Show a picture of your engine... most TDIs will have the engine code on a tag on the timing belt cover. It will also be on the build tag in the trunk.

The 'RAU' you are seeing sounds more like a casting identifier, not an engine code.

Your local dealer can also tell you which engine by your VIN.

We didn't get those here (all our 5th gen Golfs were called Rabbits here, and we only got a 2.5L gas inline 5 cylinder, no diesels at all).

Yeh check in the boot under the carpet, usually a sticker in there with engine code, colour code etc. I haven't seen a single tdi over here yet with the timing belt sticker still legible, not sure if brits like polishing them or something lol

Don't they have an emissions tag under the hood on cars sold there? They do here, and that tells you what all it is equipped with. You could also open the hood and look, but it sounds like you may not even know what you are looking at.

A quick google search of "BXE TDI" shows an 8v PD engine that looks similar to the BEW sold here, but using a vacuum-operated EGR instead of an electric one.

Seatman could probably tell you more. I have no idea what '58 plate' means.

58 plate is basicly late 2008 model and shows up as a 2009

Well all our cars have a sticker under the hood that tells you all that information. I can't imagine the UK doesn't have something similar.

Here's one from a 2006 Jetta TDI with the BRM (PD100) engine:

See where it has "DFI/TC/CAC, etc."? That is all the emissions equipment the car has. DFI is Diesel Fuel Injection, I know OC is Oxidation Catalyst, EGR is Exhaust Gas Recirculation, and if it had a Diesel Particle Filter it would have 'DPF' in there, too.

We didn't get any DPF-equipped TDIs until the CR engines came along in 2009. We had NO VAG diesels here in 2008 or 2007, and this 2006 was still a PD like yours, and we had no PDs with DPFs (we only had PDs for 2004, 2005, and 2006).

I know Volkswagen did make some PDs with DPFs, though, for certain European markets.

Some late 2009 1.9 tdi had a dpf but it was very rare, I doubt you'll have one but why do you want to delete the egr? I disconnected one on one of my old Mk4's but only because it was playing silly buggers lol. Does seem to help warm the car up in winter.

Even my 2014 cr tdi doesn't have that, might be a USA market thing. Maybe because of the different laws in different states?

Like in the UK it's the same law for the whole tiny country

Our stickers are generally the same for all the states, even though we technically have two versions... as California is its own sort of special, and some states elected to follow their standards instead of the rest of us. So we have "Federal EPA" and "CARB", EPA is Environmental Protection Agency and CARB is California Air Resources Board.

2006 diesel Jettas were not allowed to be sold new in California, and any states at the time that followed CARB rules. That's why that sticker I showed says it conforms to US EPA regulations, but this 2014 I have right next to it says that AND for California, as they were allowed to be sold everywhere here.

Certainly you guys have some governing body for vehicle emissions, they perhaps don't put that compliance info on each specific car, which seems odd, but I guess that's why someone is here trying to figure it out on the internet.

I'm not sure maybe ..I deleted egr because it was playing up but iv done it properly and deleted the cooler aswell and was cheaper to that than to buy new egr plus all they do is clog up the engine I much prefer the older cars never had any these issues

Just pull the vac pipe and plug it, might get a light on the dash though about emissions or that. I've not really had an issue with the egr clogging anything other than itself but I do use the revs rather than baby it. Only issue I had was the egr itself got clogged, 10 minutes effort and it was clean.
Newer ones are more of an issue because the egr and cooler are all one piece, seems the 1.6 cr tdi has the most problems with it.
I got mine turned down when getting mapping done.
But mines all electronic with a dpf etc etc
Newest tdi I've had so far.

Your car isn't a lot different than the mk4 with the pd lump, do feel a lot different to drive though.

Iv never had issues with egr before like your self I always high in the revs I bought it with clogged egr I cleaned it out but then it got worse was running really rough that's the only reason I got rid of it but I was told if it has a dpf on I shouldn't delete it as it will clog the dpf but not sure if mine has dpf read loads about the 1.9s not having dpf so I'm not really sure but it seems when the ligjt comes on dash about emissions it runs rough and when I clear code it runs fine not sure what all that is about can also hear a slight squeal now and then on low revs not sure if that's a boost leak or turbo seal on its way out it's only on 97k miles so would like to get it running nice it's the 105 bh so not very powerful anyway
