My brother who drives' semi within the 5 state area told me that he tries to avoid Holiday diesel fuel because he notices a decrease in performance and MPGs. He'd rather fill up at SA, KwikTrip, or Casey's if he can't find a truck stop.

Very interesting. When I first moved here, I was using SA mostly. I was not impressed. Also, I did not realize that different Holidays were owned/managed by different groups. I thought they were all the same which I found out today to not be true. I do know KwikTrip has been a good choice for me in the past. All I was saying is the person from Yocum Oil impressed me. I will give them a shot. As you can see by the link, they only have 9 Holiday's. The two closest to me are not theirs.

I have always avoided SA because the gas is high alcohol. .. Never even gave them a chance with diesel

I emailed Holiday about how they treat their diesel in the winter. He said additives are added manually when the tankers dump their fuel at the station.

He sent me how they determine their blending as well in a Word document:

Needless to say, both Kwik Trip and SA, perform computer controlled blending of additives/bio at the terminals.

My wife used to work for Ziegler Cat in their power systems division, and was involved with ordering diesel for their generators that they helped to service. Yocum is who they used exclusively for fuel distribution, and she mentioned they were very pleasant to deal with and never had fuel issues. I might have to take a look at the Eagan station.

Here is their answer on the blending of diesel:
"the majority of the diesel in our retail stores are blended at our own proprietary terminal in Rosemount, where we can monitor quality of biodiesel and diesel blends, as well as inject additive with our in-line digital blending."
It looks like all Holiday's are not created equal.

I like that answer. I wonder if we have any actual information on Kwik Trip and SA diesel blending procedure.

Yes, blending for Kwik Trip is done at the Flint Hills refinery in Rosemount, and it is done electronically, at least for the winter fuel. Their fuel supply department provided that info.

I spoke with the chemist who helps formulate the additives for the diesel at SA's refinery in St. Paul Park, and he said they do electronic blending as well.

Their CSO (Chief Strategy Officer) from Yocum replied to me directly, which I was not expecting at all.

However I'm waiting for the answer on if this is only in their B20 product, or if they sell it in B5? The PDF they pointed me to with all of the bullet points above were for the B20 premium blend. I can't put B20 in either of my cars because of it voiding the warranty with VWoA.

Already received my answer from Yocum:
During the winter, through to usually mid-May, the diesel at our Eagan Holiday store will be B5. We have not decided what our spring/summer offering will be, but my guess is that it will be B5 until end of June. However, Minnesota currently has legislation mandating a B10 beginning July 1, 2014. This will present a serious issue for those vehicle owners with warranties covering fuel only up to B5. I am not sure yet what this solution will be. We are part of several associations that are fighting to repeal this legislation on behalf of you as owners among other users. Consumers and businesses really should have their choice.

Please watch closely for legislative action on this. If we can see a loophole for vehicle and truck owners with warranty issues, we’ll explore it.
Interesting response about the mandate of going to B10. I think I will give their diesel a shot. The cleaning additives alone make it lucrative.

So went there today to fuel up for the first time. The pump has a sticker on it that said the fuel will contain from B5 to B20. Pump price was $3.99/gal. To early to come to any conclusion based on the short jaunt home. Since this is pretty close to home for me, I will give it a try for awhile.

Looking forward to meeting the folks at Midwest Motorworks Saturday when I bring in the car for the 40k maintenance.
Is that the nearest TDI guru shop to the Twin Cities? Other than the indiviual guru members? Once my warranty is up, I don't want to mess with the dealers anymore.

I understand that you all have no problem spending 300 dollars on a sheet of aluminum for under your car, and I understand the value in a skid plate, however my money is currently devoted to something else. I respect that you find value in paying for other people to repair your vehicles and value your time more than the cost for someone else to do it, and I don't have a problem paying when I can't do it myself. However, currently every "disposable" dollar I have right now is dedicated to a very expensive international adoption. 300 dollars is about 3 weeks savings, it's about 3 weeks longer before I bring my children home. Anyone who is a parent should be able to understand that delaying the ability to hold your children is something that no one wants to do. I cannot currently justify leaving my children in an orphanage for three extra weeks so I can put a skidplate on my car. I'm a former ASE Master Tech, I can do the work, and my disposable time is currently free as far as actual dollars and time before finishing this adoption is concerned. We're nearly there to bringing my children home, but soon I will have to go from 100 dollars a week to nearly 800 dollars a week savings/extra earnings to be able to pay for the travel and living expenses. 80 dollars for a hybrid pan I may be able to swallow instead of 30 dollars for a China-pan, but 80 dollars plus 300 dollars, I won't delay that long. Time is money, but in my case, money is time.

From one adoptive parent to another, all the best to your family. Hope you can bring your children home soon.
