Hi everyone,

I recently purchased a 2002 Jetta tdi, I've always been a JDM person but with my commutes changing from 30kms a day to 150kms I figured I would give diesel a shot

after nearly a month of owning it I filled up twice. each yielding me at least 650kms in mostly city conditions, incredible! While it is slower than I'm used to, i dont mind as long as the fuel economy is great

I'm also looking for a couple of parts: MAF sensor, rear shocks, and a key fob cover. If you have any of these or know where to get them PM me or post here please!

Congrats on the car... but only 650km a tank? I know it's all city, but you still get more, how much did you fill up?

thanks everyone!

I'm going to be pretty busy this weekend actually, cleaning the soot from the intake and egr valve, it was caked on in there! the previous owner didnt change the glowplugs in a long time either so probably going to do that as well. hoping that'll be some difference

anything else I should check for? the MAF sensor is definitely bad because I pulled it and the car ran alot better, pretty pricey at $140 from part source, ouch!

Intake manifold cleaning with egr is a great start.

Look at replacing the Vacuum lines. I found that it is a noticeable improvement when you replace them.

Getting new glow plugs won't hurt. I just picked up Bosch Duraterm, waiting to put them in. If you do plan on installing them, pickup some PB blaster and spray the existing plugs in there.

Sometimes they can snap off and then you'll be in a world of hurt. If you do try to remove them, do them right after the engine was shut off and it's reached operating temps.

^ +1 on Brian's parts...

One thing for sure is that we've been pretty spoiled with the cheap jdm prices. Those days are long gone my friend :D

Welcome to the club.

+2 on Brian (Roseland Technical Services)

Awesome guy to get parts from, delivered to your doorstep.

There is also Precision Tuning Motorsports (Perjad), another awesome member/vendor for parts. He is around the Keele and 7 area.

Do you have a 5 speed? I would assume you do. If its too slow tune it!! an 02 is easy to mod and you would love the power and fuel economy. I have a 04 with 530k on it and drive like i stole it every day. Malone stage 1.5

yeah its unreal how much the price difference is! one of the hinges on my glovebox is broken and some people want upto $60 just for the compartment piece!!! If it was a civic I could go to the junkyard and yank off a cover for basically free!

Yeah when i picked up the Golf recently. The right side hinge was broken on the glove. I did get a spare glove to put in. I'm really surprised how small those boxes are compared to my mk3. I read on tdiclub that there is a larger glove box. I might start looking around for that instead of installing this small guy.

Buy the 2004+ glove box...I would strongly recommend it. This past winter I broke two glove boxes, just by opening one and closing the other. The older design uses a piston, the newer design uses a gear.

When we had that crazy freeze this past winter, the piston pretty much froze and with all the plastics being cold and hard, it broke instantly when I tried to open it.

Bought the newer glove box, never had anymore issues.

I think they got away from the piston even earlier that that.. 2002 I picked up had no piston but the latch was broke... i was at hill top recycling on davis drive saturday. Picked up good working newer style glove box and center cup holders. They had two other working glove boxes. I think one newer and one older style

Update, car is off the road for at least a week, had to do major maintenance and replacement of some parts, some include: alternator, rear shocks, maf sensor, fuel filter, radiator, and finally i am going to do timing belt and water pump since i have the front opened up anyways...

anyone have tips for the timing belt? it seems like a daunting task

There's a great HOWTO that outlines the entire job.
