Hello all, I’m considering purchasing a VW with the 1.9L diesel engine; I’d like some advise.
• I have owned a diesel pickup truck before but never a diesel small car
• I’m decent with a wrench and like doing most of my own maintenance and a great deal of auto repair work
I’d be interested to find out the fuel pressure differences in the different styles of 1.9L along with any troublesome years to stay away from. There’s currently a 2001 Beetle w/manual trans in my area listed at $5000 I’m going to look at. I’m not a fan of the Beetle but I do like the pre-2004 emissions rules that killed off the 7.3L PowerStroke from Ford.
I work base operations for the offshore oil & gas industry so I come across a lot of used vegetable oil being returned. The caterer would be pleased if I took it because they would save what they’re paying in disposal. So my intent would be to mix the WVO with fuel for use rather then drop the money into a conversion kit (I’m interested in this to save money after all), so the older lower fuel pressure engines would be needed.
I intend this as a second vehicle strictly for my commute to work, which is 60 miles each way, 50 miles of it being without any stops. I’m estimating with $3 gasoline and $4 diesel prices the expected 50 MPG on straight diesel would save me $85 a month just in fuel, saving even more utilizing WVO. Add to that it’ll save me about $8000 in depreciation mileage on my new truck in a 4-5 year span.
My wallet is telling me to buy a used Honda Fit which would be about the same in fuel savings without WVO considered, my heart & soul is telling me to buy a hot used hatch (Golf GTI or Ford Focus ST) which would amount to $30-50 a month in fuel savings and my curiosity is telling me to buy a VW diesel. I’m quite torn between the three and I’ll surely regret purchasing one and not the other two options.
Thank you for any responses.
