Need help attaching photos to post

Can anyone offer advice how to attach jpeg photos to a post from a Mac?
When I hit the insert image button and. type in the path to the file, in this format
“/Users/myaccount/foldername/filename”
I always get a message saying “Something went wrong. Please try again or contact the administrator."

You need to upload it to a photo hosting site, then copy the link to here in the photo link button
