So I went out on a limb and ingored the doom and gloom of HPFP and DPF failures and just bought the car of my dreams (so to speak).
While it wan't the perfect color (I was looking more for a white or silver car) it came in very close "United gray metallic". and it filled all the check boxes that got me to break out the check book.
-more head and legroom then my '06 accord (I'm tall, can't help it)
-better then 40mpg hwy
-NOT red or black
-hatch back
-sporty ride while still comfy for long highway runs

The surprising bits that I got as a bonus:
-xenon headlights throw a beam that I can EASILY see 1/4 mile ahead of me. Seariously the BEST headlights I've ever seen on a car!
-Dynaudio sound. Its really good for a stock system... But I'm too picky and can already see that it might be upgraded down the road. We'll see ;)
-Didn't realize that a car can be this sporty yet at the same time be so comfy to drive!

Even with my crappy commute and backups every other day it looks like I'm going to get well over 40mpg for my first tank of fuel. As of tonight I have 500 miles and I'm just above the "9o'clock" mark on the fuel gauge.

Just installed some weather tech mats front and rear and they fit like a glove!

Dealer pics (haven't had the time to take pix since I've been so busy at work lately):

Cool color, now you need some black wheels and coilovers...:D
I donno about the black wheels. I was looking more at something like this if anything at all.
Maybe a OE GTI suspention, Billstines with H&R or KW coilovers.

Far as mods go I think the only ones that I'm likely to get in the near future are a skidplate and winter front.

since it has 30k on the clock I will need to pay the dealer or a local TDi shop a visit to ensure that all is up to snuff with the car.

It was Saturday, October 15, 2011. I'm surprised that you weren't included in the notice.

Oh I got roughly 42MPG for my first tank with about 25% city/backup driving. And I was NOT trying to get good mpg's I was enjoying the little snail under the hood quite a bit :D

I'm still very impressed at how much go juice this car has and how I do NOT need to rev it at all! Keeping it between 1700 and 2500 is the sweet spot for sure!

3 month report...

So far so good guys!
-I've been averaging 42mpg over the daily grind.
-zero buyers remorse (other then the sound system in my old car that I miss a little)
-Windows tinted to smoked 35%.
-Got the 30k service done with the local VW dealer since I wasn't 100% sure about the service work done at the fiat dealer I bought my car used from. And heck who can argue with free? :D
-replaced all four tires with V Rated Conti PureContacts due to screw in tire. Jury is still out on MPG with the new tires as I'm still waiting to fill up again.
What does the future hold? stay tuned to find out

Nice little car, love the color. Too bad no leatherette interior though. But then, you probably realize that!

Thanks!
Having driven a Jetta with the leatherette seats I actually prefer the cloth over those seats. Also helps that the Golf has better side bolsters for sporty driving :D
I approve of this thread and the direction it took. :D
PS like the car, too!
Seems to only get better. Every day I look forward to driving the car. No other car I've had so far seemed give me that feeling for so long
Very nice! I'm a little biased though! :)

Wanted to toss up a quick update here...
Picked up the complete interior LED kit from deautokey. They did a great job of packing the lights and the lights themselves are excellent quality!
Shameless plug:

Early in 2014 I had a minor episode of the infamous "hard start" so I did some digging and found that IDParts made a winter grill kit. This kit does two things very well. It seems to keep condensation from happening on very cold days and also helps the car warm up faster and stay warmed up.

Winter mode:

I should add that the bottom cover goes on at temps below 45F and the top cover only goes on when temps are below 25F.

The grill cover kit does look clean. I wish I had bought a 4 door myself. So much better visibility out of the car for changing lanes, parallel parking and backing up, and so much easier to get in and out of. I couldn't find one with the hid headlights, manual, and the sunroof though, so I ended up with my white 2 dr. The 4 door also does not have the annoying wind noise problems of the 2dr. (which I have mostly fixed by adding weatherstripping, bending the door frames, and adjusting the doors)

I also have the weathertech digital fit mats. They say you can knock over a full beer, no problem! Juuust kidding. I'm one of the few where I live who doesn't "booze cruise". With a low of -18 out tonight in south dakota, I can't really blame them though!

I recommend the dieselgeek short shift kit, it is how the car should have come from the factory in my opinion. Just be extra careful with those tiny bolts on the part that clamps onto the cable. I still need to get their skid plate setup too, I don't know why I've put that off for so long.

I like the looks of that ID cover. I'll be interested to hear what it does for your mileage in cold weather. Got a miserable 36 mpg on my 8 mile commute this morning (15 degrees, 2 degrees with windchill). I get 45 to 46 on the same drive in warm weather. It is taking more than half the drive just for the car to warm up.

I've been looking at the short shifter kit from diesel geek for a bit and may end up getting that come spring time. I'll probably also get the skid plate then as well.

You are correct! Idparts.com supplied :)
Warm temp I typically get between 41 & 43mpg.
I've been using the grill blocks since the start of cold weather this year and haven't seen much drop in mpg. My average so far this season is around 41 mpg

Very nice ride, whether you like it or not, excellent choice in color :)
It has grown on me!

I recently did a full exterior detail. Well as much as I can do by hand...
Wash, clay bar, Maguires cleaner wax & Maguires "black wax/polish".

Looks GREAT now
