MPG impressions on 2015 Golf so far

As physics would predict (resistance increasing geometrically as speed increases arithmetically...or something like that), I've found that if I do 60-65mph (~100km/h), I get really good fuel numbers - like around or even a little better than 5L/100km (47mpg); if I'm running late and pushing up to and holding at (but never above...oh - never above) the 120km/h speed limit...and there's a bit of a headwind, and the road is quiet (no traffic to pull me along), I'm using almost 50% more fuel - like 6.5-7.0L/100km (~34mpg).

Granted these things add up, but Blu hen is getting an average of 56.6! Thats a huge difference.

I don't know what you guys are putting in your tanks, but my lemon with 12,600 miles is getting an average of 34MPG and we just got back from a short road trip. I would say I wasn't driving the car any differently than I would another vehicle.
Just seems low to me.

How fast are you driving though? I get 34 in heavy stop and go traffic or if I'm driving WAY faster than I should be. Normal speed for me is between 60-65mph on my commutes.

I run BP ULSD and 2oz of Schaeffer's Summer diesel treat 2000 in every tank. (I run their winter treat in the winter)

Ha ha, just change it, then you will. 107 or 108% consumption number seems to work well for most of us correcting that lying SOB in the dash.

Some tunes adversely affect the readout beyond the point of adjustment in VCDS (+/- 15%). It can be tweaked if you speak to your tuner and it's that important. I haven't asked for mine to be tweaked, but will at some point because I'm always 5mpg less than the MFD with calculation maxed at 115%

As posted above, this is a characteristic of that tune. If you're getting 600ish per tank your actual FE is in the low to mid 40s.

When I highjacked the wifes passat my hopes with my malone were kinda crushed, after 600 miles over two days of commuting, MFD kept stating 50-53MPG, tank calc'ed to 45-46. I was moving 70-80 for 95% of it so I'm not upset just aware how bad the MFD is now once under long highway runs.

The MFD on my GSW with Rocketchip Stage 2 and the FE set to 105% reads within 1 MPG of calculated actual, so far on the low side.

Obtained a personal best of 60.8 mpgs (hand calculated) in our 2015 GSW, six speed on a trip from Milwaukee Wisconsin to Bluefield VA. Going mostly right around the speed limit. Two adults and a ton of gear for a vacation. Lots of beer and liquor--cheaper in Wisconsin. Hard to fathom that the car can go 2508 feet on an ounce of fuel.

I was told dsg firmware for stage 2 mk7s isn't necessary....but in that regardless
..what parameters are actually altered with a dsg tune?

Such difficulty getting an answer for that question.

Give Jeff at RocketChip a shout for the particulars. IIRC as he explained it to me, shift points are modified to keep the engine in its most efficient range. Also cuts down on regens.

OMG - such a 'UUUUUUGE difference / upgrade.
My biggest with this car (apart from the Nav/display, soon to be remedied), having always been a 5MT or 6MT person in my Mk4 cars, has been the DSG. Stock shift points were always too eager to get to the next highest gear in "D", while "S" tended to let it rev higher than I wanted /expected.

Got a Malone DSG tune a couple months back and it now always shifts right where I would've shifted - like it's reading my mind. I had put paddle shifters on my steering wheel thinking that would alleviate my pain, but that didn't really help.

Couldn't be happier with it.



"D" mode now is near perfect.

Wait, all of our cars DIDN'T come with paddle shifters? I'm a "S" all the time driver, its much better than the "S" in the MK5's for efficiency and keeps me about where I'd be.

I sure wish Jeff was closer to me.... Have worked with him on my last 2 TDI's.

23k on the car so far.
Just took a trip from VA to Maine and back driving 65-70 most of the trip. Three tanks with average of 54.4 mpg. Some of the best tanks so far, and this is after complete phase 2 update and two tanks with the car packed, riding quite low with the added weight.

Overall average for 23k miles is 47.5 mpg.

The wife was driving the TDI while I did services on her Audi. 38.8 mpg for the tank. My 23K miles average was 47.3 prior to this. That is what driving style does to mileage. She gets 21 mpg in her Audi which has a 2.0 turbo.

My wife is just the opposite. If I get 46 or 48 mpg, she'll unfailingly get 50-52. She loves giving me a hard time about it.

That's really good. I was getting close to that on my 2014 Sportwagen (6MT). But my replacement car (note wrecked 2014 link below) 2015 Sportwagen is DSG. I can't really get more than 45 on the highway. I drive too fast. The 6MT 2014 could probably do 50mpg if I took it easy.

I am thinking of lowering revs per mile with taller, narrower tires. Not much choices out there for these 17" wheels though. Odd that you can easily find taller narrower tires for a 16" wheel, but not a 17" wheel! I guess nobody buys narrower taller tires, so they won't make them.

Your mpg plot looks a lot like mine on my 2015 Sportwagen DSG (fuelly link below). I know it could do better if I would just let up on the throttle and slow down!

Sounds like your wife took driving lessons from my wife.

On my Mk4, I could get reliably under 4.5L/100km; my wife was typically 6.5L/100km. (52mpg vs. 36mpg).

She gets much better fuel economy in her Audi now, but that's because it's the e-tron and the first 30km of each trip is 0L/100km.

Not a huge jump. I tried 205/60 and got nothing.

Plug and play. There's something out there.


Personally I'd prefer more sidewall. I'd sacrifice a few MPG for ****ty road cushion and rim protection.

I recently found a set of 205-60-16 ContiWinterContact tires for cheap on CL - figured the extra rolling diameter will help with the increasing potholes in winter, plus help make the "reads too fast" speedometer (and possibly the optimistic fuel economy readings) be a little more accurate.

Mine reads 3-4km/h too fast; like, at an indicated 120km/h, I'm at 116km/h on a GPS.
