That is GREAT news...Congratulations! What are you going to get? We need details! Get ready for what will seem to be a long few months, but I am sure that it will be worth the wait..I don't know for sure though, I am still waiting for my 2001 to trickle in.

I have given up on 2k1's and told my dealer to forget about them.

I am getting one of the first 2k2 Golf GLS TDI lux monsoon (they couldn't get the CWP, no biggie). I am totally syched I was not expecting to hear that my car was in production already. He said he'll have a VIN in two weeks and then he can give me a better time on delivery, but right now he's expecting early sept / late aug. He knows the the check has already been cut and waiting for the car, so he is doing EVERYTHING he can to get it to me ASAP. I've been waiting for a month since I've ordered my car, and several before that. I think that a VIN can hold me over for two months!!!!!!

I cann't wait for it to come!!! It should be here just in time for school!!!!!!!!!!!!

And the warranty will be longer, so i'd hold out for a 2k2!!

The stealer is lying to you. VW doesn't assign cars to dealers/prospective buyers until after they clear the port. What he probably is really saying is that 2002s in general are in production now. His projected arrival date might be fairly accurate though.

Until you have a VIN for your car, assume it doesn't exist. Even after you have a VIN, it could be weeks before it arrives (mine took over 2 weeks to ship from houston to portland, according to the dealer).

You know what, I'd love to believe both of these stories. But so far since I've flat out told the dealer don't play games with me and you'll get my sale they haven't. And you now what, in two weeks or so I bet they'll have VIN for me.

I know you cann't "order" any cars. And they HAVE told me this. But according to them there is some form of "requesting" system, where if they are producing that type of car soon they can try and get it.

Like for me they requested a Blue / Black Golf GLS TDI lux, monsoon, cwp, 5spd. And what they have showing in their system as comming is a Silver / Black Golf GLS 5spd, lux, monsoon. I told them what colors I'd accept and that was a combo I'd take, and I don't really care about the CWP. I was like it's only 100 bucks why not, but I don't need it, and I rarely use the heated seats in my mom's lexus when I drive it.

He was the one to call me and tell me that their request for a car had been processed and is into production mode. My car request had been escallated to the dealership Manager, because of their inability to find any cars that are even CLOSELY around what I want. All of the ones around here were AUTO, or didn't have lux or monsoon.

So as much as I'd love to believe you that I'm being screwed, I cann't bring myself to believe it. But you know what if I don't have a VIN in two weeks or so, I will go have a discussion with my dealer. And I will act occordingly which does include going to another dealer.

But when I did a request form with them a month ago looking for a 2k1.5 they showed me the cars that are availbe in my area that dealers have that haven't been marked as sold yet. He said we can try to get one of these but I cann't guarrante anything, but he will try. And he came back to me a couple of weeks later and said none of the other dealers are willing to trade which I can believe b/c they had 1/10 cars in the NE and they could sell it for a hell of alot more than what I'm paying. But he's called me and told me about the 2k2, how many dealers do you know will call up a person and lie to them about their car being in the system.

So far Jim has been straight with me since we've started this request formally, and I have been so with him.

And yes once you get a VIN just means the car has been totally assembled. So it will take lots of time after I get my VIN. He said that and so did I!!!

Once I get the VIN I can track it across the big pond, and then to the local port, and then to the dealer.

And I will not believe I'm being lied to yet. But you may prove me wrong, and I will be very pissed if I am, but you may be right.

Ohh ya and what would my dealer have gained by telling me a lie at this point. I wasn't expecting to hear about a 2k2 going to my dealer for a couple more weeks, and he knew that, because he said mid July before he'll hear any car information just days before we talk and says the car is in production. That leads me to believe him.

I have a VIN but for a 2001 that left the factory at the end of May. Is there really a way to track the progress of the car toward Boston with a VIN?????

I have a 2k2 Jetta TDI on order. I was told by the dealer that the car is indeed marked for them before production, and that it's a question of when it goes down the line. I presume that cars of certain colors/features/whatever go down the line in batches to keep the assemblyline workers from going crazy.

This dealer has been totally honest in the past, and has actually called me unsolicited with status (or lack thereof) reports, so I'm more likely to believe them than some others.

See I'm in the boat with you. My dealer has been on the level with me since the time that I became serious with him.

Yes you can have your dealer look up the phase of your VIN. It will be in production, shipping, port, or transportation. No exact information until it's at PORT, but once it hits port it will be about two weeks, atleast that's what I've heard from my dealer.

landrumdh, davidlp,

Your buying experience matches mine. My dealer,

Scott VWkept me informed of the same "stages" as your dealer.

The fact is dealers can "order" a car. Apparently the factory will match your specs with those of cars slated to be built. When they find a match...the car is designed as "owned" by the dealer.

Good Luck!

My dealer told me the exact same thing. While they can't "order" the exact car that you want, they can see what is going to be built and have it marked as sold and sent directly to the dealership. My car was built at the end of May is being shipped to my dealership. When it will arrive is apparently anyone’s guess....Waiting is a lot harder when you are the one doing the waiting!!

Hey, Manfred-
Sounds like our cars left the factory at about the same time. What port is closest to you? I expect you will be getting your car 2 to 3 weeks before I do. I think Boston, which is where my car will come in, is the last port of call in the tortuous journey from Brazil.

Manfred- Thanks for the news. I wouldn't be surprised if my stealership thinks the car is coming by space ship via Pluto.....landrumdh- if the stealership gives me any usable info re: the delay from port entry to onsite delivery, I will let you know.

Ok, at this point, I have to be happy about being European. We get to order the exact car with the exact equipment and the dealership guarantees that we get what we order (otherwise it's a price cut or extra goodies, I think).

I ordered my Audi A3 130PD four weeks ago. Yesterday I called the dealership and the guy said that a preliminary manufacturing schedule states that it will be assembled week 30. So, maybe I'll be getting it mid August or close to that. The wait is killing me, though
. It must be much more painful for you guys not even knowing for sure whether you'll get the exact match to your wishes.

Ya we don't get to order. As I've stated my dealer requested one car that was going into production and got a different one. But it was within the color / features that I said I'd accept. At this point I'm not to picky b/c I will mostly have to wait for even longer to get my exact car and I'd prob pay much much more for it.

I don't under VW's system it's rather stupid, hopefully they fix it soon!!

I am picking up my car tomorrow. Does anybody have any last minute advice on things I should be especially careful to examine or ask about or demand?
....Manfred- I guess my car left the factory a little earlier than yours.....Landrumdh- can't give you any help on the time between port arrival and stealership delivery. The chimps couldn't be bothered to call me when the vehicle got into port. If I hadn't called them, I still probably wouldn't know it was being prepped at the stealership.

Your lucky, my stealer (formarly called dealer) says they still don't have a VIN yet, we'll see what happens.

Ha ha, you mean those cork screw look-alikes?

I got mine in the plastic bag with the mats and it took a while to figure out where they are supposed to go
. I didn't feel like installing them, so they're probably still somewhere in my basement. Oh well, I'll be getting my new Audi A3 in about 5 weeks, maybe I'll have the dealership install them for me this time.

Manfred, who is your dealer? I just ordered thru Speedway, and I know nothing about them, other than they quoted me a good price.

Jettman- I am getting the car through Tom Wood. I can't say that I am getting a particularly good price on the car but they did work to find out when the car that I wanted was being built and "ordered" it for me. I am quite sure that if I had not been as particular about the model, color and options that I wanted that I could have done a little better on the price, but who knows...I have a couple of friends who tried to get TDI's through Speedway and the sales person was not able to find one for them. I like Speedway and love to test drive cars there as they just let you take the car, drive it, and bring it back without the sales person going along and giving you a sales pitch the entire time; but I am happy that Tom Wood was able to locate the car that I wanted....Well, I guess they have...I will let you know for sure when it shows up!!

I don't know how good my price will be...Quoted wasn't bad, but I'm waiting to see if they try to tag me with a bunch of extra charges. The best price I'd found in the area was Muncie VW, but I waited 9mos, and only two TDI's came thru the doors. I'm too long-waisted for the sunroof, so CW and NO sunroof were my only non-negotiable requests, and Muncie couldn't fill that. The sales drone at Dreyer laughed at me when I dared to suggest MSRP was too high a price...

I just read on Scott VW's Forums that 2002 VW's will have a 4yr 50,000 mi warranty (and have the powertrain warranty cut to 4 yr/ 60,000mi). I think that's outstanding, and if I were looking for a new VW right now, I'd definitely wait for a 2002 with the new warranty. My sister's 99 TDI has lost AC functioning and had a failed EGR valve since the warranty expired. My 00 has had alarm system problems and dash light problems just before the warranty expired.

I am going with the 2k2 because of the warranty, and because the stealership told me it'd be much easier to find an exact match in a 2002 than a 2001 (should've talked to these guys last September, when I originally "ordered" my car!) Now it's all waiting (again) to see if they can deliver. The salesman (this will be edited to "salesdrone" if he doesn't come across) said 6weeks max. We'll see...

Probably longer. VW is shutting down their main plan in Brazil towards the end of this month and into next month. Slow sales and Brazil's energy crisis are being blamed.

Must be the people who were involved in getting California into its energy situation took flight to South America.
