Out of TDI's
I haven't been here for a while (fresh out of TDI's), but reading Bus's experiences on his B5 reminded me of the years when I had two, yes TWO of these fine cars. I did everything he is doing and then some. I actually got so proficient at changing torn axle boots I could do it in 1 hour, round trip! LOL!

If you have the dreaded chain BSM, get rid of it! And thank God it didn't take out your engine already.

continuing on my journey, the car started acting up again.

it started going into limp if i pushed it hard up a steep highway grade that i frequent. no biggie i thought, trans is old, just dont push it so hard. that worked for a while until it started coming out of lock, just like it did before TC replacement. i'm suspecting that the valve body pressure regulator is not doing its job and preventing the TC from locking fully? or the cam is fubar, or both? average fuel economy is +/- 30mpg.

i can keep it locked if i downshift on the grade and am easy on the gas. MIL is now on and here is the scan i just did:

have never seen the airbag code, but i killed the battery and had to jump it. i also had a rear caliper start leaking around the ebrake pivot so i've replaced that and bled the brakes. still fighting an EGR code i see as well. cleared all the codes and i'll see what comes back after some more miles.

i pulled the valve cover and took a look at what i could see of the cam. some bluing of the rocker rollers and some wear on the tips of the I/E lobe tips. looks like i'm in for a cam when it's TB time along with the addressing the BSM. $$$.

would really like to get the trans acting normal enough to limp it along through the needed repairs and maintenance and time it will take to save for the trans replacement in the more distant future (if that's possible).

any suggestions on what to look for and/or log in VCDS for a more accurate diagnosis will be much appreciated and followed up on as quickly as i can.

I don't remember how long you've had the tc, but first thing I'd do is call Eriksson. Its the first time I've heard of one or theirs failing.

Have you pulled the EGR valve and seen if it is clogged? At 150,000 miles I imagine its in need of a good cleaning if it has not been cleaned before.

i've had the TC for about 6 months. it was supplied by Precision of New Hampton. contacting both them and Erickson is on my to-do list regarding my lack of pressure theory.

i pulled the EGR and cleaned it pretty early on in my ownership. it was filthy and continued to throw a code (irregularly) even after being cleaned. i've pulled it out, tested it and it seems to function normally, but it's got me thinking now: could i be dealing with a clogged intake and/or EGR cooler?

the trans itself seems to function pretty well. it does not delay or engage harshly when shifting from P to R/D. it is a little clunky on shifts sometimes, but it has some miles on it. one weird thing it does is it takes a second or two to lock up in third & fourth gear under certain loads. the RPMs drop considerably, almost like a "ghost shift". it has done this through the entirety of my ownership even with the new TC. i have completely changed the ATF twice and the filter once and refilled it properly with ATF-1 and Max Life, respectively.

it will puff a small amount of white smoke when cold started but starts smooth since adjusting the timing which is @ 0-.5. i did notice it throwing some smoke once when pushing it up the steepest part of the 6% grade while the TC was out of lock.

thanks for the insight and keep it coming!
i am trying to provide all the pertinent info i can :)

I hate to say this. But that usually means a new torque converter will fix this. I think you have another bad converter.

It is acting like a boost leak, but with no code for boost, must not be.

Regarding "but it's got me thinking now: could i be dealing with a clogged intake and/or EGR cooler?"
When you pull the EGR valve you are looking directly into the intake. A coating of carbon on the walls of the intake is normal for the BHW; the intake in the BHW does not normally clog up bad like the older 2000 era engines like in my 2002 Jetta SW tdi (intake needed cleaning at 50,000 miles).

As far as a clogged EGR cooler, i don't know, only way to know for sure is to remove and inspect it.

A puff at white smoke at cold start is nothing to get worried about. Mine does that but otherwise runs great and burns no oil. I usually just turn the key to start down to 32 degrees F and don't wait for glow plug light to go off - seeing unburned fuel smoke as a result.

i am aware of this but am not blaming the TC.
if the newly installed TC is has failed then something else is causing it.

I seem to remember my Eriksson recomendation to you as the only ones that have zero problems. This time you might consider taking that advice. Maybe someone here has sent them some cores in the meantime. The converter you installed has failed and only fix is to replace it. Again, best not drive it till you do as you risk damage to the trans doing so and then the cost will be much higher.

A fresh core, not one thats been tampered with is best for a successful rebuild so you could send them your original one.

so, i guess this is where this journey ends for me.
i was rear-ended last night traveling home from a weekend of camping.
i am essentially unharmed, but the same cannot be said of my car and dog who are both dead as a result of the accident ?

as if it could be worse (it could have been), i had just had the BSM delete and a new cam installed days prior to the accident.
any help or opinions are welcomed as to how i might obtain the highest total value for the car.
150k BHW with (Cascade German supplied) BSM delete, BEW gear and BEW cam for sale!

thanks for looking and i have a funny feeling that i may be hanging around another part of these forums in the not-so-distant future.

Glad to hear you are essentially unharmed, but sorry to hear about your dog. They are family members, so that is tough. Cars are replaceable. Good luck with replacement car, and hang in there.

so the insurance co. has the car and now the valuation process begins. i have a bunch of receipts for parts (some of which are still in my garage) and labor that i had invested in the car.

just did the BSM, TB and new cam so i may consider buying the car back to sell the (low mile) engine on.

thinking about replacement ideas, the A platform might be more my size now and also more readily available. any suggestions? would consider another B5 wagon if the right one was out there too. definitely wanting another diesel though!

missing those torques....and my boy

hey all.

just thought you might like to know that i have purchased the salvage rights to the car and will have a short time to part it out. i will need ths wheels and tires for my new JSW and also the rack cross bars. BHW with less than 150k and literally 200 miles on new BEW cam, TB and BSM delete available! will post in the classified section as time allows.

thank you, DV :)

your thread was helpful to me in that i gave the link to my insurance adjuster along with my receipts for repairs & maintenance. i was in turn, offered a more than fair sum for the car.

i felt and do feel a lot for THE CHIEF BOY. i do plan on filing a claim with the rear-end driver's insurance and going after them (legally) for killing my dog.
