The Jetta's lift pump burped its last yesterday (at 88k). The fuel filter was/is gross, so I made this an opportunity to order the nicktane filter setup as well.

I will put money on the cause of death being the 300+ extra duty cycles that pump did this winter in <0 temps (failed start attempts) before I got the glow plugs replaced and the ECU flashed.

Leppy I think it is stunning how you go through transmissions. I beat my car pretty hard and the tranny is holding up well. Of course my differential showed signs of being a little po'd when Matt put in the Wavetrac LSD.

Well It isn't like I just beat the hell out of them and that is why they break. Well one of them was at the track, but they are all mechanically explainable.

First one - Roll pin that hold the diff pin in slid out (trans never been touched) to no fault of my own

Second one - Broke 5 teeth off of my spider gears due to half of the sheathing (buffer in between the spider gears and cage) being gone and a hard launch.

Third one - The spider gears and the diff pin had pitting which caused the spider gears to seize to the diff pin and break the roll pin. Then it cooled and broke loose and the diff pin slid out and wreaked havoc.

Fourth one - A spring clip on the top gear (not fifth) snapped in half from having 280,000 miles on it and being used spiritedly and it ran through the ring gear and pinion gear.

So I don't really "go through" transmissions. Some of the parts in my ONE transmission have some age and wear to them. Note that I have only ever rebuilt them and not bought new ones. It is not like I buy new ones and they are busted in several months.

Nevertheless . . . stunning is a good word for this.

You're getting a lot of transmission experience fast, that's for sure.

Have you rebuilt one yet blindfolded?

I think dealer is going to be your best friend, thought any one would want to invest money into laser key cutter to cut keys and not be able to program them.

BTW. I do remember seen several times somekind truck at VW/Audi dealer in Luther VW dealer and couple other places in Minneapolis area. Don't remember the name on truck but do remember key fobs and everything that keys related were imprinted all over the truck. From what I saw I figured it must be some sort of locksmith guy that cuts keys for dealers. Also I might have seen same truck at BWM, Mercedes dealers also, its been like a year since I saw it so cant remember much.

Thanks guys. :)

TDICADDGUY would be proud of my work on the Jetta tonight - my driver's side rear spring broke off maybe the last 1" and was sitting a little low. I had some wagon rear springs sitting on the shelf so I said what the hey. I suppose I should now carry a shortblock in my trunk all the time now so I sit level. That or I put a little lift in the front.

If you decide you ever want to replace your springs I still have the stock springs that I took out of my car.

Will be installing my new lift pump and Nicktane fuel filter setup tonight... in the parking lot at work lol. Thankfully I didn't have to pay for a tow and Aaron at Boraparts got my order out the same day I ordered (though I did order before 10am PDT and said I'd be grateful if he could get it out the same day!). Actually the filter setup came from Nicktane in CA, so big props to him for getting that out ASAP too!

LOL...how jacked up is it?

The rear springs that I did have on my car came off a VR6 Jetta, can't remember the color code off the top of my head but I can check tonight. After I did the lift the rear end was always a little too high for my liking. I think NB's are lighter in back than Jettas. Then factor in some sag in the front springs but none in the back...I ended up swapping out the rear springs for my old ones about 2 months ago. So I have the VR6 Jetta springs sitting in my shop. You can have them for free, I'll be in Cambridge this weekend so I can drop them off at your place if you want them.

I'll get back to you on the color code tonight. But they should be better than the wagon springs.

Stupid question, Don't know your family situation, but would a dorm room work for you?

$2000/mo? Must be hosting doctors in town for Mayo research and wealthy families hanging out with loved ones in the hospital. That's something near extortion for most folks... I have a friend in "the roch". I'll see if he can dig anything up.

Thanks to Jfettig for being my chauffeur for all the "miscellaneous crap I forgot about or left at home" and for having the special McMasterCarr account that gets overnight deliveries. Also, we got the lift pump swapped out with the LCR mod installed on the new one, and got the Nicktane 1um Fuel Filter setup installed...all at the special parking lot my company shares with the MN school of bartending and some somali hang out (as well as Hilti and Wellstone action and others).

I need some advice.

You guys do this all the time, I'm sick of reading FAQ help me out please.

I need a timing belt kit, whos got the best one? Whats the warranty if it snaps a belt or siezes a roller and takes the engine out?

Who's got the better timing belt tool kit, metalnerd or Assenmacher?

The car is a 98 Beetle it's got 63,000 on it, bought it a couple weeks ago. It has been sitting since 06, anything engine wise besides the belt kit that I should be doing before driving it?
