'02 Jetta auto with 170k miles. Suddenly started making a pretty high pitched screeching. Almost like a fan belt.

Only happens with engine under moderate to heavy load and somewhat engine speed dependent. It comes on about 1800 rpm.

At steady speed no noise. Accelerate it comes back.

Get it in reverse or any forward gear.

In neutral I get for a moment if I stomp on it.

Any ideas what it is?

How long since the TB was changed? I just had a water pump fail at 35K miles and it made a screeching noise. Luckily, the timing didn't get fubarred.

After listening with the hood up while the wife goosed it while in gear I'm now thinking it's the turbocharger.

I was going to clean the manifold today so I'm going to proceed and check the TC while I'm at it.

So, it seems that when I had the EGR valve out to fix a leak at the manifold joint last weekend I didn't get the gasket at the cooler in right. Bottom hole was outside the flange. Spotted it when I had the TC inlet off.

I guess that piece of gasket hanging out there was vibrating like a clarinet reed when the exhaust pressure was high. Guess I should have driven it after I finished.

Big embarrassment. Bigger relief.
