Mobil 1 TDT deal at Autozone

I guess this never sold well - most Diesel truckers aren't shopping for supplies at Autozone, and it was never rated for VW Diesels.

I never used it - but, after reading from others it works well with PD (What I have), I see no good reason not to. In all likelihood, any full-synthetic 5w-40 would meet VW's specs, its just a question of whether or not the manufacturer bothered to go through the process/pay for the testing.

WOW $1 a jug, I gotta hit my locals again. I have five gallons so far but I'm kind of running low on oil money. Two oil changes though must last me a year. Now all we need are filters. Maybe a group buy?

Here is the AZ part number for the 1 qt bottles: 103171 Their site can be painful to search/find stuff on. Look for 'see stores with item link on that page'. Not sure if the $1 deal was local to this store or not, as most of the AZ's I've gone to the last couple days only have the gallon jugs. But prob a good idea to call in advance as it's normally $9 a qt.

Also to clarify - AZ employee just said they would not be carrying it anymore (lack of demand), doesn't mean Mobil 1 is discontinuing it altogether.

Load up!

Via the search, it says its normally stocked at my local store, but I can't get a rundown of inventory by store, by nearby location (gotta be a dozen Autozones within a 10 mile radius of me).

I did search the one store I went to for the 1 gallon jugs - they didn't have the single quarts.

I will probably just need to drive around. $1/quart is tough to beat!

I really don't think it goes bad. Its oil - been sitting in the ground for millions of years, what's a few more on the shelf...

What about having them order you gallons as seen in their ad at the $12.99 price?

(Personally, I've never seen gallons of that oil in AZ, but I don't spend much time there.)

well, apparently from what i've heard the sale price doesn't come up until they ring it through the register, which seems odd. but appears to be true... none of my nearby places have the 1gal jugs in stock, not sure if i'm going to bother having them order in from the warehouse. we'll see.. maybe

I was in an Autozone for another issue today - saw they had the single quarts of the TDT, but were priced around $9, no sign of a sale.

The gallons are a dime a dozen around me. I bought 3 already. That's 30k miles. At some point, as cheap as it is, the time-value of money will come into play...

I should have tried to check out with one, to see if the sale price came up or not....

TDT has been group 3 for a while [since it split from the Delvac line], so it is made of dinosaurs that are sufficiently changed from original form to be called synthetic. Group III base oils are the most common type of synthetic used now.

Bob, thanks for that link.

It would seem to me Group IV oils are better than group III. Is it possible to definitively find out what Group an oil belongs to?

TDT may ultimately be fine for a PD, but I would think Group IV oils would be better.

PAO is better in most aspects, at a much higher cost, with little benefit in most applications. It doesn't matter as the performance differences won't manifest themselves except at extremes. T6, TDT, other Group III, VI and V mixes work fine in heavily modified street setups. What specs an oil meets is more important than its base stock.

Exact base stocks used is trade secret by most companies. Very few will tell you exactly what they use. At best you can try to figure out from the MSDS or data sheet properties.

Not gonna find many PAO oils anymore. Most of your 5w40 505.01 oils, Group 3. Most any 5w40 is going to be Group 3 or mostly Group 3.

If there was some problem with Group 3 oils, we'd have seen it by now as it is very common and has been for a while.

Just bought all 8 gallons the local Autozone had, and the store manager was surprised at the price, which I showed him in his own flyer. I grabbed the 3 off the shelf and asked if they had any out back, and they had another 5, so I bought them all. Now I'm set for the next 4 months on oil changes, thanks Kingcodez.

It's help like this that makes this site great.

Excellent find! We use this in our motorcycles, dirt bikes and four wheeler as well as the tdi.

For reference! Even if the shelf shows $8.99 for a quart it should still ring up at $1.

So, would this stuff be okay for my GTS 1000?? I was gonna order some Amsoil but now maybe not. No problem with the wet clutch application?

Thanks!!

Aprilia, I am no expert on this - but, as I was reading up on this TDT oil last night, I seem to remember some quote from Mobil regarding the wet-clutch issue (and the fact that it isn't recommended for wet-clutches).

I wouldn't take my own word on that....but you may want to look into it...

I am definitely going to give this a try....the AZ's around me have shelves full of the single quarts, while they are clearing out of the gallons (there are signs for the reduced gallon pricing, but none for the quart pricing).

Thanks Bob. Glad to hear it, cuz I'm gonna be using TDT for years to come....

Just bought all of the quarts at my local store for $1/ each. There is not a sale sign that stood out, but the pricing sign was changed to say $1 on them if you looked.

I lost my mind and joined the madness - raided 2 Autozone stores and a WalMart to bring home 12 gallons of TDT :D
Looking at all this oil I am wondering what in the world I am going to do with all of it! LOL
Was only planning to use it in my ALH, but maybe I should muster the courage to try it in the BEW also - otherwise it will last me for 6 years!

Has anyone tried price matching at any other auto parts stores? There's an O'Reilly near one of my Autozoo's, and when I stopped in the TDT oil was "on sale" for $25/gal. I did not have time to ask (busy store, kid needing nap), but thought someone else might have tried. The O'Reilly policy says a local store receipt is needed for price matching.
I had just bought the last gallon from Autozoo, so I had my receipt, but it did not ring up as TDT oil, it rang up as "Mobil 1 5W-40 Diesel Engine Oil", although lower on the receipt is printed "Mobil Valvoline-Pay $12.99 for any Mobil Delvac, Mobil 1 Truck Diesel or premium Blue Gallon jug Deal 47974: Total savings 17.00"

I just went to Wal-Mart and they hesitantly matched the AZ price. I only bought 2 gallons since I still have a few gallons of T6 when Advanced Auto made an error on their price online. I think I got the T6 for around $12-13/gallon. I am good for a couple years now. I am thinking about running this oil in my 99 Ranger that has the 2.5 in it. Any reason to be concerned?

eberg, you need to drive more.
Abacus - I am working hard at it, but in the end I may just succumb to shorter oil change intervals - 7K sounds good to me right now! :D

hazetguy - WalMart price matched for me, but they did not want to do it with the receipt from the AZ store only - I went back to my vehicle and grabbed the flyer and that changed things.

Thanks eberg. I was wondering about other auto parts stores though, as wallyworld does not receive money from me.
I'll grab a flyer from Autozoo, just in case I need it. Thanks for the tip.

Okay Thanx...I'll read up on the TDT on Mobil's site myself.

So all your bikes and 4 wheelers are non wet clutches?
