Looking for a 1.9L
Hello all, I’m considering purchasing a VW with the 1.9L diesel engine; I’d like some advise.
• I have owned a diesel pickup truck before but never a diesel small car
• I’m decent with a wrench and like doing most of my own maintenance and a great deal of auto repair work

I’d be interested to find out the fuel pressure differences in the different styles of 1.9L along with any troublesome years to stay away from. There’s currently a 2001 Beetle w/manual trans in my area listed at $5000 I’m going to look at. I’m not a fan of the Beetle but I do like the pre-2004 emissions rules that killed off the 7.3L PowerStroke from Ford.

I work base operations for the offshore oil & gas industry so I come across a lot of used vegetable oil being returned. The caterer would be pleased if I took it because they would save what they’re paying in disposal. So my intent would be to mix the WVO with fuel for use rather then drop the money into a conversion kit (I’m interested in this to save money after all), so the older lower fuel pressure engines would be needed.

I intend this as a second vehicle strictly for my commute to work, which is 60 miles each way, 50 miles of it being without any stops. I’m estimating with $3 gasoline and $4 diesel prices the expected 50 MPG on straight diesel would save me $85 a month just in fuel, saving even more utilizing WVO. Add to that it’ll save me about $8000 in depreciation mileage on my new truck in a 4-5 year span.

My wallet is telling me to buy a used Honda Fit which would be about the same in fuel savings without WVO considered, my heart & soul is telling me to buy a hot used hatch (Golf GTI or Ford Focus ST) which would amount to $30-50 a month in fuel savings and my curiosity is telling me to buy a VW diesel. I’m quite torn between the three and I’ll surely regret purchasing one and not the other two options.

Thank you for any responses.

The general consensus around here is that the 1995.5-2003 VW 1.9 tdi is the best. The engine code is ALH. They are fueled by a bosch VE pump. The engine with regular maintenance and timing belt changes will last forever. The manual is the one you want as the auto attached to the ALH isn't great. No stop and go in a tdi will yield a 50 mpg no problem. These cars take well to mods, injectors, turbo, clutch and a tune and you will be putting out 150hp and 350tq which makes them a fun daily. Best part is it does better on fuel with these mods, 55mpg. The 2004-2006 diesel cars are good as well but have a problem wearing through cams. Again they take well to mods.

Not going to be a 7.3 power stroke, no matter. That said the pre-DPF diesels are harder and harder to come by. The old IDI 1.6 & 1.9's, especially the TD versions, are rare and expensive but suitable for your intentions. Unless its an unlimited $ and time challenge, for your goals, I'd stay away from the other stuff.

What @JELLOWSUBMARINE is saying is that a TDI (1.9L) is not a good platform for WVO, better to find a TD or an old Merc 300D those would have less issues with alt fuels.

Or this!
I'd own something like this if it weren't for this goofy state of Ca.

I don’t have that problem, Louisiana doesn’t even do tailpipe test. But I do want to stay with something with easy to find parts.

Easy to find is getting harder for these cars. Common engine stuff isn't too hard for online shopping, not so much over the counter though. Other parts like interior and such are getting to be no longer available.

1998 and earlier, but not by too much. Maybe 1996-1998
The diesel (idi 1.5) goes back to 1980 in the pickup, maybe(?) further in the Rabbit

06 or 07 I think. Its mostly the delicate direct injection "clean diesel" that sux for black/wvo conversion.
