After the fun and games of finding (thanks Devious!) a Sportwagen in the USA, it is now in my driveway!
I have posted pics in the Members area (http://pics.tdiclub.com/showgallery.php?cat=4975)
the car has not yet been to Canadian Tire for the RIV and I really do not want to mount the front plate as it just wrong! I think we should be able to put a European style plate (with the same numbers mind you) or register the car in Quebec where they know front plates are nonsense!
www.fruitlands.net/tdi is where she came from. I heartily recommend the experience of dealing with Dale Newton, the vendor.:D

Fred, congrats. While the process and complications of bringing a USA car into Canada are still fresh in your mind, can you discuss what's involved?

Thx.

depending on what border crossing you use (we used Lewiston NY because they allowed the use of fax and/or e-mail to send the bill of sale and title to the vehicle clearing office. the border crossing requires these documents (ORIGINALS) 72 hours in advance. get to the US inspection office. they photocopy these documents and then come out to cross-check against the VIN and then wish you a good day "Now go pay your taxes in Canada" and yes, that was a quote! So when I get to Canada, tell the border guard what's what, he writes it all down on the yellow pad and then tells you to go the reporting centre where they stand your papers with an RIV (Registrar of Imported Vehicles) and you pay your GST (Grab Steal and Take) tax, currently at 5% and a 100$ excise tax (kicking you while you're down a grand and a bit for the aforementioned GST!). They never looked in the car at all which was good as the Sportwagen has lots of hiding places for stuff (illegal smokes and the like which I am now going to sell to try to pay off the 8% PST which comes when I have to plate the vehicle here). The RIV is 194$ which includes the Federal inspection at Canadian Tire, which is the only time their going to see this car (insert hopeful smiley face here). All in all, the experience has been just that, a good experience. I got a great car at a great price (one of the managers at work picked up a car from the same place).
I am wondering if Dalton is going to want is emissions blood too, this from 2009s Green Car of the Year. I am guessing yes.
Any other questions, Devious on the Ontario Forum went through the same experience.
Every dealer I am sure is not as easy going as Dale when it comes time to payment. I recommend him wholeheartedly!

My experience is that it's easier to bring and register a CDN registered car to the US than a US registered car to Canada. I was in and out w/in 1/2 hour to register a car, and cost $300 -Used car tax -ad valurem tax, Tag, Title, & Sticker for the year-. The saving buying a US registered car is unbeliveable that it outweighs the complexity of registering it.

it is all the clutch and grab, I would say 1/2 hour tops is what it took us, 10 minutes in US, 20 in Canada. easy-peasey! now to the rest of the follow-up stuff, I have 30 days till the trip permit expires!

What plates were on the car when you drove it from the dealer to the border?

Thanks Fred.

So, there are no modifications to the vehicle ?? No verification of DRLs or speedo reading in kms? Seems too easy if it's only paperwork and paying taxes...

thanks for the info.

the car is not registered here yet
DRLs are standard now. I was relieved when I saw the DRL light on the dash. The speedo has large number miles and small number kms (I was brought up with miles before Canada converted to 'French'!)
no mods except now the digital stuff reads metric.
simple as that...
RIV next step then damned front plate!

I know the DRLs are standard on these cars for years. But let's pretend for a minute it was another car from the USA that did not have DRLs. Then what?

well then you have to have them hooked up somehow (preferably not at Canadian Tire where the RIV is sending everyone now!) maybe VCDS can do this but I am not sure.

From Transport Canada website, which is updated yearly, there's a list of nonadmissable and admissible US cars to Canada. So, if you buy an admissable US registered car then there's no further mods needed to the car. If you buy a nonadmissable US car, it can be very complicated.

Then the car has to be certified for road worthy and safety in ON, by a qualify certified Tech. who knows how to inspect imported vehicles. As well you have to take the car for e-test. Safety Inspection is once in a life time of ownership of a vehicle, and e-test is every 2 years

The owner will get a letter from the RIV office. During the RIV inspection, the inspector will inspect the speedometer, for dual mph/kph display, and noted on the inspection report that the odometer is in miles. Check for DRL, exterior lights, seat belts, tether anchors. The inspector also verifies the VIN, mfr plate, and records the vehicle weights, and tire pressures. Once the inspection is done, the report is faxed to the RIV office. W/i 2-weeks owner will get an RIV sticker which states the vehicle weight, tire pressure etc. in metric. This sticker has to be affixed somewhere near the mfr. plate.

If it fails then there's a written report and owner has to take the car back to the
Tech. who safety the car. So it's very important to have a Tech. with imported vehicles knowleage so owner doesn't have to take the car back to the Tech. for mods. work, and back for another RIV inspection. Some Techs will knowingly do this to generate extra income during this tough economic times

why does RIV use Canadian Tire I wonder?

On another completely unrelated note to importation but, in fact, related to Canadian Tire, has anyone noted that all the 'new' rest stops being built east of Toronto, they have Canadian Tire gas bars?

My guess is, there's a Crappy tire in very corner? My understanding that it doesn't pay enough for an independent shop to be certified and complianced with Canada Tranport RIV program. The inspection doesn't cost a penny, in and out w/i 1/2 hr, it's part of the ~ $200 cost at the Canada Customs.

Congrats on making it back with your new ride. I'm a little further ahead as my 2010 is plated, but everything should be the same. I agree with Fred that Dale is easy as pie to deal with. I wondered before making the trip with my money order -- is he going to make me wait the 3 days to make sure it clears -- there is a fair bit of trust going on. Was great to get the temp plate -- saved me having to pay any state tax to get out of dodge -- careful of this in other states or from private sellers where you have to have it plated to drive home.

Re your question about e-test, Fred -- The government eventually had some sanity hit them in the head, and you won't need an e-test until your car is 5 years old. You will need to pay your RIV, pass your inspection, get a safety done and then take all of that good stuff to the MTO to pay your HST (minus what you paid at the border).

I was pretty surprised how unsure they were at the MTO how to handle the HST. The guy serving me had to ask someone else, and then do the calculations on his calculator -- but in the end i was charged as expected.

For safety, I called around a few places and most were $95+. Active Green and Ross (I suspect all of them, but i used Oakville as its real close) charged only $69+5 for the cert.
