not a bad deal. That window being down means bad things for the interior I'm sure.
And now it is sold and on its way to its new home.Well, my Jetta Wagon is for sale.

I kinda dread the idea of removing the intake, etc. and was hoping I could get some recommendations as to where to take it around here to have that done. Thanks for any insight.
Thank you very much @TornadoRed!Hudson Auto Center, formerly Midwest Motorworks. Exit 4 in Hudson. Eric Merker is a bonafide TDI guru.
It used to be sporadic, and it would also go into limp mode sometimes. Now it's constant. Thanks to the awesome info on this forum I knew either the intake or MAF were probable culprits. The MAF could be on the fritz too for all I know, but since posting my original question I took off the anti-shudder valve to take a peek, and this removed all doubt as to my next steps....Is it always gutless, or just sometimes? (Could be limp mode).
The check engine light is on, and has been for as long as I can remember. After cleaning the intake, I'll perform this test and let you know the results, and whether the CEL goes away.Unplug the MAF take it for a spin and post the results. Any CEL ?
WOW! That may be the worse I have ever seen lol (intake diameter looks to be a bit bigger then a penny in the pic). What kind of mpg have you been getting??It used to be sporadic, and it would also go into limp mode sometimes. Now it's constant. Thanks to you both for your responses. I'll be trying to take off the intake and clean it myself, since I'm in in this far anyway, and I think I've dislodged some chunks, which I would like to keep out of the cylinders if possible. Will order the "intake cleaning kit" from IDparts, and I'm crossing my fingers and toes that the intake bolts don't give me too much trouble.
The diameter is actually about a half inch. Can barely stick the tip of my pinky in there. My MPG has been very poor, low 30s at best. It's embarrassing how far I let it go.WOW! I would clean your intake runners very carefully and make sure the valves are closed on that cyl when you do it (valve lobes facing up on that cyl). I would also vacuum the runners after each one to be sure there is no crud in there. Maybe even turn the engine over at the crank afterwards to be sure there is nothing keeping a valve stuck open.
I would also drain out the intercooler as there is a good chance you have a fair amount of oil in there. I would hate for that to get sucked into the intake after you clean it all out and improve air flow.
Ya, it'll feel like a totally different car! Keep us updated, and feel free to reach out and post here for any questions!!The diameter is actually about a half inch. Can barely stick the tip of my pinky in there. My MPG has been very poor, low 30s at best. It's embarrassing how far I let it go.
Thanks for the tips - I plan to do as you say. This car will feel amazing once it's no longer breathing through a straw.
That is sweet, 1000$ aint too bad either for a clean rust belt roller
Seen this 91 passat posted looks very clean for the year. Would make for a good AHU swap possibly if your into that model passat. Kind of neat as you don't see hardly any of them anymore.
$650 would be better. I just picked up a 97 buick park ave ultra (supercharged) with 94k miles for under $1k. Came from Florida so it is almost rust free. It has one 1" spot of surface rust in the trunk otherwise it's minty lol. It's been sitting since 2019 so it needs all new fluids and such, but otherwise is a very clean car. That is sweet, 1000$ aint too bad either for a clean rust belt roller
"20-teens vintage"? That's like a brand new car to me. I saw my very first regal wagon earlier this summer. I liked it at least from an exterior point of view; it was a nice red color. I really wish they made a wagon in the 97-05 years with the series 2 3800. Those would have been the golden girls of the 3800 series.GB, your mention of the Buick reminds me I see Regal Wagons around here every now and then...quite a nice looking beast( late 20-teens vintage ).

Most likely, because it's very common, would be a glow-plug related fault. Maybe one of the plugs, maybe the harness. For the first time in 122K, the MIL light ('engine' icon) is On in my '02GolfTDI. Is there anyone with VCDS expertise near me (MSP~state fairgrounds) who would be willing to read the fault codes? [someday during warmer weather]
Just FYI, the VCDS software isn't registered to any specific VINs and the owner of the cable can use it on an unlimited number of vehicles. A person buys the dedicated cable and the software is downloaded free. For the first time in 122K, the MIL light ('engine' icon) is On in my '02GolfTDI. Why I ask: If I had a clue what the fault may be, then I'd be better informed if a local independent shop/tech claimed otherwise 'whatever' (to install $$$ parts etc).
Perhaps I'm mistaken, but I'm thinking that although VCDS hardware/software is registered to 3? VINs ..it could also Read codes in other vehicles (but not make changes)?
My small unheated garage is Freezing (until March_?), so I can't wrench on motos etc. My TDI gets used for local 45mph errands, so I ignore the MIL light until_? The TDI has only 122k cuz I do most errands on motos, weather permitting. TDI sits ready? for cross-country trips.
My TDI's only upgrade: back in Jan2002 I drove my 1-month old TDI to observe a local 'chipping party' featuring a guest tech ('Uwe'? from WI?) installing Upsolute chips. Enthusiastic 'social encouragement' prompted me to just-do-it.
[Over the many years since, I've not regularly browsed TDIClub forums ..so I likely don't know what I should know ..such as Who are the TDI techs near me etc]
Thanks. I was aware the software is free, and it's the $200? cable/dongle that's dedicated? to limited VINs ..so I was wondering if that means someone with both (aside from a shop) couldn't actually volunteer to 'read' my TDI etc. Way back in 2002 at the 'chipping GTG' I noticed several owners had their laptop+cable ready to tinker with whatever performance parameters etc ..but I didn't ask about registrations restrictionsJust FYI, the VCDS software isn't registered to any specific VINs and the owner of the cable can use it on an unlimited number of vehicles. I wasn't aware of the number restrictions on the newer type cables. I have an outdated laptop(s) and have had to update my cable once from a serial port to USB type but my old system has no VIN number restrictions. I've used it on a lot of various VW vehicles.IIRC the new cables restrict you to something like 3 VINs, but you can pay extra for more. Or, a 2002 doesn't require the newest cable so a used older cable that doesn't have the VIN limit might be a good investment.
Thanks for the Hudson recommendation. My logistical 'solo' constraint is that unless I could wait while TDI is being checked/fixed, I could only leave it where I could get to/from home by metro public transit. I've yet to learn if Good Karma (Mpls~Lowry) has reputable TDI skills. Most likely, because it's very common, would be a glow-plug related fault. Maybe one of the plugs, maybe the harness.
My recommendation for anyone in St Paul is always Eric Merker at Hudson Auto Center (formerly Midwest Motorworks). He kept my '03 Golf TDI running for over one million miles.
I have a vcds dongle that will read codes, and clear them, but its a "lite" version so I can't change anything. I can read the code and figure out why the car is illuminating it with you though. I'm often in the area, PM me if your interested. Thanks for the Hudson recommendation. My MIL fault light is Off on when starting/idling the car ..comes On only when put in gear and moving away (stays On). On my next errand (when it's not below zero) I'll check if that's also true during each stop/restart. When I recently browsed TDI forums about this, someone had helpfully posted: "When troubleshooting, VCDS doesn't tell you what the problem is, it tells you what the ECU sees. When a DTC (code) is set, you Do Not just change the part described in the text of the DTC, your next step is to figure out why the ECU set the code" ..someone else noted: his glowplugs were ok, fault was poor wire contact; cleaned connections, fault code gone. [Which is why I asked about 'reading' my TDI to have a clue about the fault ..such as if it might be a tarnished wire connection, I could tinker in my 1-car garage ..some non-freezing! day/week/month].
