a fellow club member. So far no problems, and doubtful there will be many. I worked for Corning Inc, in NY, in diesel after-treatment systems, so I'm not completely a novice. Though I'm sure to have questions eventually. I'll be doing an oil change later today, and checking different things out. Just figured I'd post up now. Looks like a great site with tons of info!

As a brand new convert to TDI (2011 Golf) - two observations:

1. My salesman called the Golf TDI a "cult car" - as in not widely known, but with enthusiastic followers among those who know it. I liked that... sort of a Rocky Horror Diesel Show.

2. Just filled up for first time. I was actually nervous at the pumps. That hadn't happened since I was 16. Thankfully the TDI forums had lots of info (ok maybe too much).

Loving the whole experience so far.

Just remember to always refer to it as diesel or as fuel -- never say "gassing up" or "stopping for gas" or "pushing down ont the gas pedal".

Also, never loan your Golf to anyone who does not also own a diesel car. He or she may be tempted to repay your generosity by filling up the tank for you, with gasoline and not diesel. The other risk is that your friend or family member will get into an accident; Golf TDIs are always relatively rare and you may never be able to replace it with another one that's just as good.

My TDI has a problem with what feels like a hiccup in fuel delivery at low speeds. Usually under 80 clicks and not at operating temp. usually goes away at operating temp and usaully will happen only once before getting to temp. VW TECHS have plugged into to check for faults and nothing found. They test drove it and in the words of the tech it felt like a miss fire. They called the tech line and they have no fix for this issue and have had very little complaints on this issue. Payed big bucks for this car. Should I be worried that VW doesn't know how to fix this problem?

I have a 2005 tdi passat wagon and I am about to get some winter rubber and was wondering if anyone had put 205/70/15 tires on. I know the standard size is 195/65/15. My main question is if there will be any rubbing. My main goal is for a little more ground clearance. I won't be doing any speed runs or anything crazy, just 8 months of snow / ice. I'm not concerened about power (as the 2.0 tdi has plenty) or speedometer accuracy.

Don't Coast in DSG

I have had my Jetta TDI 09 since August of 08 and now have 45+K. I am extremely satisfied except for one thing. I was close to getting 45 mpg highway on average when I made a newbie (which I am) mistake. I was coasting downhills in Neutral with my DSG transmission. After my first year and 20,000 the check engine light came on and the "techs" at the dealership (you could tell this engine was new to them) had to fix the transmission to rev higher to burn off the "gook" ( my word). Since then even after the repeat "breaking in" period, I am not even close to where I was before. Just now I was able to get to 42 mpg highway. I asked them to put it back the way it was and they said they could not because it was all controlled by computer and they don't even know what the setting was before.

So a warning to others trying to save fuel by coasting the DSG, you can lose more in the long run.

I felt the same way on my first two fill-ups - HYPER CAREFUL to go to the diesel pumps. Second fill up, pulled into wrong side to get 45 cetane - unless I wanted to try the monster nozzle.

Monsoon remote CD changer swap?

I bought a 2005 Passat and noticed a mount for C/D changer in the trunk and have located one in a junk yard from another Passat; does anyone know if these are “plug & play” or not?

2004 Audi A4 and turbo

I am a newbie so I hope this goes to the correct forum.. sorry if not!
My question/post is:
I have a 2004 Audi A4 with 68,000 miles on it. I recently brought it in to the Audi service center with a complaint of hearing a mild 'rattling/throttling like' sound every time I lift my foot from the accelerator. It is not very loud and tends to be heard more obviously at low speeds, perhaps because the engine sound is not as loud at lower speeds. I was told that I need a new turbo assy estimated cost - $1300.00. The service manager said that it sounds as though a peice of carbon that broke off from the exhaust may be banging around in there and has probably caused some damage. Therefore the turbo needs to be replaced. Any thoughts on this?
I was also told that at bout 75,000 miles I will need a timing belt at the cost of $1000.00. I have had a good run with my Audi but now am thinking "should I keep this car or trade it in while I have relatively low mileage?"
I love this car but perhaps my luck is running out!!!!!! Thanks all...

You are actually in the wrong website. You should go to Audi World.
http://forums.audiworld.com

I don't know whether Audi World is better than TDI Club, but it is the right place for your questions.

this site has been great! I just bought a tdi a few months back. Have a question about the DMF. I have the DSG in an 06 jetta BRM. my car almost feels like it is a manual shift sometime. it doesn't slip under acceleration, or even putting it in gear and pulling it out.

It is a manual shift transmission, that is done by solenoids (simplistically speaking.)

It is nothing like the automatic transmission you are used to.

That is why you have to wait for it to shift from neutral to first when you are ready to leave a stop sign; it is not sitting there pulling against the engine, wasting fuel, when you are stopped.

tdi coming soon
Hello...I'm a newbie and I've been lurking the tdi site for several months now...
I'm a car-shopaholic. I just can't seem to commit to a car for more than 40-50k miles. So every 3 to 4 years I find myself wandering the lots and web.
I currently have a passat with 56k miles, so I'm chompin at the bit for my new car.
My choices are narrowed down to the jsw and the a3 tdi's. I've reserched and test driven both. My passat is beautifully appointed, a glx, so I'm leaning more toward the a3 as it has comparable finishes and refinement. But, the value of the jsw is keeping it in the running as it is easily $7k+ less. I will keep you posted as i'm sure a decision will be made soon...or my husband will divorce me cuz he's tired of hearing me talk cars.:)

We're going to need more information. Maybe start a new thread, with more details?

Hi everyone! I might be the newest newbie to ever check out this forum. Until two years ago, I had driven some form of Jeep vehicle then gas prices jumped through the roof. I was paying $70 every five days to fuel up my V8 engine. Because of that, I jumped to a Nissan Maxima. About a month ago, my transmission started acting up and really went downhill within the past few weeks. Therefore, I decided to look for a new vehicle. My first choice was another Jeep Grand Cherokee, but the mid to high 30's are a little out of my price range right now. Then, on Thursday, I saw an add for a Jetta. After spending an hour on the computer, I found the TDI was the way to go. On Friday, I went down to my local dealership to drive one and the next thing I know, I'm the proud new owner of a 2010 Jetta TDI. I loved it. It's funny, I actually enjoy driving this car. It's no longer just a way to get from point A to point B. To think, a week ago a VW had never crossed my mind. It looks like a ton of great information on the board. I love reading everyone's stories about the own vehicles to see what I have to look forward to.

jeepguy: start out with the breaking-in guidelines thread, started by Drivbiwire. Then check out the maintenance schedules threads, and do not ignore the warnings about terrible VW dealerships -- you might be better off doing your own maintenance than letting the dealership do it for free.
