Purchased a brand new 2011 Jetti TDI. Traded my 2009 Camery SE V6. I was tired of going to the gas station 2-3 times a week. I looked into the Hybrid Camery and Civic and the Jetti TDI, well decided on the TDI.

This is my first VW and this car is awesome! I still have a full tank and the gauge says 148 miles!! and getting 48-52 mpg!!

Just got the windows tinted and 3M Clear Bra done for the front bumper and side mirrors.

I'm interest in getting 17inch wheels, would this hurt my MPG? Also, I was told that NITROGEN would help my MPG as well, is this really true? As anyone done this before?

BTW...this website is very informative!

Congrats! Good choice. I just traded my Altima Hybrid (same hybrid driveline as the Camry Hybrid) and I have to say that it takes a lot of conscious and deliberate work to save gas, and that kills a lot of the driving enjoyment (at least for me.). The TDI is a hoot to drive with all that torque, and the great fuel mileage makes it unbeatable.

In my opinion, 17 wheels shouldn't affect mileage too much as long as you're reasonable with the weight of the wheel. Golf TDIs and Jetta Sport Wagen TDIs come with 17 inch wheels stock.

Nitrogen is more stable (unaffected) by heat and will give you more consistent tire pressures. If it's free, take it. Otherwise regular air from a compressor is just fine as well.

When you get your tires filled with Nitrogen, it is supposed to make them last longer. This is because the normal compressed air in tires will have Oxygen and Hydrogen, so you can get condensation inside, causing the rim to rust and/or the tire to rot. Pure Nitrogen does not allow for condensation and it is lighter than air, causing the mass of the wheel to go down. Yes, the savings in mass are minimal but theoretically, you'll save fuel.

getting 48-52 mpg

Well maybe. It is certainly not impossible, but it has a lot to do with your personal driving style and road conditions. The built in mileage gauge is more of a intelligent guess, than a measured value.

Driving and giving feed back, in the form of telling it how many miles and gallons you have between fill ups will improve it's accuracy.

I would agree with raking and astoryatthree.

RTKING - Does the JSW and the Golf with 17s, from factory, do they get the same gas mileage as the JETTI TDI?

JOE_MEEHAN - I was going by the gauge...

I will post results after my first fill up as well.

Also, I have a IPHONE 4 and the bluetooth does not allow me to change the songs on the steering wheel, I have to use my IPHONE to change songs. If I used a SIM CARD, will this allow me to change the songs on the steering wheel?

I just got a 2011 JTDI Highline DSG and am closing in on my first tank of gas. If the console is correct I might get 870 km. Not bad for a first tank. I drive probably 70% highway. I do notice a whistle coming from the drivers side mirror at highway speeds.Any fixes for this?

Couple things:

The dealership most likely topped your car off before you took delivery, so dont pay to much attention to MPG at the moment. Depending on how you drive and where you drive, will ultimately determine your MPG. But you should be in the range or 37-45 MPG average, you should have a good benchmark after about 5,000 miles. Also don't pay attention to much to that gauge, its changes more then the the price of diesel.

As far as the BT question, if your phone has the options to control music players via BT, it "should" be possible. That said, VW does not support this feature yet, your best bet is going to be MDI with BT, MDI for your music control (ipod) and BT for your phone calls.

Goodluck, and welcome.

wow....great feed back on this....

ok....looking to upgrading to a 17inch wheel. I checked out the MYTURBODIESEL website and saw the pictures of the wheels. I dont want to lose my fuel milage so what is a good tire to run?

Can I use the HANKOOK Tire but get them in 17s? Are they good tires? Michelin? Contienteal?

Thanks again with all the feed back....

The theory behind bigger wheel size seems to be in favor of MPG. Bigger wheel = less rotations. However weight factors in and rotational mass, tire resistance, blah blah blah, im no math expert but I am sure there is a way to figure it out.

I would just plan something like this as a "look" mod. I would love to have 19's for look, but who knows what it would do to my MPG which I very much enjoy at the moment.

Yes, I agree with you as well. I bought this car for the MPG so the looks is not really important. However, the JSW and the Passat has 17inch wheels. With the same motor TDI 2.0 as the Jetti, from the factory they both have the same MPG rating from Factory. Again, I'm new to this VW industry, perhaps I'm missing something???

Hi Ravens,

Yes, the JSW and the Golf TDIs with the 17" wheels are rated at the same fuel econmy as the Jetta TDI.

Personally, I'm going to stick with 16" wheels as I drive too many miles per year and tire replacement will be cheaper than with the 17" wheels. I do like the look of 17" wheels, especially if the car is lowered slightly, however.
