Tomorrow ( Jan 14th ) I take possession of not only my first TDI but also my first VW. I purchased a 2011 Jetta with the DSG option. I found this site after deciding to make my purchase, but I am glad to have stumbled across such good forums. I have been glued here for the last few days learning everything I can…. Man there is a lot to learn. I am not new to modifying vehicles although my last projects have all been 4x4 Jeeps built for rock and mud…. I changed my workplace and now my commute has forced me to abandon my 4L box on wheels for something a little more forgiving at the pumps.
I test drove a manual 2011 Golf wagon and loved it, but decided the Jetta TDI would be a better fit for my needs and the DSG option mostly for my wife who refuses to learn how to operate a manual transmission.
Like many people foreign to diesel vehicles I was also under the impression that they stink, don’t start in cold weather ( I live in Penetanguishene Ontario… cold start problems would be bad for me ) and have no get-up-and-go. I admit I was wrong.
I can’t wait to pick it up tomorrow evening, and start wrenching on it once I figure out what kind of changes I can make without affecting my warranty. Any changes I make will be minor as I am not taking it to the track, just to work and back. I will want to be sure it is optimized for winter conditions and also getting the benefits of some of the aftermarket products mentioned on the various forums here.
I think I have come to the right place to learn and experiment.
Cheers.
