Need help. Difficult problem to diagnose...

This one stumped my mechanic.

I have a 99 Jetta TDI with 66k miles.

Last Saturday, I drove the vehicle for about four miles and pulled into a gas station. When I came out of the store, my car would not start. It would turn over, but not start. My glowplug light would not come on. All lights and blinkers worked. I waited for about three minutes, and the car started.

I pulled out of the lot and my car immediately died, as if I ran out of fuel. I had the car towed to my mechanic after that. He hooked it up to the computer, and nothing showed up. He tested my alternator an battery an looked at my fuel filter. Still, nothing.

He drove it for three days and nothing happend.

I took the car home and it broke down five days later(today). I was driving about 45mph, and the engine shuddered and the car heaved and then shut off. It would not start after this, even after waiting a few minutes.

Am I a victim of quintessential VW electrical problems? I thought it was the fuel filter, but that turned out ok.

One more thing, three times in one week, while I was doing 80mph on the freeway, the car shuttered for about a half second(the engine seemd to quit) and my glow plug light came on, and then everything was fine. I'm thinking this is a clue to the problem.

I'd appreciate any help on this. My mechanic is an idiot. He can't fix anything that the computer doesn't give him a code for.

Thanks!

edit: Part No. is 1J0-906-381-A. 'Bout $20 from the dealer or $17 from Impex

My vote is for the relay 109 as well...I had the same problem 3,000 miles ago switched it out for a new one and whala everything has been fine every since.
