It looks like a new 2.0 TDI will join the family in the later part of calendar 2003!
The new 2004 Passat TDI - it should have 134HP and who knows how much torque!

Hmm. If this is a reliable source, this is the first we've heard of the specs (2.0L - 134hp). But it specifically says "sedan". I wonder if the wagon will be available too?

I'm a little confused about the 2.0L unit. This engine is not available even in Germany, at least according to the VWAG website. Given that, should we expect it to be on a N.American Passat within a year ?

That engine has been in the works for quite some time. I first posted excepts of an article from Automotive Engineer magazine back in 1999 about the development of this engine.

I heard about it again from someone else in the forums sometime in 2001 about plans for a 175hp version of this engine to be put into the next generation Golf/Jetta.

More recently I was in my local VW dealership where I formerly worked, and was told that the Passat with 136hp TDI engines would be introduced at the very end of this year as a MY04 model.

What we do know about this engine is that it is 2.0 litres in displacement (actually exactly 81mm bore x 95.5mm stroke for 1968cc); 4 valves per cylinder; Pumpe-düse injection central-vertically mounted; and if this engine is to have a lifespan of more than 1 year, US Tier-2 and Euro IV emissions compliant.

Actually, the new 2.0L TDI will be available in Europe in the Spring inside a brand new Touran mini-minivan. It looks like the 136HP rating is more acurate rather than 134HP. And the TORQUE figure is 320Nm between 1750 and 2500 rpm!!! Introduction of the Touran in Europe in a couple of months makes the introduction of 2004 Passat TDI in late 2003 sound more likely.
