I'm probably going to do the same thing with wife's Beetle early this summer. Buy new intake, install, disable EGR/CCV, then clean old intake at leisure.

Tight garage space & schedule make this my preferred plan. If I had ample, space, time, etc., I'd probably do it the other way . . .

I'm specifically not a VW/TDI guru, just a DIY kind of guy, willing to have spare parts . . .

Maybe we can get a round robin going in the TC/MN/region with a spare intake . . .

Anybody know where I can get an intake manifold? I've got an '02 Jetta. I think mine must be pretty clogged up. Do you think it would just be easier if I got another one and switched them out, then cleaned out the original one for next changing? Any comments welcome!!

VR, I'm still thinking about throwing down a mileage challange to you, when are you planning on leaving to go to Mich? I could unrace you to Madison or Chi town.

Sam

I know I'd lose, but it'd be fun.

I'm over 700 miles again with the fuel gauge at 3/16. Spamjohnson thought I couldn't repeat my number coming back - I plan to break 50 again.

I'm also giving thought to the idea of taking a lap around the 494/694 loop before I fill again.

what was your avg highway speed - this was mostly highway, right?
i'm feeling quite confident in my PD manual i can get 50mpgs around 70mph indicated, but haven't quite yet had a tank where i'm actually had all highway and kept it at or below 70. one of these days :)

Average speed was 60-62 real-life mph on the interstate (my speedometer is just about dead on). Return trip: 731.5 miles, 14.594 gallons = 50.13 mpg. Trip out was 771.6 miles, 14.625 gallons = 52.76 mpg. Total for the round trip is 1503.1 miles, 29.219 gallons = 51.44 mpg.

anyone have any suggestions for a mufflerectomy? is it illegal in MN to remove our muffler? anyone around here have a PD without a muffler? i'm 99% sure i want to get rid of mine, but a little worried about the noise increase, though i hear it's hardly noticeable, and then the legal aspect... will i fail inspection... i just bought the car year and a half ago, so mayb ei'm not due for an inspection for a while...

i'm thinking a straight pipe, down-turned at the end to keep it more oem-like and hidden.

Rob, that is impressive, for the winds you had to deal with, Maybe you should lay out a course up 94, down through ND/SD and back around 90 and up 35. Lay it out for 800 and we'll have a mileage run on a Saturday.

Burpod, I'm not aware of any inspections in MN, there used to be some in the cities, but Jesse V did away with that. You could be pulled over by a LEO and inspected at any time, but that rarely happens, just keep the old Muffler as a back up.

This is what I have on my 00'. The noise isn't to bad, but its noticeably louder in the back seat. Hopefully I'll be picking up a rear valance with exhaust cutouts and maybe put on a different tip. I'm hoping that will cut down on some of the cabin noise.

Good route VR, I'm thinking I'd like to avoid the cities, how about 94 west for 400 miles and turn around? At 60 MPH it's 13 and a 1/3 hours, 12 and a third for 65 and 11 and 3/4 for 70.

Leave at 5 AM and back in time for a late dinner.

No drafting trucks now (not that I'm running a CB and thought about it.)

Thoughts, anybody else nutso like us?

900 possible?

Is that all completely flat road too? I know 35 South of Owantanna down to Austin and 90 West out to Laverne/Souix Falls SD is about as Minnesota Prairie flat as you can get. Though there might be more crosswind/headwind too where up north you might get better tree cover breaking up the wind.

Hey, I am looking for someone that can read the service engine code in the Rochester area. Couldn't find anyone closer than the cities in the list. Does anyone know anyone around Roch? I might just go buy whatever I need if there isn't anyone near here, the dealer wants $130 just to read the code and diagnose it.

The Holiday Station at Hamilne and Marshall in St Paul. Has a pump that says it's ULSD when I was there Sunday Night.

I ran into an old time TDI owner today. At the gas station, but he wasn't getting fuel for the TDI (just coffee) of course. Driving a 97(?) TDI with 130,000 or so, his last TDI went over 300,000 miles. Said he had the old Jetta diesel from the 80s before that too. Asked if he had a decent mechanic for working on them or did he do it himself, wasn't surprized when he said he did his own work.
The silent majority it seems.

Well I feel dumb. Went by station again and I did read the pump wrong. Sorry for the mis-information.

Blue Graphite 2006 Jetta 5sp, 0 pkg
Just wanted to introduce myself as the wife & I purchased a new Jetta TDI last week - manual, 0 pkg, blue graphite & gray interior. I'd been wanting one for quite a while and finally decided to get the new sedan as opposed to trying to find a reasonable deal on a wagon.
