Hello all,

I just wanted to share my opinion on the changes after getting the recall work done on my car, a 2004 new beetle 5 speed. My SOTP meter is pleased with the work. With the A/C on it feels faster than it used to without the A/C on. My estimate is that it gained about whatever horsepower the A/C uses. As far as smoke goes it certainly doesnt smoke any less than it used to, maybe more but nothing to get excited about. I chopped off the muffler long ago, so that might help the reflash make more power... for the record I had it done at Bill Jacobs in Aurora, IL. Also when I originally inquired about it they said it was a recall and not just a TSB, and it does say recall on the invoice.

Peeps around here have been talking recall off and on. What recall(s) have been issued for the 2004 TDIs? Shouldn't VW send a recall notice to owners?

Could you please explain what work you had done?

Thanks

I brought mine in a month ago and the recall is associated with the ecu and a "hardstarting" something or other. they performed the additional work at no charge and when i got my car back everything seemed ok? maybe i'll notice something this winter

As one who suffered through a new ECU, many days of CEL and three days of a lame loner gasser, let me assure you that this is one recall that was worth the trip to the dealer.

Mine after having this done runs smoother and the ac seams to work better. They also add another ground wire I believe.

Hey, maybe they recharged your A/C too.
When I got my '04 back from a warranty repair last week (to replace the glow plugs) I had billed on the ticket a can of R-134a and a can of leak-check dye, along with the glow plugs. Yep, it was my VIN on the ticket too. I watched the whole glow plug replacement and NOTHING else was done. Was the dealer scaming VW? A mistake? Who knows. I did not mention the discrepancy. I just wanted to get the hell out of the dealer after a month and three trips there trying to get my glow plugs installed!

This arrived in the mail today... Thought I would pass it on...

The TSB-97-04-05 is NOT a recall... It's a technical service bulletin.

If you would like to read the whole bulletin, you could click on this link... TSB

BTW, read the last page, it's interesting that VW acknowledges "chipping" in the form...

The work I had done consisted of: "install ground wire and update ecm programming". I could scan the invoice if it is of that much interest. I originally had called the dealer to inquire about a TSB based on the info in the post mentioned above by schultzy, and because I was told to get the TSB taken care of before sending my ecu to upsolute. Upon calling the dealer, the service advisor told me it was a recall (which apparently it is not) and asked me if I had gotten something in the mail from VW. The copy of the TSB above doesnt even mention the beetles, so who knows... Also I shoul re-iterate that my perception of better performance was completely un-scientific
It may well have jsut been my imagination due to having been driving the 1.8T passat they gave me.

DE,

Oh heck, you are a Linux house aren't you... The .msg is an Outlook format.. So, if you happen to have one of those laying around, try opening it with that... (the old save as stuff)..

If not, let me know and I'll try to put it into some other format for you.

My 2 cents:

If it ain't broke don't try to fix it. Two dealers I talked to said it doesn't effect every PD, only a limited amount. They told me if you feel a loss of power or hesitation, i.e. ****ty MAF, then bring it in, otherwise leave it alone.

no, it has nothing to do with Linux- the only way i was able to open is was by using Internet Exploder and DISABLING a bunch of security settings. Not for the weak fo heart!

Using Mozzila & Firebird yeilded a bunch of gobledygook.

The good thing was it printed clean. Intersting reading! Thanks for making it avaiable.

Gary: could you save it as a PDF doc?

I have a pdf of the entire 14 page tech bulletin. Let me have your email address and I will send it to you, all 1.3M of it.

Just picked up my Jetta Wagon PD from the dealership following the recall fix. Noted right from the start-up: smoother idle, no more shuddering; smoother power delivery, engine seems to rev more freely. I would recommend getting the recall work completed. Special thank you to PAPADUZA for emailing the Tech Bulletin!

Yes, per the TB affected VINs:
Golf prior to VIN 9BWGR21JX44036323
Jetta prior to VIN 3VWSP29M84M135524
Jetta Wagon prior to VIN WVWSR21J24W182742

In checking the VIN # on my Jetta I see that mine is earlier than 135524, mine being 085133, (made in 12-03 but titled as an '04.)

What is the difference between the P as an engine type and R as an engine type? I have the R but the recall information you posted has the engine type as a P.

The restraint type and the check didgit are different also. Any idea what that maybe about?

Thanks.

Sorry I can't help out with this. There is a thread posted somewhere on the club on how to decode the VIN, but I have yet to find it with the search feature.

I'll be at the dealership at 8am tomorrow morning for my 5k oil change. When I made the appt., I referenced the TSB# and said that it may have to be done too. We'll see...

Well, it turns out my Golf is not part of the "recall." I had the service guy check it for me when I brought the car in. I was also pleasantly suprised that my first oil change was free!

I had my TSB done last week and I am waiting for it to rain to see if it makes a difference. Thanks to all in the forum, I feel like the dealer never would have figured it out on their own! (scary) tdiclub.com RULES!!! - Matt
