I was at the Rosemount U-Pull-R today and they have a 2001 manual 2.0 Gasser Jetta there. It's not on their website yet, so it still has lots of interior and body parts if anyone is looking for stuff. It has all four calipers and rotors that looked to be in pretty good shape.
Blue with tan interior.

Enlighten me... What's the 01M swap??
The tranny was still in it. No shift tower, shift cables or interior shifter. Those are all in my 98 now!:D The 02J shifter is a lot better setup than the 020 mechanism.

Ahhh I see. I thought the gear ratio's were different for the gassers.
I still have the 020 shift setup if anyone want's it. It would do until you find another 02J setup...
Trash goes out on Wednesday so let me know!

Yes, big difference in the crisp-ness of the shifting. It is the same swap that redlabel just did which means you'll need to swap out the shifter towner on the top of the trans as well as the shifter box.

Looks like I will add shifter swap to the things to do list.
What are the best mods to start with for improving millage? I'm thinking about making my own down pipe and running a 2.5 straight exhaust. Any cons to this?

Here I am giving Green Geeker grief, and I had to re aim my Headlights (new front suspension is a little higher than the one with 160K miles.)

Did you do them in your driveway or is your shop deep enough to back up that far? My headlights are REALLY low. Hope you're liking the new suspension.

It's pretty nice, but the roads up here still suck, I just dropped them down a bit, I'll go drive late at night and aim them a little better. 44 on the last tank, what are you getting with your upgrades?

I have a question for the guru's. The day I bought my car and drove it home it seemed like it was a bit of a slug. I noticed that it seemed to pull better at very light throttle. A few days later I brought it to the shop I work at and had it on a lift I was looking at the vaccum line at the turbo actuator seemed like it was maybe a little soft. I never did anything with it other than just twist it between my fingers, I also put my fingers on the actuator rod and moved that back and forth. Afterwards I took it out and drove it and was very shocked when it had a lot more power. I haven't been driving it until yesterday and it was the same seemed to have good power. Today, not so much! First thing I noticed today was hard brakes, second was lack of power. So I looked at vaccum lines and found the large line to the brake booster was cracked and leaking. Easy fix robbed the parts car of i'd line cut it to fit and thought I was good to go. Now I have brakes but it still seems like it's not building any boost. Anybody got any thoughts? I did hook up a vaccum pump to the actuator and it moves back and forth freely. Do I dare tie it open and take it for a drive and see if it's something with that?

EDIT it's a 98 Beetle with 63,000 miles

First thing I would do is replaced all vacuum hoses, you can get 5meter roll 3mm dia of factory hose from dealer for about $32 or find alternative source like from online vendors. After you replace all vacuum lines get a MAF cleaner spray (make sure it is MAF cleaner) from local parts store and take old MAF sensor out and clean it good, replace airfilter if its bad then go for drive and see if power is back. If its still sluggish then would suggest find someone with VCDS or if you have one and scan for codes then check MAF readings and Boost specified vs actual. The first try cheap easy solution by what I mentioned above, if doesn't work then have Nick or someone that knows TDI take look at your TDI. Good luck!

My closest dealer is 75 miles away, I'll have to make due with what I can to figure thie out and go from there

I checked the vaccum line from the solenoid to the actuator, it starts moving at 3" full travel at 15", I swaped the mass air meter with a known good one. I checked the vaccum pump 26". tomorrow I will swap the egr solenoid with the actuator solenoid and try that. I'm going to call ross tech tomorrow for a cable, This laptop I bought from a member here has the licensed and activated VCDS 10.6. I hope I only have to buy a cable?

car has new filters, no change.

Sounds like you need to gets some logs to see if you're building boost or not. The cable has the license dongle built in - that's why it is so expensive.

No, but seems like that would be a constant power loss. I'll pull the shudder valve later today and post back.

Has anyone here ever done a Timming belt on a Liberty CRD?
I ask because I'm shopping around for one, and a lot are at 100K and need it done.

Don't worry the Jetta isn't going anywhere, planning on selling my wife's Prius.
BTW it looks like the wife will be driving the TDI (during the week at least)
Any feedback?

I work at a Jeep dealership, I could pull a procedure for it. My dad also has a Jeep CRD and I have been meaning to get that service done soon.

I meant warranty on the supplied engine componets. IE. belt, water pump, tensioner, rollers. -
Depends. Two vendors I know, Dieselgeek.com and metalmanparts.com have 6 month warranty on the parts. They will honor it if it was installed properly, generally by one of the recommended mechanics on this forum. Several times, a part goes bad, a few waterpumps and one tensioner, I would inform the vendor (of whom you ordered from) that the part is defective. They will ship you a replacement and then you have to ship the defective back.

So for me, if the vendor honors it, then I will honor the labor. I don't make a person pay twice. (Even if it hurts my back. :) ) There was one time an annoying 2 year old kept bothering me at the owner's house and I forgot to remove the pump pin. Started the car, I had to install a used pump at my dime. CuriousChris was great help to source that pump for me.

Parts and labor in the TDIClub forum have their ways and we generally do better than the business that are clueless. Everyone's mileage varies on this forum. As people are shade-tree mechanics to their own business. That's all I can say. We help to our best as minimal cost but when things go south, then that is where you see one's true colors. In the past, we did have few greedy "not my fault" members. I hate it when it happens.

I am sorry to say this. How was the car stored in the past? Is there any rust, mainly around the exhaust and turbo areas. It seems awfully low mileage for an old car.

If the belt appears to be dried up (brittle) or worn looking, then I wouldn't drive it. If it looks good, then I would check the tensioner to see if it is still set right. If those two look good, then starting it up shouldn't be a problem. Check the belt and tensioner while the car is running. You can put your finger on the belt of the camshaft pulley to get a good feel of the belt. Inspect it too.

You can go to Adaption on Channel 11 of the Vag-Com and watch the VNT. (of course, I know you don't have the cable.) When you get it, that is something you can do. The VNT shifts like every 10 seconds.

I went ahead and ordered the stuff from metalman, I figure I'm not getting warranty anywhere. So I'll just roll with it.
The belt that's on there now was replaced by the dealer before it was parked and does look very good. I have just been taking small drives with it, well other than driving it home after buying it. I put about 100 miles on it driving it home and taking it to the shop that I work at. Before reading about the horror stories!
I swapped out the gray cloth for heated black leather and black carpet and diffrent style console from an '03. I am taking it to get detailed tomorrow morning then I am going to do the belt next week.
I dont know when I will be getting a cable, I kind of blew my wad this morning when I took my oldest to the orthodontist bye bye 3k:(.

I gotta ask where/how you found heated seats for your Beetle with matching interior, I've been looking for awhile, and every time I check there's nothing closer than several hundred miles, they aren't cheap to buy and/or ship, and it's hard to get a real good sense of their condition . . . ?

I would LOVE to find a gray (or black) leather heated seat interior to put in my wife's beetle . . .
