Need help...found this part..don\'t know what it is

I found this part when I dropped the plastic cover to do an oil change. Can someone tell me what it is and where it goes? Seems like a bushing for something. Looked all around and can't determine where it goes.

It is soft rubber. Car is a 2002 New Beetle TDI.

Hmm could this be the rear bushing from the engine cover? There is a bolt in the back of the cover. I cannot remember if there was a rubber bushing there or not. Have had the cover off for a while. Small side up or down? Anyone know if this could be it?

Yuck...Delvac on the keyboard.

It looks like a bump stop for a shock or strut. How big is it?

All three of the bolts holding the engine cover on have a rubber bushing, but I don't think what you found is one of those. The engine cover bushings (i think) are equal diameter top and bottom. What you found has a larger top (bottom?) diameter. But a check of your three engine cover bolts will tell you if they are all there. (sorry to state the obvious).

Could it be left over from some other work that was done? That is any extra old piece that fell down into the engine bay and was just left there? It isn't one of the rubber bumpers attached to the under side of the hood? (i don't think so...but....)

u4ea, that does look like it may be the grommet that the cover slips into at the back. Since you have a NB, the cover just slips into a grommet at the back. Jettas and Golfs have a 3 mounting points like the NBs other two mounting mounting points. The part number would be 038 103 638 C.

I don't know, but I got a private message from this guy regarding the computer as well... I'm a bit confused.

DUDE!! That is the front bushing that aligns the kniferator with the dingamabob. Make sure that you get that assembly back together fast or else your dohickey will shatter and allow the whatzapart to fall off while you're driving. That happened to me once and the loose part hit another driver's car and dammaged his flux capacitor. I had to pay for my repairs as well as the other driver's car too.

I will look at the airbox tonight. I am thinking it is the engine cover bushing though. Seems to slip right in. Thanks for all the help.
