VOLKSWAGEN PASSAT TDI® CLEAN DIESEL SETS WORLD RECORD FOR FUEL ECONOMY AROUND THE LOWER 48 U.S. STATES - AT 77.99 MPG!

Volkswagen of America beats the GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS® achievement for the lowest fuel consumption-48 U.S. States

Herndon, Va., June 24, 2013 - Volkswagen of America announced today that it has set a new GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS® achievement for the "lowest fuel consumption-48 U.S. states for a non-hybrid car" category with a stellar 77.99 mpg - more than 10 mpg better than the previous mark of 67.9 mpg. The achievement also beats the hybrid vehicle record of 64.6 mpg by more than 13 mpg.

The Passat TDI Clean Diesel departed from Volkswagen of America's headquarters in Herndon, Virginia, on Friday, June 7th, at 12:00pm and arrived back on June 24th, having covered 8122 miles and visited all 48 states. The car, along with drivers Wayne Gerdes and Bob Winger, were greeted in Herndon by Volkswagen employees as well as Virginia State Delegates Tom Rust and Jim LeMunyon.

Delegate Tom Rust said: "Breaking a world record is a huge accomplishment, and I'm especially pleased that Volkswagen of America-a Herndon, Virginia-based company-is doing its part to make its products more environmentally compatible and less dependent on foreign oil by using cutting-edge diesel technology. Congratulations!"

Jonathan Browning, President and CEO, Volkswagen Group of America, Inc., said: "To cover 8122 miles on just 104.94 gallons of fuel is nothing short of astonishing and shows just how economical our TDI Clean Diesel vehicles can be. Even for everyday drivers, the mileage benefits of our TDI engines are significant: Volkswagen has no fewer than six TDI Clean Diesel models that achieve an EPA estimated fuel economy rating of 40 mpg or better on the highway."

Wayne Gerdes, founder of cleanmpg.com was the primary driver. Automotive journalist Gerdes has made a career out of hypermiling and has set mileage records in more than 100 vehicles, as well as achieving the record for lowest fuel consumption in the lower 48 U.S. states with a hybrid vehicle at 64.6 mpg. His co-driver was Bob Winger, an electronics engineer long involved in energy and conservation projects.

"We felt we had a good chance of beating the existing record with the Passat TDI," Gerdes said, "but to smash it by averaging 77.99 mpg is really impressive and a testament to the potential of Volkswagen's TDI Clean Diesel vehicles. Obviously, we employ some specialized techniques to achieve such figures, but there's no reason why owners of TDI vehicles shouldn't be able to achieve great mileage with a few simple pointers." Gerdes suggests:
• Plan in advance: look for impediments or topography 15 to 45 seconds ahead, rather than reacting to where you're currently driving. Use downhill momentum to help crest an uphill section.
• Allow the rabbits to win the race to the stoplights. Heavy braking and acceleration consume fuel at a far greater rate than coasting between intersections.
• Obey speed limits: The difference in fuel economy between 55 mph and 75 mph can be as much as 30 percent or even higher in some cars.
The 2013 Passat TDI uses Volkswagen's advanced turbocharged and direct-injection Clean Diesel engine to achieve EPA estimated highway fuel economy of 43 miles per gallon when equipped with the six-speed manual transmission. This enables the Passat TDI to go up to 795 highway miles before needing to refuel.

Clean Diesel engines are just one part of Volkswagen's approach to sustainable mobility, encapsulated by the Think Blue.® philosophy. Volkswagen employs a wide range of powertrains-diesel, electric, hybrid, and intelligently downsized turbocharged gasoline engines-in its quest to be among the most eco-conscious automakers in the world. That approach extends to the factories in which the cars are built and the processes by which they are made.

For the attempt, the Passat TDI used Shell ultra-low-sulfur diesel fuel, available at nearly 8,000 Shell stations nationwide, and Continental PureContact® with EcoPlus® Technology tires, which have Tg-F polymers to help reduce rolling resistance and improve fuel efficiency. The record-setting Passat TDI was equipped with a Linear Logic ScanGauge II to precisely measure fuel economy and a Droid® RAZR MAXX™ HD by Motorola® smartphone to provide Guinness World Records tracking requirements and long-lasting connectivity.

2013 Passat TDI Clean Diesel (manual transmission) EPA estimates: 31 city/43 highway mpg. Range based on 43 mpg highway EPA estimate and an 18.5-gallon fuel tank. Actual mileage will vary and depends on several factors including driving habits and vehicle condition.

"Volkswagen has announced the company's Passat TDI has set a new world record for the category of "lowest fuel consumption-48 US states for a non-hybrid car." Drivers Wayne Gerdes and Bob Winger managed an impressive 77.99 miles per gallon over 8,122 miles."

"For this particular world record, Gerdes and Winger visited all 48 contiguous states in 17 days, and Guinness World Records has certified the endeavor."

This made me chuckle! :) For the record I am neither pro or anti Shell.

But surely the "tips" are geared to the masses, and non-high efficiency diesels.
In my TDI, gentle acceleration is far worse for fuel economy than getting up to speed promptly and into as high as gear/low RPM as appropriate for the desired speed.

I've done the same stretch of road over and over with both gentle and hard acceleration to get up to speed, and my Scanguage shows significantly less fuel used on the aggressive legs.

Y'know, I'm happy to see good mileage as much as the next guy. Last Sunday I went for a 1+ hour drive up north to a state park to go for a hike. Strong wind from the south, and I got 50mpg going 70mph with all the windows open. And on the return trip I averaged 45mpg.

But these mileage competitions are ridiculous. What's the point? Who wants to drive this way? Take a joy ride, and take all of the joy out of it? Bah.

I try to minimize my gallons burned per year. Part of that is getting good mpg, another part is only driving when needed.

Driving 8100 miles to see how little you can burn seems to me an oxymoron.

I read some of the replies and had to stop, the arrogance of some of the ignorant arses on there was unbelievable. I thought for a minute I reading on a dumb Prius site filled with eco wackos that don't know their ars from a hole in the ground .... It wasn't worth the effort to sign in to correct some of the ignorant assumptions posted there....

Last week on a 150 mile trip in NC I recorded 56 mpg on my 2013 Jetta which is not even broken in yet. Quite impressive as I wasn't using any of these "fuel-saving" techniques and was always traveling 5-6 mph over the speed limit (70-71 mph).

Incredible that they could drive that entire distance in a manual transmission Passat TDI without craving a sunroof or leather seats! (or maybe it was a Canadian version, heaven forbid)

I wonder how long it would take to mess up the DPF hypermiling in the Passat by turning the car off when coasting.

Given the tiny amount of fuel it consumes at idle, I think turning it off during coasting is a ridiculous idea.

Wow! Fantastic mpg!

The Passat TDI is amazing, if you drive at normal speeds on the highway (even slightly above the speed limit) you can easily get 50+ mpg. This car is very underrated.

My guess is that they probably were and it got unhappy about it.

They obviously don't understand what the DPF light means, either... since they seem to think it indicates that a regen is taking place, which it most certainly does not.

Guiness record or not, 77.99 mpg sounds to good to be true.

I'll be more inclined to believe it if others can duplicate this claim.

Others have come close. What don't you believe?

I got 60 MPG on the way back from Atlantic City late one night.

Here is another couple who averaged 84 MPG over 1,600 miles - one tank of fuel. http://blogs.cars.com/kickingtires/2012/05/84-mpg-couple-break-mileage-record-with-passat-tdi.html
Congrats on 60 mpg. I once got 56 coast to coast. Less after ULSD came online.

I congratulate them. But 78 and 84 mpg, in a Passat? At what speed? I sure would like to ride along and see how it's done.

How many club member here can pull mpg numbers well in excess of factory estimated mpg numbers even once let alone on a regular basis?

Their speed pace was probably nothing similar to our real world experience in our TDIs and highways.

That's the first and most important problem.

On the average so far the new Prius is beating the new Passat TDI in MPG (47 vs. 40 MPG according to Fuelly).

Yes, but the former suffers from vehicular castration, and the later is a blast to drive......

I don't think I have the mental fortitude to go the distance they did, but 100 miles, 250 miles, 500 miles have been done at the high 70's - low 80's mpg over and over and over, and in several models, body styles and engine generations of TDI (and on lower BTU content B99 and B100).
My personal suspicion is that 85 mpg is about the limit without getting on a closed course.
