Volkswagen, Ford, Merecedes-Benz, and Volvo all come to mind as vehicles that had a coil spring failure pattern. The Ford Taurus was so bad, that Ford issued a recall. Not to replace the springs, no, but instead to install a metal guard so that if they did break, they would not go straight through the sidewall of the tire and blow it out. Then they just had a warranty extension on some others. The Mazda 323 derived 1991-2001 Escorts were also very notorious for breaking springs.

The Toyota Sienna also is known for breaking its rear coil springs.

FWIW, none of my own Volkswagens have ever broken a spring, but I pretty much always replace them when I replace the dampers. And I never let those get to the point they are "bad" anyway. Never had a flat tire, either. *shrug* .

My husband says that in 40 years of owning cars and he’s had some pretty old cars he has never had to replace coil Springs before ever.
I've seen lots of Jettas running around with the bottom coil missing on one or more springs and the owners are oblivious.

Probably 20 times a year here. And we're not completely deep in the salt wastes of some areas, although I do get a fair amount of Illinois rust bombs in here. Had one from Iowa earlier this week.
