How hot is the coolant when it's warmed up?

The gauge in the dash is not very accurate...

The thermostat is the most likely candidate.

I just cured this same situation by replacing the thermostat. The temp ran 190 (on the dash gauge) during warm weather, but barely made it halfway there during anything around 50 or less. It is great to have heat back in the car during these cool mornings.

Just scan it, confirm that the coolant temperature is low, and replace the thermostat.

The temp gauge is heavily buffered to prevent the driver from seeing the normal fluctuations in temperature while driving. If the needle is not straight up in 190 after a normal warmup period, then you have problems, most likely the thermostat stuck open.

In SC, sounds almost certain to be a faulty thermostadt. Agree to get it on VAG and see what it's really doing. Forget the gauge till you do.

There are just too many to list....
Fix your car, you have either a bad coolant temp sensor (VERY common) and it is a dual circuit type. One circuit goes to the engine controller, the other goes to the instrument cluster. Either side can fail independently.

After about 100k miles, though, I can guarantee you the thermostat is not working as well as it did when new. But when they get really bad, the ECU will flag a DTC for that. But only if the CTS is working properly.

On the BHW, the CTS is in a real booger of a spot. :p

If you can swap it out quickly. It is held in place with a horseshoe clip.

Remove the clip, wiggle the old sensor out, make sure that the old o-ring came with it, wiggle new sensor (with o-ring) into housing, install new clip.

It can be done, but as above - it's in a booger of a spot.
