Multi function steering wheel retrofit

Hi everyone,
I have just bought a donor mk5 as I need the gearbox for our other mk5.
I have however also fitted the multifunction steering wheel, steering wheel control module and airbag from the donor car into my 2008 mk5.
After fitting I carried out the basic settings of the G85, g200 and g201 sensors, all that works great. The problem Is only the buttons on the right hand side of the wheel work, the radio volume and phone buttons on the left don't.
Can anyone help please? I'd really like these to work. ?

Am I correct in assuming that you have control buttons on your wiper stalk that (used to?) control the MFD display in the instrument panel? If yes, I had similar issues in the past. Been there, done that. The steering wheel controller seems to get confused when it sees two different buttons that want to do the same thing. I had to play with the control module coding. What I found is that when the control module is happy (no fault codes) one side worked and the other one didn't - like yours. However, when I changed a bit (or 2, I don't remember) in the coding all of my buttons worked but an autoscan showed a fault code that the controller was improperly coded. Almost every button worked and I just learned to ignore the error message from my steering wheel controller.


The other option you have to get all buttons working without any error codes would be to replace your wiper stalk with one without the MFD control buttons. Is there one of these in the donor car? If not, I have one I never bothered to install.

Yes in sure it's a coding issue. I've been using Odis to do the coding as I work at vw but odis isn't great at coding the older vehicle anymore as we rarely see them now.
I think I need to borrow vcds and have another go at coding through that.
I have a wiper on it but haven't used it as my car has auto wipers but the donor car doesn't, I thought that would introduce another problem?

For what it's worth, I did not have to replace my clockspring in an '09 JSW when I installed a MFSW. I did have to replace the steering wheel controller and the airbag harness. IIRC, there is a page in the Ross-Tech wiki about which clocksprings are compatible with which steering wheel controllers.

What radio do you have in the car? That will also impact if the left side buttons will work. If not a VW radio then it is most likely not going to. If it is a VW radio it could be the SWCM. What revision is that part number?

I have the rns 315 radio installed. I'm not sure what it came from. This may well be the issue.
The SWCM is from a slightly early car, 2006.
Could this be an issue.
Tbh I have a bit of a mix of things going on.
Last year my speedometer back light died so I replace the speedometer with a highline one with larger display but from a manual transmission car so my gear position no longer is displayed as I have a dsg car.
I'm using a mf steering wheel, clock spring and SWCM from a late 2006 petrol car and rns315 possibly from a touran. A mix and match haha.

Clockspring isn't the issue then, it is the SWCM. There is a difference in protocols between the older SWCM and the RNS-315. You'd need a SWCM from a newer car, maybe 2009. I found the one who's PN ended in AH was the best one, IIRC. The only problem with that was I had to solder in pins to keep my dual stage airbag.

For your instrument cluster, the coding can be changed with VCDS to show the gear selection.

I thought the gear selection was just a coding issue and have had a go at sorting it with the help of a friend with vcds who also is better at coding than me but the issue is I don't know what code I need to change?

Unfortunately I don't have the exact coding. The instrument cluster will have what I think is a 5 digit code that adds up to something depending on what options need implemented. VCDS will bring up the instructions once in there. I used the high line instrument cluster DIY guide on VWVortex when I upgraded mine and it lays it out pretty well.
