Looks like someone is asking for a pitty party!

The amount of soot that is deposited onto the back of the car depends on the placement of the tips relative to the bumper the sound volume in the car also changes. When I had my dual tips installed (one on each side... by the reverse lights) I had them installed sticking half an inch past the under side of the fender. I can post pics later if people want to see.
Sounds like the hot setup. Can you post pics?

Thanks!

girl friend has a 2000 bug
i removed the cat+muffler and put a dual exit tip on the g.fs bug about 3.5 hours after it was bought and i'm very happy with it no soot and u can only hear it in the cab at around 110km but its not obnoxious and i did notice the turbo spooled up much faster made the car much easier to drive in traffic

So most of you guys just cut the pipe before the muffler and extended the existing pipe to the bumper with 2.5" stainless steel pipe? What is the diameter of the pipe leading into the muffler?

Ok. So at this point I've gotten that I should use a 2.25" Stainless or Aluminized straight pipe, possibly weld it or clamp it in from the rear axle back, and bend the tip at a 45 degree angle towards the ground to avoid soot on the bumper.

What I didn't get is:

1. Where do you go to get the 2.25" straight pipe, Stainless Steel or
Aluminized?

2. How loud does it get over 3000 rpm inside the car? Is it
deafening? Are the vibrations like sitting on the washer during spin
cycle? :D Is it bearable? What do your girlfriends/wives say when
they are in the car and you are speeding down the highway over 3000
RPM?

3. Also, will it or will it not affect the emmision factor? I live in a state,
Delaware, that checks for emmissions. They plug a computer in my car
and do some sort of test and I think because i have a diesel I have
passed. How is getting a straight pipe and no muffler going to affect
this sort of test and the results? Any hard evidence or real life
examples out there?

4. Finally, how have you guys gone about convincing the Muffler shop
mechanics to do this for you? I can't imagine walking into a shop
holding a stainless steel pipe in one hand and trying to explain to the
mechanic what I want to do. It sounds like the guy will either give me
a blank stare or fall on the floor laughing. What's the best way to go
about doing this? Thanks in advance! :)

When I had it done I started by shopping around at different shops. I wanted a stainless steel tip on mine to make it look a bit cooler, Price aside one shop said that it was not a good idea ( i didnt go with that shop) others were more expensive, others were cheaper.

The shop that did the work is the shop that provided the aluminized pipe. I think just to cut the muffler off and weld up a straight pipe in its place with one hanger was about 30 dollars. I ended up doing quite a elaborate setup, I opted for two tips. one on each side. the total cost including two stainless steel tips at $30 each was about 150 dollars. Here is a picture:

Jetpuf: I'm also going to go the dual tip route (actually dual-twin tips) once I get my body kit painted and installed. I was wondering if you could post a pic from underneath your car. Perhaps the next time your car is on a lift. That would be much appreciated.
thanks

With the pipe sticking out like that, I have a word of warning: Just watch your legs when you walk around the back of the car. Actually, if someone who doesn't know that pipe is sticking out like that, will probably smack it with their shins. 1 customer of ours put an extension on an old 5000 diesel to "keep the soot off of the back of the car". Guess what, someone in a shopping center came around the back of the car, tripped and fell over the pipe. That person sued the owner of the Audi and won.

thats is the most stupid act of justice i have ever heard. there is noway the guy who tripped over the pipe won, because the truck was parked on public property in a shopping center, the person who tripped over the pipe should be sued for causing damage to a "PARKED" vehicle. the ONLY way the guy who tripped on it could ever sue and win if the car was parked on private property (eg. on his driveway) just like when you dont clear your driveway from snow and someone slips and hurts themselves, they could sue you for that. but because its on public property, the guys who tripped should have his eyes open and not walk so close to other cars. so there is no way that i believe this but i just had to comment on it though.:)

I would have counter-sued for sheer stupidity and mental anguish for trying to figure how someone sould be so stupid as to trip over a tail-pipe on a non-animate object!

If you want to REALLY make a nasty sound, try just a bigger downpipe (nothing going to the back)....I can tell ya it's downright scary to innocent passerby :D

oh boy!

I just had mufflerectomy done, after having RC 1+ upgrade Saturday in Fullerton. I have fallen in love all over again!!! It feels and sounds like a different car. It sounds much deeper but no louder than most other performance exhaust systems. I used a larger pipe, tucked and facing down for concealment and to keep my white Bora soot free. I cant believe the difference after Jeff set me up with 1+.

btw for everyone upsizing their turbo's... mufflerectomy with vnt-17 is loud. I just lobbed my muffler off the other day and put tips poking out the back and its way to loud. Gives this droning boomy resonating noise 2500+rpms - really annoying on the freeway because its constant. So for folks going with a bigger turbo, give some thought to adding a glasspack or high flow muffler to help mitigate noise.

Note, Muchos soot with straight pipe on white jetta. I have a 45 slash cut even with the valence and it looks like the side panel of a cummins hot shotter truck

i've heard mixed responces for my biggest question...
is it not illegal to run withput a muffler?
some people say you don't need a muffler if you have a turbo others say you don't if you run diesel. some say its always illegal

Some areas count a turbo as a muffler. The SRT-4 has no muffler stock - just a straight pipe with a cat.

In my area, a Muffler is NOT required for a vehicle to pass a safety inspection. We currently do not have an Emissions test. Best that I am aware, all that is done for a Diesel is an Opacity test. Kennedy told this about a year ago. He lived in an area that has Emissions tests.

I do not think that it is exclusive to an Upgrade. I was running a GHL 2.5" from the Turbo back with my stock VNT-15 with the same results. I installed the stock system after about six months with the GHL. Good guys, they took the system back and refunded full price.

California Emissions?

Anyone know about doing this and still passing emissions in California? I need to register my out of state car after moving here, and I'm wondering if I should wait to do this mod until after I've registered and passed emissions.

And no one has really answered the question of how loud this is. Anyone have any comments on how much louder this is than stock? I'm a big fan of having a sleeper car. The only thing better than being fast is not looking fast. :D
