Just got back from my local Wally and they are out of the "old" Rotella T and they only have new Rottela T6 now and it is $19.50 per gallon which is the same price I paid for "old" style.

IMHO The T6 is just the same stuff as the previous Rotella Synthetic. If they had gone to group IV base I'm sure we would have seen some sort of a price increase.

And as BobF pointed out the 34% better wear performance statement was against the previous API classification (CI-4 PLUS) not the CJ-4 Rotella T synthetic that it is replacing.

But I could be wrong. Just my $.02

I have heard the new RTS is not a GRPIV base stock also Still same old III base, Although I know it does have a few better Viscosity index improvers now for cold temp flow and shear stability and i have noticed since switching to it my passat seems a little happier on the cold starts.. :D

Anybody have a voa for the T6 stuff? I did a voa on the original CJ-4 and the zinc numbers were favourable for running in a pd. Just want to know if they dropped the Zn.

So after reading all that...I'm not sure if the T6 is a good oil or not. I just bought a 2000 Jetta TDI and wanted to change the oil. Always been a fan of the Rotella diesel oil. I run it in my motorcycles.

It's an even better oil than the RTS it is replacing. It's a great oil for your ALH TDI.

Was that the CJ-4 or the CI-4 version?

According to Aaron (BleachedBora - BoraParts.com), the recent formulation of Rotella 5W40 isn't desirable for use in the 2003-and-older TDI's... One quote of his: "we are seeing a lot of Rotella users lately that have cooked turbos (about 10 in the last 4-months or so). Since they changed the formula of Rotella it appears that it does NOT protect the turbo the way it did in the past. Some of the turbos we've had torn down I was told had blue heat markings internally which tends to support the claim that they are running hot. I wouldn't recommend that oil anymore for those reasons."

Let me put it this way. I take care of a lot of TDIs. I put Rotella synthetic in 90% of them. I have changed ZERO turbos.

I respect the heck out of Aaron, but that's his opinion.

It's thicker than the Euro 5w40s the car is spec'd for.

I'm just passing on what we've had experience with; I myself used to run Rotella in my own car. Personally after the formulation change and the fact that a lot of customers needing turbos have been running Rotella lately has led me to no longer recommend it.

IMHO the best oils for these cars are Mobil 1 5W40, Fuchs/Total 5W40 (505.00). In the PDs Pentosin HPII 5W40 or the Lubromoly 5W40, both 505.01.

That's not anything new. But where does it says on the shell website Rotella T6 will destroy your VW motors. I run this oil in multiple cars. even Audi did put this oil in my brand new A4 TFSI, I had to supply the oil. Audi said rotella T6 is a great oil but they brand the castrol(audi) and mobile1 (Porsche).

List of cars i got running on rotella T6

1999 Jetta TDI 180WHP AHU (80 000km on rotella)
1999 Jetta TDI 200WHP 1Z (80 000 km on rotella)
2005 Jetta TDI PD OMFG 505.01 required (40 000km on rotella)
2005 Passat TDI PD (50 000km on rotella)
2005 Passat TDI PD (20 000km on rotella)
2006 S4 4.2L V8 (10 000km) Oil consumption drop by 75%
2011 A4 2.0L TFSI (8000km)

All of them sound quieter and less valve train noise and less oil consumption. Analysis proved its a great oil.

Directly from shell. Rotella T6 is not approved for Volkswagen!
Of course it isn't "approved"... Shell didn't submit (and pay for) the oil to be tested by VW in order to get their approval.

However, at least for the 2003-and-older TDIs, the oil meets (exceeds, actually) the published specs, although whether it's the "ideal" oil for some people remains a personal choice.

In any case, many people regard it as being far superior to the Castrol Syntec 5W-40 which was the "factory approved" lubricant at the time.
