I'm about to replace a turbo on a 2000 NB.
From looking things over I am assuming that the best way to drop this turbop is to disconnect the R/H (passengerside) drive-shaft from the tranny. Then remove the turbo.
This same engine is in desperate need of an intake cleaning (147K miles). I'll be removing the intake too.

My question is: If the NB intake is removed can the turbo be removed from the top? I would perfer not opening the CV joint if I can avoid it.

TIA
Herm

Re: NB Turbo Info request

Go from the top, Herm. That black tray at the base of the windshield comes off pretty easily with just removal of wipers, removing the bracket for the N75, a few nuts/bolts to undo, etc. It's easier done than written. Once removed, you've got at least as much room as the Golf/Jetta.

Re: NB Turbo Info request

NB Turbo Info request

Herm,
I just wrote up a turbo removal procedure for posting on the TDI site, which was emailed to Ken Schreiber yesterday for his review. I would expect it to be posted on the site this next week.

I have had my turbo out four time for various work. It is really fixed now. The job can be accomplished from above or below. If from below, no need to remove the driveshaft or exhaust manifold. If from above, you must remove the intake manifold. Since the car needs the intake cleaned anyway, sounds like the best way if from the top.

If you would like to review the turbo removal procedure, I will email you a copy. Just send me an email.

The NB turbo is out (from above). Thanks for the info. I was conserned about seperating a CV joint that has well over 100K miles. Though the joint in not having a know problem at this time I just don't want to tempt fate.
You never really know what you will find on such a unti that has such high miles on it untill you open it up...which is what I wanted to avoide.

The oil supply line was a loss. There was no way to remove the oil supply line with out damage.
This car has been driven 3 Maine winters without a belly pan. Many of the fasteners are badly corroded and the oil supply-line B-nut was no different. This B-nut was compleately seized to the line/union fitting.

I used a tubing cutter to cut the tube. Once the turbo was removed I still had a beast of a time removing the oil line.

My advice is have this line on-hand for a turbo replacement ...just order the line at the same time you order the turbo. It can be returned if its not needed.
Now I have a minimum 2 day down time awaiting the line.

As a side note: This intake manifold was clogged down to the size of a nickel diameter.

Wait....let me get this straight......the guy was a "vendor" and he had an immense fear of.....of.....of......of......dealing with a CV joint?

Wow.
