I'm in the market for new tires.
I'm looking to go down to PA or NY to shop for the best deal.

id say discounttiredirect , tire-easy , great prices.
just use your size and do a search on both of them vs local shops.
anything in NY and PA in the shops will be much more expensive.

www.tirerack.com is where I've gotten all mine from. Great prices and they have a test track with a fleet of vehicles they do independent testing with to help give more information about what they sell. For most tire models you can read dozens of reviews from people who have bought them (some of which may even own a Jetta). Of course depending on where you live you'll have to get them shipped and installed at a local shop.

In your areas, if I were buying a tire to work for all the weather conditions you encounter, I'd go with Nokian WRG2. They are not cheap, but tires are one of those things you can't skimp on.

Mich Primacy MXV4's - not on my JSW - at just under 70,000 miles measure 6-7 32 per tread depth gauge. They are - however - a tad pricey.

We had these on my wife's Ford Freestyle (car now gone!) several years ago. They seemed to wear out prematurely, but this was a large heavy AWD car. For the money, I'd choose a Michelin over Bridgestone's premier Serenity line.

As for the Jetta, I've had three different sets of tires on my JSW
1. OEM Continental ProContact - not impressed

2. Continental ExtremeContact DWS - best overall, would buy again, but replaced at 40K due to broken belts. *very good in snow*

3. Yokohama YK580 - at 40K now with 7/32nds still remaining, not the best wet traction. Would be scary in the snow.

The swooping tread pattern on the DWS's and the YK580's seem to become a noise factor as the tire wears more. For this reason, I'd like to give the Michelin's a try, but $$ play a role. I may go back to the DWS's on my next set if I can't afford the MXV4's when the time comes.

Michelin Defenders bought from BJ's for $549.96 plus 6.25% Mass Sales Tax. Installed, new valve stems, balanced, road hazard and old tires disposed of. Lifetime tire rotation, balance and flat repair. They have a 90K mile tread life guarantee too. :):)

List of good All Season Tires for Jettas (IMO)

I've been buying my tires online for about 20yrs. I've tried 5 different companies, but got the best service & delivery from the Tire Rack and Tread Depot. I've got an engineering & LE background, my hobbies are cars, guns & knives. Living in GA, I only buy All Season tires (we usually get a little snow/ice each year). I look for good brands with at least a high 400's tread rating, preferable 500+, and have good grip & reviews. I do not like directional tires (designed to roll 1 way). They can only be rotated from front to back keeping them on the same side, which causes them to get loud. Reversing the direction tires roll cause the leading edges of the tread blocks to wear evenly. I like asymmetric designs best which have an outside edge, but they can be properly rotated fr. to back and diagonal. Note: I do not like or buy Goodyear tires. I've went through several sets on my patrol & detective cars. (Eagle RSA, Eagle LS, Eagle LS2, Integrity) They all performed poorly compared to tires I buy, wore out quickly, did not ride well and were horrible in the rain. I did get a new patrol car a couple years ago which came from the factory with Pirelli P6 four seasons. They were night & day the best patrol car tires I had ever drove. Excellent ride, grip wet & dry, and no hydroplaning. I was sad when our shop replaced them with Eagle RSAs. (They only let us put a max of 15k on a set)
Here are my picks. I recently put a set of the Cooper Zeon RS3A's on my son's old E Class and can't believe how good they are. I researched them more, amazing tires for money with 500aa rating. Super grippy wet or dry with nice damped ride. I had never bought Cooper's before, might put on wife's Jetta Tdi.I've had very good luck with all brands below, hope this list helps some of you.

Low price:
Kuhmo: Sense $66, new but getting good reviews
Toyo: Extensa AS $73

Medium priced:
Kuhmo: Ecsta 4X or LX Platinum
Cooper: Zeon RS3A
Continental: Pure Contact, or Pro Contact Ecoplus
Pirelli: P6 Allseason Plus
Toyo: Proxes 4 Plus, Versado LX2

High End:
Continental: Extreme Contact DWS
Pirelli: P7 Cinturato All season Plus
Michelin: Pilot Sport AS3, or Primacy MXV4

We continue to receive $50 Off Set-Of-Four tire coupons from our VW Dealer, so I decided to stop by and see if they were competitive. NOT. Even with the coupon the VW Dealer was $80 above my usual local tire store for the same tires.

The Dealer experience was also rather strange. Employee A quoted me on the tires. When I asked if the price included mounting, balancing and valve stems, he said "No" and said I'd need to walk down the hall and get a quote on that portion of the purchase from Employee B! I was rather stunned at such a stupid arrangement and kindly said so.

Oh, by the way, Michelin offers a $70 Rebate offer on four tires several times a year in the U.S.. Keep an eye on their website for information. Not all tire dealers qualify.

I changed from Continental DWS to Michelin Pilot Sport AS 3s. The Continentals were good and I got 70K miles out of them, but the Michelins are better at most everything except possibly snow traction where, I believe, they're come in a close second. The Michelins ride "softer", but have better lateral and forward traction IMO.

If interested in the Michelins, you can get them for about $100 ea. Just go to here and copy/paste the current pricing:

http://www.discountedwheelwarehouse.com/Michelin_Pilot_Sport_Tires.cfm?pn=Mich-36019&pID=52904

Then go to Discount Tire Direct and have them price match. Discount Tire Direct does not charge for shipping, and will give you a "web only" $25 off of the enter deal. So for 4 tires shipped to you, it would be (as of today's pricing) about $94.77 per tire, or a savings of about $112 for a set of 4. Add about $100 for mounting and balancing.

I need a new set of tires too. The OEM Bridgestones are about done, getting louder on the interstate and tread is worn. Anyone know of a promotion for Michelins or Pirelli's? Looking for a gift card promotion or free installation? I usually get my tires from Sam's but they don't have any incentives right now.

SAMs dose the michelin promotion 3 to 4 times a year. If you call them they might tell you when the next one is going to be.

I went with a set of Firestone Firehawk Wide Ovals. My uncle is a Bridgestone/Firestone dealer and got them for $300 a set of 4, out the door. I'd imagine they go for about $400 for non-family :D

Most tire manufacturers do promotions in the summer... because, let's face it, you NEED tires in the winter. I run on slicks in the summer :p
