Hey All,

Need some help to solve an issue I’m having with my 2013 Passat TDI with 183,000 miles on it. I’ve had zero issues with the car besides the heater core. Never missed an oil change and did the DSG at 75k and 150k. The car is still driving great and want to keep it as long as I can but can’t afford dumping more money into the car than the car is worth. Here is the background to what’s currently happening.

My check engine light came on a few months ago. When I got it read at the time, the only code that was coming up was P026A Code- Charge Air Cooler Low Efficiency. I brought it to my mechanic, and he mentioned that this may be covered by the diesel recall extended warranty. I brought it to VW to learn that I was outside of the warranty due to my miles. I was planning on bringing it back to my mechanic right away but got caught up with life and couldn’t bring it in right away.

Several months later, I got a “Check Coolant Level” warning when I started my car in the morning. The coolant was low if not empty in the reservoir. I had left over coolant from when I flushed my heater core last, so I filled it back up. When I had the hood popped, I noticed oil on the top and front engine (see pictures in link https://forums.tdiclub.com/index.php?media/albums/2013-passat-tdi-oil-on-engine.14428/ ). I brought it back to the mechanic to have him check about the oil leak, possible coolant leak and the original P026A code. When he plugged the car to his reader, he got the following faults:

Engine Electronics:
  • 5552 (P01110): Intake Air Temperature Sensor 1 Bank 1. Circuit Range Performance Static
  • 15733 (P20EE00): SCR NOx Catalyst Efficiency Below Threshold Bank 1
  • 12642 (P026A00): Charge Air Cooler Efficiency Below Threshold Sporadic
  • 8863 (P245900): Diesel Particulate Filter Regeneration Frequency Sporadic
  • 4814 (P056200): System Voltage. Low Voltage Sporadic
  • 13011 (P00AF00): Turbocharger/Supercharger Boost Control ‘A’ Module. Performance Sporadic
  • 18637 (P220100): NOx Sensor Circuit Range/Performance Bank 1 Sensor 1 Sporadic
  • 17262 (U140A00): Terminal 30. Open Circuit Sporadic
  • 4629 (P068A00): ECM/PCM Power Relay De Energized Performance Too Early Sporadic

My mechanic (German Auto Works in Rockville, MD) was unsure where to start since there were so many that he called VW for some advice. They came back and told him that he would need to replace the Turbo, DPF, CAT, NOx Sensor to start with. He basically told me he can fix it, but it would be an unknown amount to fix it completely with everything going on. He said we can fix it or if the cars still driving well, drive it into the ground.

Now a month later, I’m getting the “Oil Pressure: Engine Off! Owner’s Manual!” warning. It has happened 3 times now the past few days when driving less then 5 miles. With this type of warning, I know it won’t be long until the car is done unless I do something.

I know there is a lot going on but I’m hoping for some insight into what people might think it is, suggestions what I can do to extend the life of the car even if its short term. With the Coolant Leak, do you think it might be getting into the engine and clogging up the filter and burning out the pump? Would an engine flush, new oil filter and investigate if the oil pump is working a good starting point?

Thanks for the help all.

The low voltage code may be a clue - low voltage (e.g., bad battery or alternator) can lead to all kinds of mischievous and phony fault codes. The coolant leak may be the oil cooler housing failed - look there for signs of coolant. (lots of posts on that common problem here). There is extensive discussion here on the P026A code - could be a fouled intercooler, or bad sensor at the top of the intercooler. Start by cleaning both and clearing the codes. Don't just rush in to get a new turbo, DPF, CAT, NOx sensor etc. until proper diagnostics have been performed by someone very familiar with this engine.

Thanks Tom for the reply. I’ve seen some of the threads about the intercooler cleaning that you’ve been in as well. I’m planning on cleaning the intercooler, flushing the engine with cleaner and then replacing the oil and oil filter. I’ll also look at the oil cooler to see if there is any signs of coolant and will report my finding.

I agree about the low voltage causing some of the codes. I’ve exchanged messages with Ninedee (local trusted mechanic on this forum) and he said the same thing. I replaced the battery last year so maybe poor connection but will test the battery as well. I’m going to clear the codes and see if they come back.

Hi all,
Quick update. Flushed the intercooler last weekend. I took out the MAPS sensor at the top of the Intercooler, removed the bottom hose from the intercooler and jimmy rigged a plugged. Using a small funnel and hose, I used mineral spirits and let it sit inside the intercooler for about 10 mins. I also cleaned the MAPS sensor with MAF sensor cleaner while it was free.

As expected, the mineral spirts came out completely black. Flushed it second time for maybe about 5 mins (the plugged failed and the mineral spirts drained out) and it seemed clear but hard to say for sure.

When I was disposing of the mineral spirts, there was some clumps of maybe oil build up that looked like it was caked onto the fins of the intercooler. See pics here (https://forums.tdiclub.com/index.php?media/intercooler-flush-2-jpg.158568/). I cleared the codes a few days later and after about 95 miles, the check engine light came back on. I'm going to get the codes read again.

If the P026A, P0111 and the P0101 codes came back, what do you think the next step should be? Should I be inspecting and cleaning the MAP, MAF and the IAT sensors next?

The oil pressure warning hasn't happened since those first two days it happened. Also don't think the coolant is getting in anywhere. I think I have a small hose leak near the firewall which I will deal with later.

Thanks for the help

I just changed my intercooler because of p026a. Fixed the issue I tried flushing only worked for a week or so.

So the following codes are still present
P0101 Mass Air Flow Sensor (G70) Implausible signal
P0111 Intake Air Temp Sensor (G42) Implausible signal
P026A Charge Air Cooler, Efficiency Below Threshold

Should I start looking at replacing the MAP and cleaning the other sensors?

any recommendations on next steps? I’m trying to get these check engine lights off so I can sell it back toVW or another dealership so want to invest as little as possible.

I would check the sensor or the wiring on it. My wires sat on the oil cooler exchanger 😬 I zip tie it away from it as the plastic shielding was melted and didn't want the wires getting destroyed.
