My daddy went to the Kentucky Derby...

...And all he brought me was the burned out shell of a 1998 Jetta TDI

I went to the Derby and stayed with a good friend who lives across the street from the Track. While I was over there, another friend, a trainer, asked if I wanted to watch the races from the backside of Churchill Downs. I've never been in the barn area for the race, so I agreed. We had to ride in his car to get into the stable.

To get his car out, I had to move my car which was parked in the alley behind his house. That done, I tucked it back into the same spot, about a foot further up.

I should point out here this was my 13th consecutive Kentucky Derby.

About 20 minutes later, I get a call just as I'm walking up to the rail on the backside. It's my buddy. My car is on fire, it's destroyed. This call came in about 45 minutes before the big race.

As you may know, there are a lot of people who tailgate before the derby while camping out in big motor coaches. Apparently one of these mental geniuses decided to dump the red hot charcoal out of their barbeque grill in a secluded spot in the alley. Half of the charcoal wasn't even fully grey ashed yet. According to my buddy, you could have still cooked a steak on it. Unfortunately, instead, I cooked my beautiful Jetta.

Thing is, the fire didn't get too bad because there were actually 2 firefighters in the front yard, and half the fire trucks in the city were within a half a block. There's no damage in the passenger compartment at all. Had she not been drinking the diesel, there's an excellent chance we would have seen a spectacular explosion Instead, there was very little damage other than what you see here.

The car was towed to the impound lot, and I was able to get my stuff out of it that evening. I hitched a ride back to Missouri with another buddy on his way back to Fayetteville.

Our insurance company doesn't write policies in Kentucky, so we have to wait for them to have an independent look at the car. Hopefully not more than a week to get to settlement. I won't be buying back the car, I don't have any way to get it home. I will make every attempt to find out where she's headed and pass it along to the club. She's got the A3 Upsolute chips inside, Old Navy CCV, 2 brand new Yoko Avid H4S 205/45/16 tires on the back (I can get you the third from here at home. The 4th is another horrible story that happened 2 weeks ago) She had an epsilonian device, but, um I don't think that's gonna work any more. The shocks, struts, front control arms, bushings, and lower ball joints are all less than one month old.

In doing research this morning on TDI prices to pass along to the insurance company, I found a remarkably underpriced 2000 Golf with 100k on the ticker. $6k for a car with a perfectly documented history, including a timing belt change at 60k, EGR and MAF replacement last week. I couldn't help myself, and made the deposit. So, I'll just be spending a bit more time in that forum.

I am very saddened at your loss. A beautiful A3 makes an untimely end. I wish you luck with your new car, may it fill the Jetta's boots.

Damn, Tim!

On behalf of all Kentuckians, you have our deepest sympathies.

Plan what you want to do with the Golf for mods. If I can make it to Walt's this fall, we'll spend all day playing with 'er.

Thanks Bruce. I kinda keep crossing my fingers that I'm not missing anything on the Golf. She won't be mine until I get an insurance settlement. (Not really looking forward to that). But the Golf's gonna need a skidplate, as the owner installed the factory Eibach Kit almost immediately. She's pretty LOW. She's got the Oettenger front end, grill, and side skirts, with Hella smoked head and taillights, and a nice set of VW 16" alloys.

Only real issue is that she seems a little slow, but then, I'm used to driving a chipped car. The owner has had almost EVERY annoying nusance problem that the A4 will throw at you. It was a surprising find, particularly since I wasn't really looking for a replacement yet.

I don't know, I'm still a little torn, there's a BUILT 1990 Jetta GLI up in Rockford, IL with a bored out 1.8 16v, P&P head, headers, chip, GTI close ratio, and a Quaife. I figure it's putting down 150hp. All for less than half of the TDI. It's a tough call, but it seems like fate meant for the TDI to fall into my lap.

Well, I don't know if fate decided I needed a break, but man, oh man did I get one.

Ladies and Gentlemen, please welcome home, Giacomo!

I'm absolutely smitten.

Also, for those of wondering the fate of my beloved A3, here's the scoop. My insurance company unloads everything through an auction company called Copart. They're online at www.copart.com Anyway, it will take about 4 weeks for my insurance company to get the title to my car in my name. At that time, copart will auction it off.

The car is not being returned to St. Louis, but instead has been shipped to the nearest copart lot, which appears to be in Lexington. Anybody who is a registered dealer can bid on the car, and I believe can even bid online.

The VIN for my burned A3 is: 3VWRF81H9WM253765

I'm sure the longblock will be fine, the turbo could be questionable as the heat could have killed the diapraghm in the wastegate. Same is possible for the plastic parts of the injection pump. The fire was hot enough to melt the fuel lines in that area, so you know there will be some issues.

Wow, what a freak thing. Sorry to hear about your Jetta's fate. Although, that is 1-sharp Golf
. Is that a 337/25th aniversary GTI front facia?
No, it's even cooler, the full Oettinger kit.
They're the german aftermarket outfit that ends up designing all those cool bits like the 337 setup for VW. I really love it, and had it not already been on the car, there's no way my wife would have ever let me shell out the 1200-1500 bucks it would have taken to buy it.

Problem is, it sits 3 inches off the damn ground and I've already popped it pretty good twice. My old Jetta gave me a good 6-8 inches of clearance up front after I put the VR6 springs on.

Kooya, thanks for the warm thoughts. Don't worry, I still know a heck of a lot more about the A3's and I'll keep an eye out around here. You guys tend to have more interesting problems anyways. Every 3rd post in the A4 forums are about failing MAFs.

I say you be wasteful and you just buy another white 98. Might as well use money you don't have so you can say you still have your jetta. I mean, how hard would it be to get one???? With only 84 k miles!! Sight unseen, just pick it up who cares if it's skanked up. My car still feels like an orphan. Wish I could find your wreckage, upsoluted ecu and that on filter yum.

Looks like green coolant in the reservoir

Nice car overall though. Interesting that mine was manufactured 07/97 and is a 1997 and this was manufactured 09/97 and is a 1998. What a difference 2 months makes.

Not trying to bring up old pain, but I looked at this car tonight. It now lives in a VW salvage yard in Lexington, KY. This is my preferred VW parts place, so it is accessible to me.
