So VW is done with diesels for now in the US--very sad.

It looks like Audi may keep the A3 TDI for now, once they start reselling them?

What else is out there? Cheaper Chevy Cruze or the ritzier BMW?

Dodge Eco Diesel? ;)

I think Mazda announces every year they are going to bring the Mazda 6 with a diesel. I really wished they would!

I think it would be affordable, dependable and looks good.

I have a appointment to turn in my Passat this Friday at 2:30. I hope it all goes well, because I just bought a Jaguar F-Pace Diesel. I have had it for 5 days now, and LOVE IT! There is a lot of value in the F-Pace, the base price is $41000, and for around $50K you get a very well loaded luxury SUV. It is a bit early to let you know the milage I am getting, but the reading show that I am getting about 27 MPG around town, but I think it is more. http://www.jaguarusa.com/all-models...424-641450&gclid=CODZoNjg0NACFQkJaQodYMUOCA&c

How is it inside...does it feel cheap, anything out of place, blind spots or anything that doesnt make sense in the 5 days you've had it? Thanks.

You could go with a CPO BMW diesel. I have had a 2013 BMW X5 diesel for a month now. Its in like new condition. Drove back from central NJ on Monday, 28 mpg average, doing about 75 mph on the Interstate portions of the trip.

There are threads here about this! Mazda officially announced that their 2.2l diesel is coming to the US in Q2 2017! it is going to be an option on the CX-5, I am not sure what other models will get this option.

Audi is going to keep the A3 TDI? If so, I may go for that.

If not, a used Audi Q5 TDI might get the nod.
Unlikely. VW/Audi diesels are done in North America. There's a small door left open for a high-end premium model, but the Audi A3 is basically a Golf, and those are done.

Don't forget that the Chevrolet Cruze and Equinox diesels will be out for model year 2018. The D2UX Equinox isn't starting production until mid-2017 and the diesel will come sometime after that (it won't be available at launch).

The BMW is the same price as the Jaguar. Anyone know more about either of these cars?

I forgot about the Jeep Cherokee which I believe you can still get a diesel.

The Dodge Eco diesel, from reports I here, can get 28 on the highway, and the pickup part is attractive to some people. Italian engine.

Here's a list so far, if you think of anything else I'd like to add it so someone else sees this. How about more some more discussion on these?

Jetta/Audi Sedan Replacements:

  • BMW 3 Series
  • Chevy Cruze
Fringe economical:Jeep Cherokee
  • Jaguar F-Pace
  • Dodge Ram 1500 (Eco)
  • Chevy Colorodo
  • GMC Canyon

Im gonna drive one this week. I've read reviews that comment on the cheap plain Jane plastic interior-this is an luxury CUV after all.

It's not just the Jaguar F-Pace, it's also the new XE and the XF. In the XF, the 180hp diesel is the default entry-level engine, replacing the gasoline I4. Suggests plenty of faith in the technology.

I Love it, It has blind spot sensors in the mirror, and even shines a round light as you get out with JAGUAR in the middle. It is pure luxury, that is why I bought it, less than anything else I looked at, and more options. Great value for a classy SUV.
Also it has sport mode with paddle shifters on the steering wheel, ECO mode for fuel milage, Dynamic, and Normal. Full panoramic sun roof. I also like they have the DEF tank access in with the fuel cap, not inside the trunk like the VW (not that I ever had to add any, my turn in will have less than 22,000 miles)

This time they're saying they'll bring the diesel CX-5 to North America.

We just bought a 2008 Jeep Grand Cherokee diesel. Not new, but it is replacing a F250 4x4 power stroke diesel. We don't need a truck anymore, but still need 4x4. Gets about 10-15 mpg better than the truck. Our entire driving fleet is diesel, as is the tractor and standby genset.

The thing is, do the diesel SUV's get appreciably better MPG than their gasoline versions? For instance, the 2017 Toyota Highlander is EPA rated at 26 MPG. Would it really pay in the long run to find a comparable diesel SUV, once they arrive? The diesel sedans seem to be the only vehicles which really excel at fuel economy. Presumably one pays more for a diesel SUV up front, to gain only a pittance in economy?

If you look at the Specs for the F-Pace the gas engine gets 23mpg highway and the diesel gets 33mpg highway, that is a 43% increase in fuel mileage. This may be a pretty extreme example because of the vast difference in power of the 2 engines, 340 vs. 180 HP.

Yes, not exactly apples and apples. Cannot find it now, but how about something like the Touareg? Possibly I am in error, but it seems some makes were only like 5 MPG apart. Still a lover of oil-burners, and wish they would come back to the U.S.

You have to look at it in percentage form rather than in MPG form because a 5mpg increase on a 20mpg car is 25%, but on a 40mpg car you would have to increase the mileage by 10mpg to get a 25% increase. The way we rate fuel mileage in the US has a tendency to skew the way people view the numbers a bit. If you convert MPG to gallons/100 miles, I think it makes the comparison more clear.

Had diesels for a long time, beginning with my Benz 240D, SDL's, E320
CDI's, etc and went for 2 TDI SEL's. The problem now is the emission systems, when it is time to do a DPF, etc, it is much too expensive. Bought a Hyundai Genesis. So long.

At least the torque ratings are close: 332 vs. 318, I think.

i really don't see any of these "new" diesels come any where close to the mpg's that the vw tdi's have... that is why I am keeping mine..not to mention the power ratings that are fine stock on the tdi's with mods that can improve BOTH mpg's AND power! Mine is a 2011 so NO scr system! Gotta love them i.m.h.o.!

Agreed, the diesel emission systems are becoming overwhelming. Test drove the Genesis myself, and very impressive, especially when price is factored in. We need something a bit more utilitarian, so considering A Toyota Highlander. What scares me in the gasoline world, especially with Audi/VW products, are the intake valve deposits. Toyota is now incorporating port/direct injection, which should solve the issue. Don't know for sure, but I highly suspect turbo engines are worse, the higher pressures creating additional EGR gases.
