Yes, pd smart actuators are replaceable. Finicky to get exactly right. You can also program them out and just replace with a dumb actuator. By the time these actuators need to be replaced, the control ring inside the turbo is so worn out, it will still over/under boost with the new actuator.

Yes, silver beetle Khristian.

Ok, thats good to know. I'll let my guy know he should just get a new or low mileage turbo.

Glad he was able to get it to the right person😉. Looked like a clean lil bugger. Maybe if I'm lucky in 5yrs or so when my bugs body is fully roached that one will be ready for a new driveline. Not that I wish that fate upon the guy.

sounds like my favorite solution to ALH turbo issues applies to PD motors too
Set the boost request map to all 950 or thereabouts, let the MAP sensor dangle from its wires so itn just read atmospheric pressure all the time and slap a wastegated turbo of reasonable size on there instead of the woefully undersized bolt-on options

Hey 486, How do you get all the links to go under your posts?

These ones: compounds manual glow plugs egr shenanigans twin disc clutch 0A6 insight swap $12 immo delete
I've seen where some people add quotes or things like that, but I can't figure out how to do it.

Upper right corner of the page, click your username, the dropdown appears, click on 'signature' then add whatever you want in there
keep it small and unobtrusive, as it causes extra scrolling
all of mine is inside 'font size=1' tags to keep it little

IKR! I would own this car with pride if it were a manual. The poor beast needs a proper swap.
Yes it does but youd be pretty hard pressed to find another one that color and in that shape. 5g is a pretty fair price too in my opinion.
Very tempting…..

Donor/swap car. 2001 Jetta sedan 5 speed with 284k runs\drives great, very nice interior, body rusted. $1500. Convert that wagon to 5 speed and loads of spare parts.
You've put on quite a few miles since I last talked with you😄. I wouldn't mind buying that Jetta of yours, but the wife thinks it's a lil rusty. I think it would make a great madmax looking car:cool:.

Whoops, typo error!! To verify it's 184k miles 😒😒. I haven't driven it except the occasional lap around the neighborhood. No current license or insurance on it as I have the 2003 Jetta TDI conversion that I did and 2 other vehicles (and that's enough to keep up with) since I "downsized" a bit!!
It is rusty. The sheet metal is rusty and corroded from the aftermarket fenders and DIY bodywork from 2004\2005. The underside and interior is quite decent and solid.
I really should actively try to sell it, just been busy trying to be retired. My Dad (almost 92) has been in Hospice care for over a year now and passed away last Thursday so it's not been a priority by any means. Starting next month things should settle down, I hope....

The rust doesn't bother me. Like you said just body rust. I like the car. I'm waiting for someone to wreck my bug then I'll come knocking lol.

And now the price is down to 3 grand?
A few folks must have gotten ahold of him and mentioned the automatic's reputation.
Getting hard to resist at that price and being so purdy.

Dropped so much its almost odd. I may have to go for a test drive...
Its like they are trying to offload it. Maybe they'll take 2500$

Edit: Going for a test drive. I can't resist. I may have to bring this car home

Here she is in all her beauty. Ms. Lagoon in all her wagon glory. Needed a TB yesterday so thats the first on the list.
Naw, I still need it😄.
Need?

Got an ex-cabbie friend in his 70s whose trying to survive on just Social Security. Got a decent apartment in small town public housing but needs a car for shopping, medical appointments, etc.. He's a car guy and a good driver, but cuts corners on maintenance and ran his last two 200K mile used cars into the ground- Last one was a gas hog Isuzu 4x4 and he changed the oil maybe 3 times and the filter once in 60K miles, before that a Mopar Minivan that he had only one "smart" key for and he lost it. His current ride was free, another barely running Mopar Minivan with strut towers so rusted that only the cowl is keeping the front struts in the car! Should have driven it straight to the scrapyard but now he's sunk a couple hundred $$$ into it.

I'm tempted to sell him the Golf4 TDI, but I didn't take care of it for 21 years to have him kill it in 2. Trying to figure out a way to sell him the car so he's legally responsible for it but structure the deal like a full maintenance lease so he doesn't get it until the maintenance is caught up and is motivated to bring it back for service. Tryin' to give the guy a hand, without lettin' one of my favorite cars die of neglect...

Makes sense. I'm the same way about my cars. My mistake, it sounded different in my head than on the thread I often use need and want as synonyms lol. It was more of a jokingly "I have to have it!" Than anything. I currently have 5 cars and may be buying another shortly so I should probably be good for now. Tho one is getting scrapped.
I have an 08 dodge avenger I'll likely be selling in the next few months. Probably a further drive then he'd prefer. Not perfect cosmetically by any means but a good runner. Regularly drive it on 2hr trips.

Now you "need" a 5 speed donor car....
I am currently looking at getting a beetle. the timing is off so it only idles, but it's nicer than my car (far as I can tell from pictures) so I'd hate to kill it. I also don't know that my wife would let me spend that much on a donor car.

Ok, here is my list of obscure '02 TDI GLS Wagon Facts.

Rear Bumper is shorter than the '03 and later.

Move right wiper control to the rear (towards the front of the car) one click for intermittent rear wiper, push even more for rear washer.

On the GLS you can turn off the lighted steering wheel controls by feeling around the back of the controls for a little nub, click on that the lights go out. (I've done this twice in 22 years of ownership) I think it's on the left side.

If the car has the Monsoon and is an early build, The front left speaker is out of phase with the others.

You can check the rear hatch area driver's side cubby to see if you have a 6 disc, or Music Keg removable media player. They activate on a second CD button push.

My car was weird, there was a strike at the plant when being built, my heated leather seats didn't seem to heat on 1, boiled me out at 2. I replaced the switches and all was good.

The hatch buttons only unlock the hatch for a few seconds, you have to go and physically push the hatch microswitch for it to open.

Don't forget to make sure the mirror heat is off.

Enjoy!

I have monsoon and 6 disk. These are all great things to know. Thanks!! Not sure when it was built I'll have to look on the car or in my papers for it. It came with a 1" thick stack of documents. Lots of work done to it in the last 6yrs.

Build Date is on the Silver sticker on the Driver's door frame, mine in January of '02. I didn't get it at the dealer until April 15th.
