Finally after 5 years of owning this car I finally broke 1000k on a tank.
I think it may have just been broken in after 301,000k:D , seriously can't figure it out, but still amazing for a 8 yr old car and the dreaded 01M(on goes the flame suit) I know I can get more if I had a 5 speed,I do it's just in the base ment not the car  .
Works out to 5.7l/100k or 40.5 USMPG

Anyhow I'm quite pleased.

Well done. Especially since its an auto.

How far after the fuel light did you drive it?

966 km VAG-COM showed 7l still available, didn't want to push it any further.

Light came on at 966kms?

If so, you could have done another 100kms from there to 1060ish........

I've driven many km's after the light came on. I usually try for another 60-80km after the needle bottoms out. I have never run out of fuel doing this for over 4+ years and almost every tank year round.
Best tank this year to date 1274km
Best tank last year and all time 1388km

My first ever 1000+ tank was this winter. Much of it was snowstorm driving, actually. I was driving my mom back from the hospital in North Bay (dad crashed his van) and pushed around 120km in a snowstorm from the warning. Good times! haha.

My second was 1028km, a pretty good mix of city/hwy driving, etc. Third was 1054km, my last fuel up (and I thought it was going to be a bad tank at about 1/2 way).

Half way through this tank I hammer modded to stop shuddering, and then advancing the timing after reading through some of the extremely long "Verified! 3-4mpg increase" thread. I'm at 840km at 2 dots under half way. Should be good!

I went 220 kms on the fuel light once...lol that was nerve racking.
Holy crap!!!! And here I was on edge last week driving 70 kms on the fuel light. I was terrified I was going to run out of fuel! I hit 1080 total km on the tank though, my first over 1000(!!!!) (got the car just before Christmas).

Auto or manual, this thread was supposed to be about the 01M that everyone hacks on, I'm just trying to give it a little respect. :)

Speaking of...how big is our fuel tank? I always thought it's 60 l. After running about 70 k after the light came on, I was able to fit 62 liters (vented).

Huh. Today I put 90km on after the light came on, and only managed 58.9 liters.

My first 700+ mile tank! 1208km! I am hoping the hammer mod and timing advance give me more tanks like this.

think the manual says 57L.. or something like that. but they assume you're not venting

why are they so against topping off the tank anyway.. they have warnings on the cap, and in the manual... "do not top off". why not? silly geese.

Most the warnings about topping off is gas car related....they use the same tanks as a gas car. Gas expands alot more then diesel..ive been vented for over 100,000kms its not an issue

my tank is 40L topped up, and I get 860km or so with a mix of hwy and city driving. 60% hwy and 40% city.

what can I expect with a vent?

it is a 2001 Gls tdi manual.

If my numbers are crap, what can I do to improve them? All is stock except for the vr6 clutch/flywheel upgrade.

I have a set of PP520's prepaid and still waiting to be shipped. ( 2 months now, I dunno what's up the BleachedBora ).
I'm sure this will make economy a bit worse but hopefully not by much.
I guess I will need a tune at some point after I get them, and prob. a hammer mod/advance.

any other suggestions or input about my milage is welcomed.

Sorry if I am hijacking jay!

Your looking at getting another 20 liters in with a vent..if your only getting 40 in now. Im getting about 58-60lts in my car. That mileage is good when you get vented ill be able to tell you better.

no, prob... just askin...

I went to Guelph and bought my first car there, and it was that stellar about 11-12 years ago for $400 bux. Certified too! :)...

Anyways, I remember the guy being a big VW fan, had some conversion going on, and had a VW Van if I remember correct sitting there. He was married, and had a newborn recently ( at that time ).
I don't remember his name or addy, but it was in guelph, so I took a shot.
