I have owned too many VW's recently, worked for AUDI for a short while, and all I know, they are not for me anymore.

I have an MK4 TDI Golf, MK6 Golf R and a 2012 GLK350 I want to sell/trade for one GOOD car/suv that is diesel (safe family vehicle), that I can say is worth the trades, lost money, and best investment. No vehicle has remotely given me a warm and fuzzy :/

Want room, fuel efficiency, towing cabability, and great reliability/quality.

Any suggestions?

BMW diesels should be available to test drive soon. 328d comes in RWD or AWD sedan or AWD wagon. 535d comes in RWD or AWD sedan.

Not sure about towing though.

I am not aware of any vehicle sold in the US that will offer all of that. Item 4 - "great reliability/quality" - is probably the hardest to achieve.

I have a 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee CRD that I am very fond of.
Room = debatable
Fuel efficiency = best in class (still nothing compared to the TDI)
Towing capability = unsurpassed

reliability/quality = hey whadaya mean? It's a JEEP!

I would recommend looking at the 2014 model when the Eco Diesel becomes available later this year.

There are just too many to list....
Man, I hope the day I say Volkswagen's aren't for me anymore is the day I get euthanized and shoved into an oven. Don't think I'd want to make to that day's tomorrow.

I hear 'ya. I'm slowly getting away from VW too. That's part of why I pulled the trigger and ordered a loaded 2014 BMW 535d xDrive M-Sport sedan as soon as the opportunity to order presented itself. Good thing I jumped on it when I did because my BMW dealer (Tulley's in Nashua NH) was allocated only ONE of these for who knows how long and they have had a number of people asking about the new d models. My order went in less than 24 hours after the new d models became orderable on BMW's website.

I also like the 328d xDrive wagon.

Don't forget the new Mazda 6 Skyactive D, which should be available in the fall. Just as with the BMWs, though, the towing capability of that car probably won't be anything stellar.

Those sound like familiar desires in a next car. Since the addition of my daughter to the family, I have had to alter my plans for another vehicle. I want to get something that will meet the needs of my family and myself for 8-10 years which will mean carrying between 3-5 people and 1-2 dogs, reasonable cargo room, and the ability to tow a project car or boat so around 4000 lbs. I love diesels and think the Jeep Grand Cherokee that's coming this fall should fit that bill nicely other than the accompanying $54k pricetag for the Overland as I'd order it. The Ram 1500 Diesel may be a consideration as well although the maneuverability decreases.

But if "great reliability/quality" trumps the other factors, I'd say that's easiest to find by abandoning diesel. I just don't have the time to deal with having to drop off cars at dealers or have to spend time wrenching or running diagnostics myself at this point, so that's probably how I will compromise. Price of entry is hard to justify when it's $15k+ more than another acceptable solution. I'm actually looking at the upcoming '14 Toyota Highlander as a consideration among several others.

Besides the aforementioned two, I'd say the GLK250 Bluetec, BMW X5d, or waiting until more come along are the only diesel options. I cannot imagine the Mazda 6 or any sedan/wagon (E250 Bluetec, a thought too) will have a tow rating over 1000 lbs.

Let us know what you decide and how the experience away from VWAG goes.

Almost all of the post hit home directly, minus oil hammer.

Tired of wrenching, diagnosising, special tools, and most importantly. .. Lack of time

I think Diesel is going to be sacrificed as well, since the savings doesn't seem worthwhile as it once did.

So, it is time for a new book. Leasing may be the main topic, lol.

I was kinda similar, but decided that I couldn't get that in just one vehicle. I have space at my house, so I bought a four door pickup. Not saying it's what you need, but I finally decided that I drove enough to warrant a commuter car (which arguably the TDi is) and something else, which is allowed to be more expensive on the fuel front.

I'm not really good at wrenching on vehicles but I figured I can now do some of it on my own, since the pressure is off to get a repair done so I can get to work.
