Most likely, because it's very common, would be a glow-plug related fault. Maybe one of the plugs, maybe the harness.

My recommendation for anyone in St Paul is always Eric Merker at Hudson Auto Center (formerly Midwest Motorworks). He kept my '03 Golf TDI running for over one million miles.
"Over a million miles" is incredible, especially if it existed in MN much with the salt corrosion.
Very impressive!

Eleven out of 20 years in Minnesota. Rocker panels mostly non-existent by the end.

My 2001Jetta 5spd has extreme body corrosion because most of the panels were damaged and replaced (cheap aftermarket) or repaired (by me) after original owner rolled it at 33k miles.
Only 280(ish)k miles on the chassis which is in good shape, interior very nice.
It would make a nice donor engine and transmission\parts for a project car. $1500
My 2003 Jetta TDI that I converted from a gas 1.8T chassis I don't use in the winter (trying to spare it from the salt\chemical corrosion) to attempt to extend it's life another decade.

To clarify: newer "enthusiast" VCDS cables do have a 3 or 10 VIN limit (depending how much you want to pay), BUT you can read/scan an unlimited number of cars.
The VIN limit is only if you're changing certain stuff in the computer, then you would have to save the VIN to the cable.

Any basic reader should give you an MIL code #. As in $20 bucks from Amazon.

Walmart or any car parts outlet should have them too.

Fred's (TDI Club) will give you a good troubleshooting path if it's not evident what the problem is.

In other news, drove my wagon to Cali, 4400 miles of TDI goodness. Gotta love the torque in the mountains. $6 fuel? Eh.

Now 466426 Miles.

I have a vcds dongle that will read codes, and clear them, but its a "lite" version so I can't change anything. I can read the code and figure out why the car is illuminating it with you though. I'm often in the area, PM me if your interested.
Thanks. ..that would be great ..if you're in/near StPaul-UMn someday (above freezing!) [will try PM]

I have the older version of the cable without the restrictions. I'm near flying cloud Airport in eden prairie. If you ever get over this side of town I'd be happy to scan it. I don't get to st paul often but can certainly let you know the next time I'll be over that way and see if it works to get it scanned.

Thanks! for the offer; I'll keep that in mind. For now, I may be someday meeting GlowBugTDI for a scan

If you have a real VCDS dongle, why are you using VCDS lite for software?

It's just the vcds lite dongle. I'm to "broke" to justify buying a real one currently. Someday, just haven't needed the actual one yet. I only bought this one for tuning. Ive gone 6 years without so figured why buy one now. Would be very nice when I eventually do my first timing belt, but till now whenever it was due I've been to busy so I have someone else do it.

Oh, so it's just not ross tech right?
I guess I use VCDS, vagcom and ross tech kind of interchangably.
I feel like I got lucky finding a KII on here for $100. That's about the lowest I see them for.

Yes. Very nice! I was offered one for a good deal, but not that good and after thinking about it i decided to just wait and use the cheap cable (non ross tech).

I recently sent a deer on a free flight and am in the process of locating most of the front clip for a silver 2003. The junk yards look pretty bare from what I can see so if anyone has anything laying around they are looking to unload or sell please send me a DM. I plan on putting a more extensive list together in the buy/sell thread but if anyone has stuff locally that would be preferred.

When I wanted an indigo blue hood for the '03 Golf I sold to my nephew (deer collision), I checked both U Pull R Parts locations every day for at least three weeks before they had the one I wanted. Black tends to be the most frequently available color.

Anyone have an ALH cam laying around? May or may not need one coming up here eventually as somehow the vacuum pump/timing slot cracked off in the casting.

Try this website too, it will list parts at yards across the country, and you can sort by distance. Most of them will ship parts too:

ok, no rush. For now it's fine. Just something I'm keeping an eye out for. So far the junk yards have nothing, but usually if there is a good head there I buy the whole thing. So now I'm also keeping an eye out for a trashed head too lol.

3 weeks ago, thanks to GlowBugTDI, VCDS read my '02 TDI 'MIL' fault codes as:
17055 / P0671 (Cylinder 1 Glow plug circuit (Q10))
17058 / P0674 (Cylinder 4? Glow plug circuit)
17978 / P1570 =?

Now that I've used my cheapo Radio Shack multimeter on glow plug tips:
(coolant side) #1 =3.42 ohms, #2=0.6, #3 =0.5, #4 =1.02 ohms (battery side)

~> so do I at least replace glow plugs #1 and? #4 or all 4? ..or? (before simply buying parts) it seems there's more to check: spray/clean the GP wiring harness caps oxidation? (I have DeoxIT D5, but wasn't yet comfortable severely twisting the harness to enable spraying into caps) ..also test a GP? relay? ..test 'GP' fuses oxidation under battery cover? etc etc.

(for my reference: 2004 TDIclub advice from 'Wingnut/MoGolf') "Take note of the resistance value of each plug. Resistance must be below 1.5 ohms. They should all be between 0.5 and 1.5 ohms. It doesn't matter what the readings are, as long as they are close to each other (within 0.2 - 0.3 ohms). If you have a plug that reads high or infinite, then you have found the bad plug and it needs to be replaced."

Perhaps I should post in main forum, but I'm posting in MN group in case there are local sources for parts: Napa? (save shipping) vs www.idparts.com/glow-plug-system-c-123_94.html) ..which brand? of glow plug ..OK to mix? ..or first try 'good-enough' used plugs (if I had any)?

Ok to mix glow plugs, but only get name brand ones.

DO NOT use autolite glowplugs. They melt/flake inside the head and fall apart in the combustion chamber.

I've found glow plugs at NAPA, but it's easier to build up the order with stuff your going to need anyways like filters to qualify for free shipping from ID parts. BTW, the glow plug wiring harness on these cars fails often and may be the problem.

I dont think they do free shipping any longer. I had a near 600$ order and while ago and another 120$ not long ago and didn’t get any free shipping just a” discount” for being a “preferred” customer

I haven't bought any parts for quite a while but I usually got better pricing and free shipping from Dennis at metalman parts. Bought several TB kits, GPs, MAF sensors and misc stuff thru the years especially when I was doing the 1.8T to TDI swap. Great service.

I'd come see it, but I won't be driving my TDI for another month or so. If your still figuring things out then I can definitely swing by. I do have an ALH in my trunk currently, but I don't think that would do you much good...

Agree, i bought these other idparts “on sale” but with shipping cost it’s probably brake even

My engine is BRM, and being swapped into a wrangler at the moment.

Are you documenting your swap for your youtube?
