There happens to be a guru in Birmingham, AL, which is 90 miles north of Montgomery, AL.....much better than all the way back here to Charleston (around 450 miles away from Montgomery). I called the guru listed for SC and had a VERY nice and detailed conversation with the mechanic there. Based on that conversation, we're not quite ready to pass the buck on to ourselves. Bottom line though, if we do end up having to do a turbo as well as the TB job on our own, we will go to a guru!!!
All the best,
Nicole, Thankful Newbie and Aspiring TDI Expert ;o)

Nicole,
You keep right on asking questions. One question will most always lead to more, and the more you ask the smarter you will get. Sometimes folks may forget how it is to be a newbie, but for the most part you'll get the most patient instructors you could ever hope to find.
Cheers!

I'm in the Birmingham, AL area, and I've used the following "guru" for the maintenance work on my Jetta.

http://www.hutchvw.com/

The shop's owner is Jimmy Hutchinson, and he's a pretty nice guy.

You may want to give that shop a try.

The mechanic I know of is in Northern Alabama, in Athens, you would likely be better off going to one of the B'ham gurus. Athens is another 90 to 100 miles north of B'ham so towing will kill you.

Thanks y'all! I called Jim in B'ham. He's deciferring the estimate I was given by the VW dealer. At first, he wasn't too sure if he could do any better for us, being that he orders his parts straight from the VW dealer, until I gave him the $3100 quote. FYI, he won't use parts brough in by customers, so no used turbos and no "self-order-off-the-web" turbos...

can't blame him for not using used parts but most mechanics will use new customers parts but they will make a note of it in the paperwork absolving them from any warranty obligation.

After a weeks worth of debates with an un-named VW stealership in AL, we are moving (literally, on a flat-bed trailer being pulled by my father-in-law's Chevy) our Golf to Eagle Imports in Auburn, AL (334-821-9900). They've been VERY helpful over the phone, and we can't wait to work with them in person!!! Hutchinson in Birmingham was not only too far away, but they're way too busy for us right now, which may lead creadance to why they're listed as gurus here. Wish us success with Eagle Imports, perhaps a future addition to the guru sticky.....
