Out here is British Columbia, they have newer and much stricter opacity emmissions tests on diesels. Previously, on a scale of 0 to 20, my chev truck diesel ( 85 ) ran very low at a 1
this year, it fialed the first test, and after adjusting the timing back a bit, it barely squeaked in at 28.65! The new threshold is 0 to 30, and actually goes thru dyno acceleration from 40 to 90 km/hr. Any comments on the emmisions of this and vw diesels?

Here is an excerpt from an reply to a email I sent to www.driveclean.com concerning my repowering of a 74 Dodge Power Wagon with a diesel. Now, this vehicle was never offered with a diesel, and I did not mention the vehicle year to them, as any light duty vehicle over 20yrs old here in ON is exempt anyway.

Your vehicle will be exempt from the requirements for emissions controls, since
it falls into the class of hot rod. As a diesel, it will be subject to a visual
test whereby the vehicle is idled for 5 minutes and the amount of smoke it emits
is observed. More than five consecutive seconds of visible smoke in any one
minute period will fail the vehicle.

In the near future, light-duty diesels will be tested on a dynamometer and the
emissions will be measured according to smoke density standards. But we do not
yet know when the new test procedures will be in place.

This is from Nov2000, so when & what exactly we will get is yet TBD...
Is there a link to BC's emmissions testing people? Pls post if you have it, I'd like to campare a few things to our testing here, it's been a few yrs since I've been in Vancouver

Some older high mileage VW's may have trouble with these newer specs. My 87TD would make the car behind disappear given the right 'motivation', but I doubt any good running TDI will have a problem for a long long time.
